Message from the Artistic Directors

Dear Friends, What an incredible season this has been! Carinne and I want to thank you for the spontaneous standing ovations you gave to last month’s The Great Gatsby and Who Cares? The celebration of my 25th anniversary season continues with tonight’s performance of Western Symphony, George Balanchine’s tongue-in-cheek salute to the American West, and the hilarious mismatched lovers, ardent donkeys, and mischievous sprites in my version of William Shakespeare’s delightful A Midsummer Night’s Dream. These are among my favorite ballets and our dancers are primed and ready to deliver the outstanding artistry you have come to expect from the Sacramento Ballet.

Parallel to the demanding rehearsals leading up to this weekend of performances, our artists have also been busy serving the community by visiting children’s hospitals, elementary schools, presenting educational and entertaining Inside the Directors’ Studio programs and more. For the balance of the season, we turn our attention to Modern Masters/Protégés, Beer & Ballet, our Solos, Duets, and Trios program at the Mondavi Vanderhoef Studio Theatre, and our wonderful children’s program of Discover Dance at Three Stages at Folsom Lake College. Please visit our website at www.sacballet.org to learn more about these diverse and entertaining programs.

Speaking of websites, Carinne and I are working on our vision for the 2013-2014 season. In the coming months we will announce the season along with launching our brand new state-of-the-art website. With the bells and whistles of our new website, you will want to visit often to learn more about the company, buy tickets, be entertained, and be inspired.

As always, thank you for your wonderful support.

George Balanchine: Born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1904, Balanchine was a product of the Imperial Russian Ballet and the founder of the New York City Ballet. His early ballets presaged a revolution in choreography and he went on to become the last brilliant choreographer of the legendary Ballet Russes. Widely considered the greatest choreographer of the 20th Century, his genius and influence is often compared to that of Picasso and Stravinsky. He changed forever how we look at dance and created a prolific pantheon of masterpieces that defined the “American Style.” His Serenade, created to the music of Tchaikovsky in 1934, was the first dance masterpiece created on American soil and continues to hold a place of honor in repertories of companies all over the world. Mr. Balanchine passed away on April 30, 1983 leaving a legacy of over 400 ballets created during his life-time.

The Story

The story begins in a forest on the day before the wedding of Theseus, Duke of Athens, and Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. As night falls, the King and Queen of Fairies, Oberon and Titania, quarrel over a "Changeling" child. Titania departs indignantly, taking the child as part of her entourage. Oberon plots revenge and orders the sprite Puck to seach for a magic flower which causes one to fall in love with the first person they see.

On the same night, mortals also roam the forest. Helena has followed Demetrius, whom she adores and beseeches to return her love. Spying Demetrius scorn Helena, Oberon instructs Puck to use the enchantment of the magic flower on Demetrius. Nearby, Helena's friend Hermia, strolls with her lover, Lysander; soon in the darkening woods they sleep, waiting for morning. Puck spots the sleeping Lysander and, mistaking him for Demetrius, anoints him with the magic flower. In pursuit of Demetrius, Helena stumbles upon Lysander and wakes him. Under the spell, Lysander immediately falls in love with Helena. Puck realizes his mistake and uses the magic flower on Demetrius. To Helena's surprise, both men are now in love with her.

In another part of the forest, a group of amateur actors are rehearsing a performance in honor of the Duke's wedding. The mischievous Puck lures a weaver named Bottom from the group and transforms his head into that of an ass. Oberon orders Puck to place Bottom near the sleeping Titania and anoint her with the flower. Titania awakens and is overcome with love for Bottom. She and her retinue of fairies adorn the ungainly lover with wreaths, and soon Titania and Bottom retire to her fairy bower.

His revenge exacted, Oberon frees Titania from the enchantment and orders Puck to aid the unlucky mortals. Puck removes the spell from Lysander and causes the young lovers, now correctly paired, to fall asleep. The Duke and his betrothed discover the couples in repose; upon learning of the joyful outcome they announce a triple wedding. Puck proclaims a merry ending to the magic and mischief of the midsummer night.

Artistic DirectorsRon Cunningham & Carinne Binda

Under the artistic vision and creative leadership of husband and wife team, Ron Cunningham and Carinne Binda, the Sacramento Ballet has risen to national prominence for its artistic excellence and outstanding work in the community. Serving with distinction for 25 years, they have transitioned the company from a small regional ballet to an integral centerpiece in the rich cultural tapestry of Northern California.

Having enjoyed extensive international careers as performing artists, Ron and Carinne have brought a wealth of experience, knowledge, and creativity to the Sacramento Ballet. They have added over 50 world premieres and 50 Sacramento premieres to the repertory, including 18 masterpieces by the great George Balanchine. Ron Cunningham has created or staged over 75 of his original ballets to define the company’s aesthetic with signature works such as: Romeo & Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Alice in Wonderland, Hamlet, Carmina Burana, Dracula, A Streetcar Named Desire, Etosha, and many others. Ron Cunningham’s The Nutcracker incorporates almost 500 children each year, making it the largest cast of children in a professional production anywhere in the world. Together, they have invented dozens of initiatives designed to deepen, broaden, and diversify audiences with innovative programs such as Modern Masters, Beer & Ballet, Inside The Director’s Studio, Living Sculptures, Red Hot Valentine Nights, and the Capital Choreography Competition. In 2007, the company made its first international tour to the People’s Republic of China receiving accolades and praise in both Shanghai and Beijing.

Ron and Carinne have been in the vanguard of forging creative partnerships with their fellow arts organizations for many years. They have fostered outreach programs to over 40 different social service agencies, and full immersion education programs for children at risk in elementary, middle, and high schools. Together as a team, Ron Cunningham and Carinne Binda embody the Sacramento Ballet’s mission statement to engage, inspire, and educate through the powerful vehicle of dance.

In recognition of their 25 years of service to the community, Ron & Carinneare the recipients of the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sacramento Arts & Business Council. They are the first Artists to be recognized in this category.

Barbara Jackson •Artistic Directors’ UnderwriterBarbara first became involved with The Sacramento Ballet as an audience member over 17 years ago, attending not only performances at The Community Center Theater, but also regularly attending in-studio previews, brown bag lunches and Beer & Ballet performances at the Ballet’s Studio location.
