President’s Message: Looking at 2014…

I know, I know. It seems like 2013 just got started. From

the Chapter’s perspective, however, we are already looking

ahead to next year. Our membership roster was turned in on

July 31st, and that roster determines the number of Directors

the Chapter will send to the CLSA Board of Directors Meetings

each quarter next year. Actually, it is the number of PLS

Chapter Members listed on our roster who are also Members in

good standing of the state CLSA organization that determines

our number of Directors. It looks like we are on track for 4 Directors again this year.

Thanks to all our members for their support of the Sacramento Chapter.

While I’m on the subject of the CLSA Board of Directors, congratulations to

Sacramento Director Ian Wilson. In 2013, he served as one of two Members at Large

on the CLSA Executive Committee. Last weekend he was elected to become the

state CLSA Treasurer for 2014.

We are also looking ahead to election of our 2014 Chapter Officers, which must

happen at the September meeting to make the September 30th deadline. Ideally,

there is an orderly progression through the Officer Chairs from Treasurer to

Secretary to Vice President to President, and finally Immediate Past President. It

hasn’t worked quite that way for us in the last several years, but all in all the Chapter

has run along fairly well.

The following members are nominated for election at the September Chapter

meeting: Rob McMillan, President; Jerry Jones, Vice President; Matt Stringer,

Secretary. The nomination for the Treasurer office is open, and with Ian’s election,

that also opens up one of our Director positions.

If you are interested in becoming a Chapter Officer, you are welcome to throw

your name in the hat for any one of the positions and see how the votes come out.

You may also nominate someone else, (with their concurrence, of course). There are

also a number of volunteer assignments and committee chair positions that help the

Chapter succeed. If you are willing to help in any manner, please e -mail Chapter

Secretary Jerry Jones at: [email protected]

I hope to see many of the Focal Point readers at the next Chapter meeting on

August 10th.

attendance and company. Please send a copy of the attached announcement to

your members and if you have any questions please let me know.

Thank you and I hope to see you there.

Are you looking for a particular land surveying book? A reference? An exam prep?

Would you like to search through the shelves and find a hidden treasure?

I thought I had a lot of reference materials, but my couple hundred titles look like

only a weekend of reading compared to the shelves at Hein and Company Used

Books (and other collectibles). This family owned and operated store located on

Main Street in Jackson, CA, is one of the largest used bookstores in California.

They have acquired a MAJOR collection of new and near new Land Surveying text

books, as well as what I would guess is the largest collection of land surveying

reference books in California, if not the entire US. I didn’t count them, but I’m

guessing there are nearly 3,000 land surveying books. Although some of the books

are “collectibles” (First edition, signed by the author, etc.) the prices are reasonable.

Look for an in-depth article by Ric Moore in an upcoming Cal Surveyor magazine.
