Smudging is an ancient Native

American ceremony that is done to

cleanse a person, place or item of

negative energies. The ceremony uses

the burning of specific herbs and using

the smoke to both take your prayers to

Spirit and remove unwanted energies

from your sacred space. This is a great

tool to have in your journey through

holistic healing.

Smudging of objects before bringing

them into your home allows the positive

energy of it to come into your home but

removes anything negative that may be

attached. The negative energies are

carried away with the smoke to Creator

to be transform for another purpose.

The tools for a smudging ceremony are all ones

that represent the four directions and the elements.

Native tradition believes in the Keepers of the

Four Directions. These are the great brothers who

help to facilitate balance and healing in the

Universe.

Earth-Brother North-Green/White- Wisdom. North

is the time of Winter He reminds us to stop, listen

and to contemplate.

Air-Brother East-Yellow-Flight/Change. The

brother of Spring, East teaches us that new

beginnings are always possible.

Fire-Brother South-Red-Passion/Transformation.

The brother of Summer, teaching us how to rise

from the ashes and to accept our passions

Water-Brother West-Black/Blue- Emotions. The

brother of Fall, teaches us responsibility, the

lessons of family and of introspection.

Earth- The sacred herbs for cleansing that

come from Mother Earth.

Air- Feather, a sacred gift given by the

great animal spirits to facilitate the

movement of the smoke from the herbs.

Always use the feather in its natural in

flight motion.

Fire- matches are best but a lighter can be

used, facilitates the energy to convert the

herbs to smoke for cleansing

Water-Abalone Shell, used as the smudge

pot which holds your medicine

Spirit-Smoke created by the burning of

the herbs which carries your

Some things to remember:

-sacred tobacco may be hard to find, you can use loose

rolling tobacco from a native reservation to ensure its

clean of chemical additives, if you cannot find any to

use you can call upon the spirit of the plant and give

blessings of intention and ask the smoke/other medicines

to carry your prayers.

-always have a clear intention for your smudge pot,

whether it is cleansing for yourself, a place or an object

-after each use you can throw the ashes outside your

front or back doors to add protection to your home and

gift it back to the Earth.

-always start a fresh pot with each specific cleansing

Medicines in your smudge pot should be added

in this order:

Sacred Tobacco: This is used to carry your

prayers to Creator and to also honor Mother

Earth for gifting you with the medicines to

cleanse.

Sweetgrass: invites in spirits, guides and

energy into the space you are cleansing.

Remember to always burn sweetgrass with

sage because it can also invite energies you

may not want.

Lavendar: Restores balance, promotes loving

gentle energy flow and creates a peaceful

atmosphere

Sage: Banishes negative energies and provides

a protective barrier in the space you are in.

Always set your intention clearly, state it in your mind your heart and if possible out loud!
