September Birthdays

Please lift-up the following in your prayer time during the month of September. • Labor Day is September 2

nd. Labor Day celebrates Ameri-

can workers and how hard work has helped this country to do well and prosper. Pray for someone who works hard at their job and makes your life a little better.

• Grandparent’s Day is also held in September. Take time

this month to pray for grandparents and the importance that older people have on the lives of the young.

Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and un-searchable things you do not know.

Pick One Thing

It can be hard to stay informed of all the great stuff happening at Salem! Here’s a piece of advice—Pick one thing. Dedicate yourself to regularly reading one thing to see what’s going on at Salem. You can chose: The weekly email blast, monthly newsletter, the Sunday announcements or slides.

Discipleship Training at Salem

Let’s end the woulda, coulda, shoulda when it comes to making followers of Jesus. And say “Yes we did!” Join us for a two-session discipleship series called Discipleship Begins with Relationship. You are not alone if you have trouble talk-ing with others about your faith. This train-ing will empower us to share our faith. Topics will include “Whose Job is it to Make Disciples, Stop Fixing Your church, and Discipleship Begins with Relationship.” You’ll connect with your “Why,” begin “seeing people,” and learn the “how to” of making disciples. Everyone is welcome to attend these sessions. We will hold this two-session video series, led by Susan Ryder ([email protected]), Wednesday, Sept. 4 & 11 from 6:30 – 8 p.m. Childcare is provided. Sign up on the Con-nection Card or with Susan.

Women of Light Global Dining Adventure Join the Women of Light as we continue to experience cuisine

from around the world. On Saturday, September 7 at 12:00 PM,

we will experience Korean cuisine as we dine at Korealicious (829

State St, Lemoyne). We plan on meeting there but if

you need a ride, give Ginger (649-6419), Jeannie

(579-5164) or Linda (774-0901) a call to make

arrangements. Women of Light is open

to women who are single, divorced or widowed.

Signup on the sheet in the hallway outside of Fel-

lowship Hall on our bulletin board. Join us for fun, fellowship and

Library News By Kathy Alford

Many thanks to those who have volunteered to help me in the library during the week. Cindy Vanic and Cheryl Cohick are doing a great job on Thursday mornings. Charlotte Brame, Ginger Haines, and Kristy Martin are going to give it a try mid-August. I still can use more help though. No library de-grees are needed! Just let me know if you would like to give it a try, and we can schedule a time together.

Our friends at Baughman United Methodist Church have selected a book of the summer to read—Happy Church by Tim McConnell. In this book, McConnell offers a radical call for Christians to proclaim happiness. Happiness flows from the joy of the Lord and being glad in Christ When the church expresses happiness, we are making a counter-cultural choice that the world can-not help but notice.

Library Details! • The library is upstairs—Room 213 • It is self-serve and always open

when the church is open. • Items can be signed out for 2

weeks and can be renewed. • Items available for all ages: CDs,

DVDs, games, puzzles, books • There are toys available for chil-

dren to play with while parents browse.

• Any questions, see Kathy Alford (717-774-0541 or 717-798-0971 or [email protected]

• Kathy is in the library every Sun-day from 10:35-11:15.

WOMEN’S BOOK DISCUSSION

Thursday of every month at 7pm . It is open to any woman who

likes to read— Come and discuss your ideas!

The Alice Network by Kate Quinn. In

an enthralling historical novel, two

women—a female spy recruited to

the real-life Alice Network in France

during World War I and an unconven-

tional American socialite

searching for her cousin

in 1947—are brought

together in a mesmeriz-

ing story of courage and

redemption.

The United Methodist Women will have their Annual Secret

Auction on Thursday, September 12th at 6:30pm in Room 115. Please bring a

wrapped item with the approximate value written on the outside. Come and join in the fun of this evening as the bidding goes on and see the unu-sual items that have been auctioned

off. The proceeds go towards our Mis-sion Projects. All ladies of the Church

and Community are welcome.

Item of the Month: Thank you so much

for your generous donations we have

received the last couple of months for

school kits. We will continue to fill these

kits that Mission Central sends to children unable to get

their own supplies. Needed for the kits are unsharpened

pencils and hand held pencil sharpeners. Please put the

pencils and sharpeners in the bucket marked Mission Cen-

tral in Mission Corner.

BACK TO THE BIBLE SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS NEWS By Kathy Alford

Continuing through October, we will be studying Journey

Through the Bible: Matthew. We have studied several books from the Bible from this series before, and we have enjoyed this series very much.

Journey Through the Bible uses the NRSV to study the Bible book by book. Each volume Contains 13 sessions. It highlights pivotal points in the Scripture; lifts up the Bible's most significant stories, themes, events and people; and features questions. It describes the historical and cultural setting; it includes the original language and what the passage meant for its first readers; and gives insight into possible life applications for individuals, con-gregations and communities. The series maps out a daily personal Journey Plan for those interested in reading the whole Bible, verse by verse.

Join us anytime. We always welcome visitors. Materials are provided. We meet Sunday mornings in room 210 from 9:30-10:30.

Here is our schedule for September:

September 1 “The Ministry of Jesus the Messiah Accepted: Authority To Preach and Heal” September 8 Matthew 10 September 15 Matthew 11 September 22 “The Ministry of Jesus the Messiah Rejected: Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit” September 29 Matthew 13

Rich & Louise Nash thank our church family

for your prayers, hugs, cards and delicious

meals prepared by Kathy Aymin and her

Amazing team of cooking disciples who nour-

ish our bodies and souls during their visits.

One Out of Six Did you know that one out of every six people in our world lives on

less than a dollar a day? Consider what your life would be like if you were one of those suffering from extreme poverty. First, turn off your lights and your television. You won't have electricity. Even if you could have access to it, you couldn't afford it. Get rid of your cell phone, too. Clean out your closet. You can keep only one set of clothes—but no shoes. Now, you have to move out of your house. It's way too grand. You can live in the shed in the backyard, if you have one. Next, get rid of your car. Wherever you travel now, you walk. Speaking of walking, you will need to leave soon to go get water. You don't have plumbing or tap water. All the water you use will need to be carried. Sometimes, for miles. And of course, you'll need to boil it before you use it. After you get back from getting water, you'll need to walk to find firewood. This is how you'll cook your food. If you have food. You'll go hungry many days; and with both food and water being so uncertain, you'll be sick a lot. But healthcare is hard to come by so your life will be short.

About now, you are probably ready to count your blessings. But how can you make a difference for the lives of the people struggling with poverty? You can collect donations and walk in the Red Land Area CROP Hunger Walk on October 13th at 1 pm here at Fishing Creek Salem UMC.

Salem is a host church for Family Promise, and we take turns providing

lodging, meals and hospitality for three to four displaced families four

times a year for one week at a time. Thank you to the 25 volunteers

that were able to fill 46 of the volunteer positions while we hosted

Family Promise last month. SAVE THE DATE! Our next week to host is

November 3-10. Contact Stacey at [email protected]
