The Salvation Army
May 19 at 9:36 AM Baxter Springs, Kansas
Thanks for the opportunity to tell the Baxter Springs, KS story. I arrived one day following the
tornado along with two canteens, one from the Pittsburgh, KS Corps and one from the Joplin,
MO Corps. This was a combined response due to the Joplin Canteen being part of the Midland
Division. When I arrived, they were just finishing the disaster assessment and found that
eighty houses had Major/Destroyed damage and another 150 were damaged. Luckily no one
was killed in the tornado. I was on the scene for about three days just working alongside our
great volunteers. The people of Baxter Springs were steadfast during their time of disaster and
really took the lead towards their own recovery. The Salvation Army Social Services initially
set up at a church and eventually moved with other agencies to the Multi-Agency Resource
Center (MARC) to the High School. So, with the help of numerous agencies and The
Salvation Army the people of Baxter Springs, KS are well on their way to recovery. Just a few
numbers from the Operation:
- Meals Served: 1223
- Drinks Served: 2603
- Snacks: 2230
Emergency Financial Aid (Social Services):
- 309 individuals assisted
- 537 gift cards distributed
- 128 Spiritual Care Provided
- $21,550 total in financial assistance.

More than 90 homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed in Sunday's tornado in
Baxter Springs and at least 25 people were injured.
Antenna Party at Harbor Light Village:
On Friday, May 2, 2014, Joe Krout (WØPWJ), Rich Britain
(NØENO) and Herb Fiddick (NZØF) conducted a site survey
at The Salvation Army Harbor Light Village in Kansas City,
KS. The purpose of the survey was to determine the proposed
location for the placement of antennas and equipment due to
a move of the radio room from the treatment facility to the
corps community center. The three SATERN members also removed equipment from the radio
room located in the treatment facility and moved it to the new radio room at the corps
community center.
In the near future, SATERN members will be asked to assist in removing antennas currently
located above the treatment facility and installing antennas above the corps community center.
Further, help will be required to set up the equipment removed from the treatment center in its
new home.
The pictures on the roof are above the community center. The picture inside is from the old
radio room at the treatment facility.
