Committee Anouncement : The Newsletter Committee has openings for

members to prepare newsletter pages, to write articles, write poems, and to fold and collate the newsletter once a month. We also need submissions from the AA population at large! Ask for participation in your meetings so everyone has a chance to carry the message. If you have something to say, write it down and email it to: [email protected]

Following Coordinating Council Standing Committees need members.

Are you available to serve Alcoholics Anonymous? Availability is about; do I have the suggested sobriety? If there are other suggested qualifications, do I have those qualifications and to the best of my knowledge, do I have no scheduling conflicts to serve in the commitment? If my answers to all of those questions are yes, I should make myself available and let my Higher Power decide if that is the position I should be in.” Also, please talk to the members in your group about serving on the Council. Members at large may be elected to positions. It is not required that you are a Coordinator to serve on a committee.

20-20 Vision and Walking Around Blind,

Thinking of everything I’ve loved, lost and left behind, span over the years, tears and fears,

thinking I had 20/20 vision when really, I was blind.

The dark cold day would finally come through a gift of

desperation I would begin to see, there was always something

watching over me, and if I had a willingness to just start, there’s a

book to help me see my part, and if I read, it plant a seed, that

if I continue it will lead, to a new way of life, so I can see

with this new 20/20 vision ahead of me, how thing should be, so I

can leave that old life behind, and no longer have to stumble

around blind.

Our Great Responsibility; "The Group Conscience and The Trusted Servant" page 65"Now when we think of Tradition Two, I venture that we all think of the group conscience venture, and there is a little

addendum there that gets overlooked: that's called the trusted servant. Now we're getting into the area in these years - and this has been slowly going along all these years - of defining what should be the trusted servant's relation to the group conscience. This is not so easy a definition, for this is a

definition of leadership under God, under the ultimate authority of the group conscience, which can be wrong sometimes. And it has to take into consideration the extreme fallibility of the so-

called trusted servants, of which my own is well known. The big hassles have come where the so-called trusted servant, strictly in his own interest, has taken off cross-lots to make a pile, to be distinguished, to get himself secure - in other words, when he is possessed by fear. How are you going to trust people like

this? And when someone is in a spot like this - someone like me, like

all of you here as delegates, like all of you people in service, indeed like everybody who makes a Twelfth Step call - he is our great leader and trusted servant for that minute. He represents

the group conscience. He makes the difference between life and death. We people here are only making his work possible,

but that's a matter of enormous importance."

Big Book; Chapter 2 "There Is A Solution" page 25"There is a solution. Almost none of us liked the self-searching, the leveling of our pride, the confession of

shortcomings which the process requires for its successful consummation. But we saw that it really worked in others, and we had come to believe in the hopelessness and futility of life as we had been living it. When, therefore, we were approached

by those in whom the problem had been solved, there was nothing left for us but to pick up the simple kit of spiritual

tools laid at our feet. We have found much of heaven and we have been rocketed into a fourth dimension of existence of

which we had not even dreamed."Reprinted with permission from A.A.W.S.

Big Book; "Fear of Fear" page 293 "We have only been in A.A. a few years, but now we're trying to make up for lost time. Twenty-seven years of confusion is what my early married life was. Now the

picture has changed completely. We have faith in each other, and understanding. A.A. has given us that. It has taught me so many things. It has changed my thinking

entirely, about everything I do. I can't afford resentments against anyone, because they are the build-up of another

drunk. I must live and let live. And 'think' - that one important word means so much to me. My life was always act and react. I never stopped to think. I just didn't give a

whoop about myself or anyone else.I try to live our program as it has been outlined to me, one day at a time. I try to live today so that tomorrow I won't be ashamed when I wake up in the morning. In the old

days I hated to wake up and look back at what last night had been like. I never could face it the next morning. And

unless I had some rosy picture of what was going to happen that day, I wouldn't even feel like getting up in the

morning at all. It really wasn't living. Now I feel so very grateful not only for my sobriety, which I try to maintain day by day, but I'm grateful also for the ability to help

other people. I never thought I could be useful to anyone except my husband and my children and perhaps a few friends. But A.A. has shown me that I can help other

alcoholics."Reprinted with permission from A.A.W.S.

Our Great Responsibility; "The Group Conscience and The Trusted

Servant" pages 63 -64"Now we are living in a time of change, so as to almost have discredited the old French maxim

that the more things change, the more they remain the same. Yet in a sense that maxim is true with us so far as our basic principles are concerned.

Although A.A. has passed from infancy to adolescence and now stands on the threshold of full responsibility, the more A.A. has changed,

the more in the sense of its principles it is just the same.

Now when you look back upon these changes in A.A., the most difficult have been the changes in function or the means of functioning. I remember a first, very critical change in A.A., though still

an infant relative to the new people coming in the door in the first couple of years, Dr. Bob and I were parents in which literally "father knows best," for the good reason that the newly born

kids didn't yet know anything. That was our claim to parenthood, and this was a natural and proper

state of affairs. And my first notice that times were changing was that day when in our living

room the group - even before it had a name - said to me, 'You can't take that job up at Charlie

Towns as a professional therapist! That would kill the chances of everyone to come. You might do a certain amount of good, but in this case the good

is the enemy of the best.'"Reprinted with permission from A.A.W.S.

Big Book page 30"The idea that somehow, someday he will control and enjoy his drinking is the great obsession of every abnormal drinker. The persistence of this illusion is astonishing. Many pursue it into

Big Book; Chapter 9 "The Family Afterwards"page 130

"Those of us who have spent much time in the world of spiritual make-believe have eventually seen the childishness of it. This dream world has

been replaced by a great sense of purpose, accompanied by a growing consciousness of the

power of God in our lives. We have come to believe He would like us to keep our heads in the

clouds with Him, but that our feet ought to be firmly planted on earth. That is where our fellow travelers are, and that is where our work must be

done. These are the realities for us. We have found nothing incompatible between a powerful spiritual

experience and a life of sane and happy usefulness."

14 my side. The chemo had him down. Even though I rode down with friends and had friends there. It was difficult and different but I did it once so I knew I could do it again. My car had recently been acting up, so I asked for a ride. Thank goodness I’d learned how to pick up that 500-pound phone early on and it weighs almost nothing these days. I was not going to add the stress of wondering if I’d have a mechanical issue trying to get there. A ride, in fact two, was generously offered. Initially I was a little reluctant, not really interested in going and a bit sad because of why I was the one speaking and “alone” – my husband’s health. But once again, suit up and show up, give and you will get. What a fabulous morning it turned out to be. I got to see a lot of friends I hadn’t seen for some time, because of our traveling and the usual changes in meetings attended. That brought great joy to reconnect. And a great reminder of how many people I do know and can call on if needed. I got a lot of compliments and who doesn’t enjoy receiving those. And I was told my talk was a success; which may only mean that I started and stopped on time! I did hear the occasional laughter and it was at the right spots. Really though, I did get some personal comments so I know I was able to share experience that could be related to. What really topped the breakfast off was someone came up to me and asked if I recognized him, I didn’t, but as soon as he said his name, joy and

happiness filled me. It was someone that was in our drinking group that came into the program a few years after my husband and I. He had taken the 12 steps with my husband. Life moved on and we lost track. What a joy, he has maintained long term sobriety. If I hadn’t been speaking, we would have been in the same room but missed connecting. The ride home with another friend was appreciated and I enjoyed our one on one time. Those special talks to and from meetings. I was happy joyous and free and that does not begin to describe how filled I was. No room for any fear of the future, no room for any worry of my current situation. No hunger, because I had pancakes eggs and sausage! And all this because I never say no to an AA commitment. Once again, I was given an abundance of joy just because I suited up and showed up. Postscript: 2 weeks after I wrote this my husband, David, passed from his long ordeal with pancreatic cancer. The blessing is that David was able to have a brief visit with that long-lost friend.

“Sir, May I Suggest the Steps” Regarding this month’s topic, “Only a suggestion…” can we look to our literature for guidance? Certainly, two prominent references appear in the Big Book. On page 59 the very familiar, “Here are the steps we took which are suggested as a program of recovery”.

14

Page 15: The San Diego AA Coordinatoraasandiego.org/coordinator/coord-feb20.pdf · 2020-01-23 · commitment, we take seriously and make every attempt we can to meet the obligation. So, the

Some 80+ years later one might say that Bill was being modest when he wrote those words. Today, with millions having been granted a reprieve from an alcoholic death sentence as a result of these steps and this program, there is no doubt as to their effectiveness. But we should cut Bill some slack. Recall that when the book was written there were fewer than one hundred in the Fellowship, some no doubt sober only a few months and none longer than five years. They really couldn’t be sure this thing would work on a larger scale.

Were the Steps and the Big Book written today would there be justification for the use of a word stronger than “suggested” in these phrases? Let’s study this. We alcoholics tend to be somewhat obstinate individuals. One need only attend a group’s business meeting or steering committee to see evidence of that. No doubt throughout our lifetime many well-meaning family members and friends have suggested that we change our behavior, to no avail. As we progressed in our disease groups with greater authority – law enforcement, judges, etc., made suggestions with more teeth (court orders, etc.) which at times we chose to ignore.

The word “suggestion” seems to indicate that we have a choice. Many situations arise where choosing not to behave in the indicated manner can have unpleasant or even disastrous results. “Turn around and put your hands behind your back.” Ignoring this suggestion might lead to a charge of resisting arrest being added to your DUI. How about, “Severe tire damage may result from backing up.” Haven’t tested that one, yet. Or when you

are approaching an intersection and the light changes from yellow to red. Sure, you could just power through it but society and one’s own personal safety would indicate that stopping is the best decision.

Not taking the Steps in A.A. can and does have disastrous results. Should we not use stronger terms than “suggested” to convey our message?

I have always been somewhat taken aback when I see one of our members addressing a newcomer, or a group of newcomers, and saying with great emphasis,

Get a Book! Read it! Get a sponsor and work the Steps! Get down on your knees and pray to a Higher Power! Etc. Now I am not denying that these actions are extremely important if one is to achieve and maintain sobriety, however I would suggest that the obstinate newcomer being addressed in this fashion may not be able to swallow all of this at once. That was certainly true for this obstinate newcomer when I entered the rooms for the first time. I was given one suggestion that I could swallow, “Keep coming back”. And following that suggestion eventually led to following all the others. Bill got it right. A.A. is suggested as a program of recovery. And, it works!
