Neglect, the Elephant in the Room When we are satisfied that we have given steps one through five our best effort and have identified the most glaring defects of character and shortcomings, it’s now time to affect the changes in the most obvious of our faulty thoughts and the behaviors that stem from those thoughts by addressing them in steps six and seven. Committee Anouncement : The Newsletter Committee has openings for

members to prepare newsletter pages, to write articles, write poems, and to fold and collate the newsletter once a month. We also need submissions from the AA population at large! Following Coordinating Council Standing Committees need members.

Are you available to serve Alcoholics Anonymous? Availability is about; do I have the suggested sobriety? If there are other suggested qualifications, do I have those qualifications and to the best of my knowledge, do I have no scheduling conflicts to serve in the commitment? If my answers to all of those questions are yes, I should make myself available and let my Higher Power decide if that is the position I should be in.” Also, please talk to the members in your group about serving on the Council. Members at large may be elected to positions. It is not required that you are a Coordinator to serve on a committee.

Poem feature. Please submit your original poems to: [email protected]

200 words or less. It Didn’t Occur to me Then When I blacked out on the road I hit a car and put the driver in the hospital, It didn’t occur to me then. When I blacked out at a party and woke up with a stranger two days later, It didn’t occur to me then. When I stole a pint of gin, and nearly got caught, It didn’t occur to me then. Waking up on the carpet, with vomit all around me, It didn’t occur to me then. Father, mother, sister, brother, sober souls all. It didn’t occur to me then. My husband divorced me, disgusted. But it didn’t occur to me then. When lying in bed listening to a sad song. Hungry, angry, lonely, tired, It occurred to me that this had to end, and I reached for the phone. I talked to a salty old man, who said, Get to a meeting, gal, if not now, tomorrow. And I did. Looking around at all the smiles It really occurred to me that I was right where I was supposed to be.

Frequently Asked QuestionsA.A. (Pamphlet P-2, p 24)

"Most Alcoholics don't like to be told that they have to do anything for any extended period of time. At first glance, the prospect of having to attend A.A. meetings for all the years of the foreseeable future may seem a heavy load,.

The answer...is that no one has to do anything in A.A. There is always a choice between doing and not doing a thing - including the crucial choice of whether or not to seek sobriety through A.A."

Currently, we have two open nights each month,

the 10th & 12th that our AA phones are at risk of not being answered. Call-Forwarding is available for after-hours phones. There are 760 AA Groups in San Diego and only 31 Evenings and 5 Sundays.

Continued from page 1 shirking my responsibilities, it became obvious to me that if I wanted to regain some form of self-respect and dignity, I was going to have to put the word Neglect on my list of shortcomings and question my integrity. Do I do what is right even when there’s no one watching? If credibility is, always doing what I say I’m going to do, then Integrity, to me, is a whole bunch of credibility. To cut off my own escape I do routine things every day, that cost me nothing and the result of that is a clear conscience. If I am doing the little things that I should, I find it much easier to give the big things that same sort of attention. I never throw trash out of the car window, I pick up after myself, I never walk away from my bed in the morning without making it, and I liken that to being an unspoken prayer saying, I will be responsible, I will be orderly, I will be neat, and I will not be neglectful, I will be respectful, I will stay on the unselfish side of the ledger in all of my decisions, I sometimes revisit those pages in the Big Book and the 12&12 and I try my best not ignore the elephant in the room.

THE REMAINS OF THE DAY It is not my natural inclination to stay in “the present;” my mind wants to wander back into the past or forward into the future, diverting my attention and precious resources away from dealing with the issues that are at play right now in my life. Since becoming a member of A.A., however, my life has come to more and

more revolve around today - the only reality I truly have. There is probably no group around that places more value on the present than Alcoholics Anonymous. We A.A.s have determined to deal with our lives - and our sobriety - on a “one day at a time” basis. The idea of living in the present is not new, however, nor is it unique to AA. Many have espoused it. “Seize the day, put very little trust in tomorrow". (Horace, 23 BC) “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” (Matthew 6:24, NLT) “Perhaps, then, there is something to his advice that I should cease looking back so much, that I should adopt a more positive outlook and try to make the best of what remains of my day. … What is the point in worrying oneself too much about what one could or could not have done to control the course one’s life took?” (Ishiguro, Kazu, The Remains of the Day, pg 244) Now that I am figuratively writing the final chapters of my life story, living out the remains of my day, I still have many regrets that at times want to intrude themselves into my thinking. But, then, it is only natural that we who have experienced the full effects of the terrible dysfunction that comes while we are in the active embrace of our disease should have regrets. The key, though, is for us to stop returning to and obsessing over these regrets once we have recovered from a hopeless state of body and mind. For many years now, I have made great efforts to limit my reflections “on the past” to those on my recent past. But even there I have had to guard against any negativity or

self-chastising-type thinking cropping up as I take stock of my recent behavior. In this regard I have found it very helpful to follow the guidelines and suggestions offered by our program for dealing with these matters, some of which I have set out below.

“When we retire at night we constructively review our day. Were we resentful, selfish, dishonest or afraid? Do we owe an apology? Have we kept something to ourselves which should have been discussed with another person at once? Were we kind and loving toward all? What could we have done better? Were we thinking of ourselves most of the time? Or were we thinking of what we could do for others, of what we could pack into the stream of life? But we must be careful not to drift into worry, remorse or morbid reflection, for that would diminish our usefulness to others. After making our review we ask God’s forgiveness and inquire what corrective measures should be taken. (BB, pg 86)

Regarding whatever corrections to our thinking and behavior we may need to make in the future, we read the following: “Here we may ask God for inspiration, an intuitive thought or a decision. We relax and take it easy. We don’t struggle. We are often surprised how the right answers come after we have tried for a while. What used to be the hunch, or the occasional inspiration gradually becomes a working part of the mind. … (W)e find that our thinking will, as time passes, be more and more on the plane of

inspiration. We come to rely upon it.” (BB pg 86-87)

If I remain within the four corners of my day I can get a good start at making the corrections I need to make, while simultaneously keeping any paralyzing regrets stemming from past years at bay. Those reflections on my past have no real place in the life I am living today. I do my best to keep any negativity that enters my mind turned over to my Higher Power; I don’t do particularly well at dealing with it, so I give it all to Someone who knows just exactly what to do with it.

So, what can I say? Living here now in the remains of my day, in the final third of my life, I am finally at peace. And for a person like me to be able to reach a point where they can honestly say that – well, that’s just truly a miracle.

David L.

Although the strength of our program lies in the voluntary nature of membership in A.A., many of us first attended meetings because we were forced to, either by someone or something else or by inner discomfort. But continual exposure to A.A. educated us to the true nature of the illness… Who made the referral to A.A. is not what A.A. is interested in. It is the problem drinker who is our concern… We cannot predict who will recover, nor have we the authority to decide how recovery should be sought by any other alcoholic.
