All credit is due tothe owners of the Rendezvous Res-taurant – Glen and ColleenSchwendinger and to CaesarSherrard for putting in the extensivework necessary to make such anevent a reality. One would think thatthese are the kinds of things thatNICH would be doing, consideringthe prestige that an event like thisbrings to Belize. This type of eventcould also have been used as a teach-ing tool for young Belizean musician.Below is a list, along with brief biog-raphy of the international artist whoare committed to appear at the Ren-dezvous, December 17th and 18th,

Jazz in BelizeReprinted from the Amandala Belize by Frankie Rhys

McNulty is blessed with an exquisiteinstrumental and a natural sense ofswing. She is a true original and natu-rally gifted talent: a singer who meldsthe sounds of jazz, blues, pop and funkinto an intensely musical style. Paul Bollenback’s emotionallyexpressive style and eclectic ap-

proach is the result of years of lis-tening, studying and playing music byCarlos Santana, Yes, Wes Montgom-

Pharaoh Sanders and Joseph Jarman– they have established him as on ofthe leading lights of a younger gen-eration redefining jazz for the newcentury. Trinidadian-born, NYC – schooledand multi award winning trumpetplayer Nick “Brownman” Ali (pic-ture on front page) has been at theforefront of innovation in the Cana-dian jazz community for over a de-cade. He has close to 150 recording cred-its, many of these albums having wonor been nominated for Junos, whichare Canada’s most prestigious indus-try awards. composer/songwriter) has been in-volved in music for as far back as hecan remember. He started playingbass, piano and guitar while still inhigh school in his native Trinidad, per-forming in various groups, before tak-ing up the steel drum, during his lastyear of high school. Beginning withTokyo Steel Orchestra, he thenmoved on to Starlift Steel Orchestra, under legendary arranger RayHolmon, and was among the now fa-mous 18 members who left to form“Phase 2 Pan Groove” propelled by

the innovative arrangements of vir-tuoso steel drum player, BoogsieSharpe, a band which continues tobe one of the premier steel bands inthe world. Marco Solo is an internationalmusician, singer and pan flutecraftman who currently resides inGuatemala. Born Mark Weinstein inToledo, Ohio in 1952, he began hismusical journey with private instruc-tion with the then-unknown composerChip Davis, who went on to foundthe “Manheim Stemroller” and othersuccessful musical ventures.

Gary Thomas variously comparedwith saxophone greats such as WayneShorter, Billy Harper and JoeHenderson, has a grainy, sinewyhard-edged saxophone sound. His un-compromising musical stance and hisopen-eared approach to all forms ofcontemporary music – his albums in-corporate rap, standards, dancegrooves and synthesized electronic –mark him out as very much his ownman. Gary Thomas has developed hisown fresh approach to improvisation, avoiding bop clichés and taking solosthat are consistently full of surpris-ing twists and turns. He first began playing jazzas a high school freshman under the

direction of Mr. Ron Carter. By thetime he reached his junior year, hisplaying was attracting notice and hisname could be found on the calendarsof many of the nightclubs in the St.Louis area. Montez graduated fromLincoln Senior High School with a fullscholarship to Shaw University inNorth Carolina where he quickly be-came on of the most prominent mem-bers of the school’s jazz band. It’s hard to say what you might findmost exotic about island life, but a goodbet is that you’d be thrilled with the flocksof parakeets that fly over at all hours ofthe day. They are Olive-throated para-keets (Aratinga nana), once known asAztec Parakeets. These birds announcethemselves with their noisy, shriekingchatter as they fly in tight, fast-movinglittle flocks, dive-bombing into trees thatare a bit higher than the rest. Just as sud-denly, their screeching will stop and theysit still like little statues, looking around, until slowly they begin moving. Beforelong they make a circus of twig-climbingand, more than anything, preening andinteract with one another. Olive-throated parakeets are foundfrom Jamaica to the southern tip of Cen-tral America. They can live in elevationsas high as 700 meters and are primarily

found in Jamaica but can also be found inSt. Thomas, the Dominican Republic,Costa Rica, Mexico and CentralAmerica. They are common residentson the mainland of Belize and lucky forus they are regular winter visitors toAmbergris Caye and Caye Caulker. These parakeets are very colorfulbirds. They are green on their head, back, and tail and their throat and upper breastarea are olive, hence the name olive-throated parakeets. Their green colora-tion serves as camouflage and allowsthem to move through the rainforest with-

out being noticed. Their eyes are orangeand the bare skin around the eye is acream color. Lower on the body they aremore olive, and their feet are grey. Theyounger birds tend to have dark irises. They are readily distinguished from otherJamaican parrots by their smaller size, pointed tail, slender body, and rapidflight. Olive-throated parakeets have billswhich are large, hard, and curved down-ward. On average, they are usually 30centimeters long and they have a wing-span of 60 centimeters. There is no information given on themating behavior of the Olive-throatedparakeet but based upon research of simi-lar parrot families, the birds do have amating call that is sung by the male tomake the female aware that he is readyto mate. Unlike most birds where male/female bonds occur only during the breed-ing season, and function only in coordi-nating parental care, Olive-throated para-keets are monogamous. Perennial mo-nogamy, or year-round pair bonding, occurs in at least a dozen avian families, including cockatoos and other parrots. They breed one time during the springbetween April and May. At this time theylook for nesting sites in termite holes andlay three to five eggs which hatch in 26-27 days. After hatching, it takes about 50days until the fledglings are ready for their

independence. Although there is no specific data onthe communication behavior of thesenoisy parakeets, one can infer that theyuse sound as a primary tool in communi-

cating with one another. Males use thecontact call for mating and each bird pro-duces its own unique signature contactcall. Parrots also have flight calls whichmake it possible to exchange informa-tion on location of resources like food andshelter. Olive-throated parakeets feed mostlyon fruits and vegetables. They eat budsand fruits of many trees and cultivated

crops. Because of their strong bill andmuscular tongue they are able to seekout fruits and break seeds that would oth-erwise be difficult for other animals tocrack. They associate in flocks to shareinformation about food; like flight callsand frequent chatter between flying birdsand those in fruit trees exchanging infor-

mation. When feeding, parrots are me-thodical and slow-moving, using their billsas extra “hands” when searching for ripefruit. Many of the plants that the parakeetfeeds on have built up chemical and me-chanical defenses to ward off any pos-sible herbivores. Parrots, though, havebecome practically immune to theseplant’s defenses. To avoid mechanicalbarriers, parrots’ bills have evolved theability to crush the largest seeds and de-stroy most of the seeds they ingest. Tofight the chemical defenses of theseplants, they digest clay from riverbanksto detoxify the toxic chemicals in the seedor fruit. Alternatively, they avoid poison-ing themselves by eating small amountsof toxic seeds and combining that with alarger amount of harmless seeds, there-fore substantially decreasing the poten-tial harm. Sometimes Olive-throated parakeetswill damage cultivated crops and becomea pest. They are the most persistent im-mature-seed predators in the rainforestand make it hard for farmers to harvestcrops thoroughly. They also are preda-tors to plants and fruit trees by interrupt-ing and disrupting a tree’s dispersal strat-egy and hindering germination. Parrots, though, make it possible for other organ-isms in their ecological community to eat. When lurking through the rainforestcanopy, avoiding predators, parrots of-ten drop some of the fruits and seeds thatthey have been collecting. This allowssmaller organisms that are not in thecanopy like termites to eat. They alsodisperse the seeds of many plants. People often have parrots as pets. Theyare the most important group in the wild-life trade economically, and representeda F.O.B. (free on board) value of about$827,757.US in 1997. This value de-creased to about $450,004. in 2000 be-cause of smaller numbers being exported.Olive-throated parakeets are also impor-

tant in attracting tourists in Caribbean andtropical areas. Olive-throated parakeets do not haveany special status on the Endangered Spe-cies Act list and the United States Mi-gratory Act but are listed in Appendix IIof the Convention on International Tradein Endangered Species of Wild Fauna andFlora (CITES). One reason given for thelisting is the downward trend seen in theirpopulation since 1997. This trend is pri-marily based on loss of habitat and de-forestation. So the next time your hear a noisy flockof birds that fly in a tight group stop andtake a look. Once they settle in the treesthey are usually so well camouflaged thatchances are they will have been watch-ing you for a long time before you no-ticed one looking at you!

Dr. Herman Smith was the only PhDarcheologist to reside in Belize. He wasnoted in his field as a foremost re-searcher and expert in the coastal trad-ing of the Maya and headed the archaeo-logical development of Lamanai in Be-lize. Herman discovered and contrib-

uted much to the body of knowledge of the Maya once living on Ambergris Caye. If asked about this subject, he wouldgladly inform his listeners of the Maya past with detailed length and expansive arm waving. His humor accompanied thesemini-lectures, eliminating any academic dryness and endearing him to the students and groups that he worked with on sitesaround the island. He lived in Belize for over 12 years and eventually obtained Belizean citizenship. Dr. Herman Smith - U.S. MarineCorps pilot, decorated Vietnam veteran, archeologist, friend, and husband died on March 10th, 2000. Above all his manyaccomplishments from fighter piloting to practicing archeology – is that Herman was a friend to all in San Pedro. Hecontributed countless articles to The San Pedro Sun, articles that we are pleased to share with you once more.

For those interested in the Maya oc-cupation of the caye, a number of items

ago. Archaeologists have estimated thatthe population of Ambergris Caye in 800A.D. was somewhere between ten andtwenty thousand. Over thirty Maya siteshave been identified on the island and itis believed that many others are still hid-den in the jungle of the island interior. Some of the more interesting objectsleft behind by the ancient Maya are theblades and cores of obsidian, a naturallyoccurring glass produced by volcanicheat and pressure. Obsidian is not foundin Belize so the Maya traded for pre-pared cores from volcanic sources inGuatemala, Mexico and Honduras.Blades were struck from these cores toproduce cutting tools of incredible sharp-ness. Cores were made from obsidiancobbles found in stream beds adjacentto glass producing volcanoes. Oblong orfootball shaped cobbles were struck in away to produce a flat surface at one end. This flat area, or striking platform, wasthen chipped away along the outer edgeusing a deer antler and a small hammerstone. The larger blades could then befurther reduced by pressure flaking tomake projectile points or ornaments.Widely used throughout the westernhemisphere and the rest of the world aswell, obsidian blades, when freshlystruck from the core represent the sharp-est cutting edge known, several timessharper than a surgical steel scalpel. Infact, obsidian blades are currently in usein some U.S. hospitals for heart bypasssurgery. It seems that they cut cleaner, thereby promoting more rapid healing

with less scar tissue. Needless to say, obsidian blades constitute a considerablehazard to the unwary archaeologist who chooses to sift through soil in Maya siteswith unprotected hands. Even leather gloves are no guarantee against seriouscuts. The first flat blades struck from acore were flat and not particularly use-ful. Later blades were struck along pre-vious blade scars, producing a blade witha triangular cross-section, somethingarchaeologists call a backed or prismaticblade which has greater strength than aflat blade. It was this prism-like bladethat was widely used by the Maya as acutting tool. Eventually, the exhausted core wouldbe discarded or, in some cases incorpo-rated into jewel-like body adornments. One such core, found in Mexico, is en-graved with the figure of a bird of prey.A royal burial at Lamanai, Belize, con-tained 571 exhausted cores arrangedaround the head of the interred indi-vidual, suggesting they were part of ahead-dress. Each volcano produces glass with adistinctive chemical composition. Sci-entists using mass spectrometry havesucceeded in identifying the “signature”of many volcanoes known to have beensources of obsidian used in the manu-facturing of tools. Almost any blade orcore can now be traced to its source. One site on Ambergris Caye producednumerous obsidian blades along withexotic trade goods from all over Cen-tral America. X-ray fluorescence andneutron activation revealed the blades

Cookie BasicsKeep these tips in mind for a stress-freebaking spree. *Use unsalted butter in recipes that callfor butter. Margarine’s high water con-tent can affect cooking time. *Be prepared to bake a large varietyof cookies by freezing several rounds ofdough in advance. *Wrap cookie dough tightly in plasticwrap twice before freezing. *Cake-like cookie dough and cookieswith a very loose batter don’t freeze well. *Add a special touch to cookies by roll-ing them in colored sugar, finely choppednuts or sprinkles before baking. *If you don’t have a pastry bag fordecorating, place icing in a small zip-topbag and snip off one of the corners. *Lend a smooth, glossy finish to icingby warming it in a microwave or a bowlover simmering water. *Carefully wrapped baked cookies canbe frozen to preserve their freshness.

“Reynaldo is putting brake shoes on my golf cart,” Dulce said. “I want you totake me to the meeting for this wedding that I’m decorating tomorrow.” “Why don’t you just take my golf cart?” I asked. “I’m not driving that piece of junk,” Dulce said. “It won’t kill you to take me. Themeeting will only last a few minutes.” At the hotel, we sat on the deck while the people got together for the meeting. Thebride, Jenny, was the first to arrive. “I’m really nervous about this,” she told us. “My mom and dad got divorced thisyear. They both came for the wedding, but my dad brought his new wife with him.She is about the same age as me and she can sure be nasty when she wants to. Mymom is a real strong woman, though, and so far she’s been able to handle anythingthat little witch has thrown at her.” The father and his wife joined us, along with the groom and Dulce got thingsunderway. “OK,” Dulce finally said. “The only thing left is to decide what color flowers Iwill use for the parents’ corsages. For the men, who are wearing black suits, I’lljust use frangi pani. For you ladies, I need to know what color dresses you arewearing.” The bride’s mother went to her room and came back with a box. “This is the dress I brought to wear,” she said, pulling it from the box. “Mom, that dress is perfect,” the bride said. “You’ll look great in it.” “Hey, wait a minute,” the bride’s new mother-in-law said. “That’s the exactdress I brought to wear for the wedding.” “Would you consider getting a different one?” the bride asked. “I think my momwill look terrific in that dress.” “Not a chance,” the mother-in-law said. “That dress is perfect for me and I’mwearing it to the wedding. Come on Hank, let’s go to the bar and get a drink.” They left and the mother said to Jenny, “Don’t worry about it. I have anotherdress I can wear for the wedding.” “Mom, that dress is perfect for you,” her daughter said. “I would hate for you tohave to return the dress to the shop just because that little bitch has one just like it.” “Return it?” her mother said. “Don’t be silly. I’m wearing it to the rehearsaldinner.”
