Unit 383 is the American Contract Bridge League’s organization for all ACBL members in the Santa Fe area. During 2020, we will have Board meetings the second Thursday morning of every month except June and August; if you’d like to attend, please let one of the Board members know. Unit 383 is part of ACBL’s District 17, which covers Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and parts of four other states. District 17 publishes two email newsletters: the Scorecard (D17 Scorecard) is published in even-numbered months, and the Bridge Buzz (Bridge Buzz) is published in odd-numbered months. These newsletters provide information on upcoming tournaments. In order to receive these, make sure you have given the ACBL your correct email address, and make sure that you have added [email protected] to your list of permitted email contacts.

Unit 383 News
From Charlie Wilkins, President
ACBL Unit 383 Board of Directors Thanks to everyone – in particular, Unit Board members Sanya Schick and Sandy Lemon -- who helped make the annual Holiday Party (held Thursday December 12) a great event. During the Holiday Party, the Unit held a brief business meeting, at which we elected Directors for 2020: Pat Brantley, Ken Hirshon, and Sandy Lemon will continue in their two-year terms that started in January 2019. The following will start new two-year terms in January 2020: Maggie Auld, Tom Carr, Sanya Schick and myself. I’d like to say a special ‘thank you’ to Cheryl Graham, who served as the Unit’s Secretary for the past two years, and who has now retired from the Unit Board. Please mark your calendars for Thursday, March 12 which will be the annual Awards Game. We will briefly honor everyone who won the most masterpoints in their bracket during 2019, and we will honor those who made Life Master during 2019. The awards ceremony will start at 12:30; please bring a dessert and be there at 12:30 to help congratulate the awardees. Here’s a personal bridge story. I don’t know about you, but one of the big reasons I play bridge is that weird and funny things happen at the table. Here’s one from December: as dealer (none vulnerable), I picked up an attractive hand: Void AKQxx ATxxx xxx. I opened 1H, and the fun began. My left hand opponent overcalled one club (not a typo). Of course we said “Director please!”. The director said that my partner had the option of accepting the insufficient one club overcall. Partner said she would accept the one club bid, and then bid one heart. An unusual start to the auction: one heart, one club, one heart. My RHO passed. I wasn’t sure what partner meant by this one heart call, but – whatever else it meant – surely her hand included heart support. So I showed my second suit with a two diamond call, thinking that I would soon have a decision whether to bid game in hearts. LHO bid three clubs which was not a surprise, but then partner bid three spades which was a surprise. RHO thought about this for quite a while and bid four clubs. I still didn’t have much of a sense of what was going on, but I thought I was worth a four heart bid. Partner wasn’t done: 4NT (asking for keycards), I showed zero or three, and now partner surprised me again by bidding six diamonds. I passed, feeling certain that our diamond fit was at least as good as our heart fit. Double by LHO, all pass. LHO led the Ace of spades, and partner tabled this very suitable hand: Dummy: KQxxx xxx KQJxx Void Declarer: Void AKQxx ATxxx xxx Seconds later (when trumps broke 2-1), I was claiming thirteen tricks. Not surprisingly, plus 1190 was a top board. The board was played eight times, twice in six diamonds and six times in four hearts or five hearts. What a great game bridge is!

Santa Fe Bridge Center News (Leonard Helman Bridge Center)
From Carolyn Anderson, President
Santa Fe Bridge Center Board of Directors
Rhonda White and Ann Barker have resigned from the Board of Directors of the Santa Fe
Bridge Club for personal reasons. Consequently, at the Board’s January 28th regular
meeting, the remaining members of the Board will be selecting their replacements to
complete their terms of office, which end May 1, 2022. Anyone interested in being
considered for appointment to the Board should express their interest to Carolyn Anderson
prior to that date. The Board sincerely appreciates the contributions Rhonda and Ann
made while serving.
A message from the webmaster for the Santa Fe Bridge Club website:
In order to solve the traditional game results uploading issue I had to migrate your web site over to the newer bridge club web site platform. This newer system utilizes and features an automated player directory which is controlled by the players via their own account on the web site. No more having to manually update the player directory, names, numbers and so on. There are even places for an address, photo and ACBL Rank and improved partnership matching system. Those members would simply need to signup via the following link: https://santafebridgeclub.com/signup/ They will automatically appear in the player directory upon activation.
Please be advised the Morning games on Mondays and Fridays during the snow season will
not be held if the Santa Fe Schools are closed or on a 2-hour delay. Carolyn Anderson
and Art McHaffie will send out confirmations of this but cannot guarantee your internet
provider will deliver the message in a timely manner.

BRIDGE LIBRARY from Laurel Awishus
I am watching over the Club Library. Donations are welcome. Borrowing is welcome. Trading is welcome. Think of us as a Little Library. The Bridge Book bookcase is under the whiteboard. It is alphabetized (see lower shelves). The books range from a 1923 edition by Culbertson to Goren to Kantar. The top shelves are all current Audrey Grant and bridge encyclopedias. The tall bookcase next to table 3 is for assorted fiction and non-fiction. I’ve separated the fiction and non-fiction. I’ve not alphabetized them. Near the bottom there are some magazines, CDs and coffee table books.

New Class for Intermediates!
Killer Opening Leads With Dennis Dawson,
National Champion
Santa Fe Bridge Club 5 Wednesdays Starting January 29
9:30 – 11:30 The opening lead is the single most important card the defense will play. Find the lead that kills the declarer, not the defense! Do so by first picking the suit to lead by listening to the bidding, not by looking at what you have in each suit! Some things to think about are:
• Is an active or a passive defense is for?
• Does the contract sound like it will make easily or is it touch-and-go?
• What do you expect the dummy to have?
• What do you expect the declarer to have?
• What will declarer’s plan be? How can you thwart it?
• What is the right card to lead in the suit you choose? Your opening leads will improve, and you will gain confidence to tackle even the most difficult leads. Practice what you’ve learned by playing 4 hands. Notes are included. You don’t need a partner.
• $149 per person if paid by January 24
• $169 per person if paid after January 24
• $40 per class
To register, email [email protected], then send a check to: 105 Michelle Dr Santa Fe, NM 87501

Planning the Play of the Hand I
This class will be taught from 9:30-11:30 on three successive Saturdays: February
8, 15, and 22. The instructor is James Joy, a sapphire life master with over four
thousand points. Each week there will be 18-20 hands. You will know the bidding,
the opening lead and you will see the dummy. Your task will be to find the best
line of play. After you have made up your mind, we will discuss the best line of
play … and why.
Topics include: using dummy’s trumps for ruffing, setting up a long suit in dummy,
basic odds, clues from the bidding and the opening lead, simple squeezes, dummy
reversals, trump coups, combining chances, deceptive plays, endplays, counting,
setting up a quick pitch, cross-ruffing, keeping the dangerous opponent off lead,
and safety plays.
The cost for all three classes is $60 or, if you can’t make all three classes, $25 per
class. Please let me know if you are planning to take this class so I can prepare the
appropriate number of materials. Email me at: [email protected] . The
minimum number of participants is 12.
This class is designed for intermediate or advanced players. It is not suited for
beginners.
