RESTORING SIGHT IN BIHAR EYE-CARE

Bihar state has one of the highest volumes of blind people from the curable condition of cataract, with an estimated number of 560,000 needlessly blind, this is one of the highest concentrations in India. The reason for this is due to the volume residing in rural areas and the lack of accessibility to eye care facilities. One hospital is doing something about this, the Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital (AJEH) located in Mastichak Saran district conducted 64,815 surgeries of which 54,902 were done completely free of cost. The Savitri Waney Charitable Foundation funded 20,000 of these at Rs. 1,600 subsidy per surgery. The hospital reaches out to those who are blind by conducting wide spread screening and follow up camps. Laxman Mahto is 60 years old from Khorika (Sonpur) he is married with 3 daughters and 3 sons. He is illiterate and works as a farmer, there are 8 people living in his household and the household income is Rs. 3,000 – 3,500, their total family assets are 2 goats and the house. In 2013, Laxman became blind from cataract, he was only able to see counting fingers close up in the better eye. He could not do anything for himself, he felt very helpless, and he could not do any work. He recounts “my son did not help me very much, it was because of my neighbour, he told me about the work of AJEH and that I can be cured. I did not pay anything for the surgery or stay there. I did not have the money to go to a private hospital, but I am glad I went to AJEH, I had a good experience there. Now I am feeling very good, I am able to do my work, I am very happy.”

SUSTAINING EYE-CARE EYE-CARE

New Secondary Eye Hospital LVPEI Berhampur, Odisha

L.V. Prasad Eye Institute is a state of the art eye care institution providing quality eye care, education and research for 25 years in India. In 2006 LVPEI extended its services to Odisha, Bhubaneswar to provide high quality eye care, technical personnel and eye doctors. Odisha has a population of 40 million, it is estimated there are 347,000 blind from cataract alone. To cater to this need, SWCF has partnered with LVPEI to construct a new secondary eye hospital in Berhampur. The construction is due to complete in winter of 2015.

New Wing at AJEH Mastichak, Bihar

SWCF was approached by the Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital in Bihar to assist with the construction costs of a new 6 storey building to give shelter to the pre-operative patients, staff and a new staff canteen.

SWCF supported one floor of the building which will give comfortable accommodation to 75 pre-operative patients. The previous accommodation for these patients was a shed-like structure where patients only had a basic mat to sleep on, therefore the need was obvious and SWCF is delighted to be one of the supporters for this construction.

PHYSIOTHERAPY AND LYMPHEDEMA

PALLIATIVE CARE

In November 2015, SWCF started to support the palliative care project that provides care to patients who are disabled or are suffering from any terminal illness to improve their mobility, psycho-social and emotional wellbeing, and independence. The project delivered care to 83 patients, 42 adult patients and 21 children for physiotherapy, and 20 adults (all female) for lymphedema treatment. The home care team comprising of the project doctor, nurse and social worker made 235 contacts including phone calls and visits to the patient’s homes. The project aims to raise awareness in the wider community hosting events, this year three were conducted on child palliative care awareness, a fun run disabled patients participated and campaign for wheelchair access. Jyoti Kumar (pictured below at event Art on Wheels) was a contractor before he met with a road accident and became paralysed. Because of this project, today he is able to ride a scooter, paint and make woodcraft for customers. Our Partner: Pallium India www.pallium.org

EVALUATION OF PALLIATIVE CARE MODEL

PALLIATIVE CARE

Pallium India NGO based in Trivandrum has a unique project model that is scalable. The model is to partner with government or charity based hospitals that do not currently have palliative care services; train the doctor and nurse team in palliative care and provide handholding for 2 years thereafter to ensure the project is a success. The Savitri Foundation funded an evaluation study to see just how sustainable the 11 health centres and 2 training centres were. The study result shows that the model is 73% success rate. COUNSELLING CHILD CARE

This room pictured above is very special; it is the counselling room for the boys who are attending the correctional home of David Sassoon Industrial School (DSIS) in Mumbai. The Savitri Foundation partners with OJUS Medical Institution (OMI) to deliver a counselling and workshops project at DSIS. Through the hard work of DSIS, CAS and OMI staff these 160 boys who have been abandoned, orphaned or who have committed a crime now have a trained clinical psychologist to talk to. This year, 138 one-to-one counselling sessions were conducted at DSIS and 41 workshops for the correctional homes of DSIS, Dongri and Chembur benefitting 1,411 children and staff members. EGG DOT PROJECT CHILD CARE

Goal: To create a community based sustainable model of healthcare services for severely malnourished children living in rural villages of India.

Purpose: To identify and provide community based treatment and access to government services of those children who are severe acute malnourished (SAM) and over time through health education and awareness help improve to moderate acute malnourished (MAM) status, also to educate the caregivers of MAM children to reduce the reoccurrence to SAM status. Project reaches out to 52 villages in the Igatpuri area of Nasik District in Maharashtra.

Outputs: A total of 178 SAM children were enrolled in the supplementary programme this year. Education was given one-on-one to these 178 caregivers and in group sessions to the caregivers of 206 MAM children.

Prevalence: Why is there so much child malnutrition in India? The project can identify that large family size with very low income is the primary reason. Even with access to supplementary feeding at the Anganwadi’s, this might be their only meal of the day which is not enough to sustain a growing child.

Deficiency: On average these severely malnourished children are missing 350kcal from their daily diet. The Egg Dot Project provides a supplement of egg, ghee and soya milk, coupled with continuous education by the trained local community health workers and doctor about the importance of health, hygiene and nutrition to the caregivers gives results within 6 months on average.

NATURAL RESOURCES LIVELIHOODS

Khirodhan Singh is 46 years old from Chindiya, Balrampur, Korea in Chhattisgarh state. He completed his 5th standard. He has 2 acres of land and lives in a kachha house earning Rs. 25,000 per annum to feed the 7 members of his household. Khirodhan applied to the local Panchayat and Action for Social Advancement (ASA) to be considered for the dug-well project support. The ASA team conducted the survey to assess his eligibility and Khirodhan was selected for the financial support of Rs. 50,000 to construct the well, in addition to this Khirodhan had to mortgage his land to completely cover the costs of construction which he plans to pay back within 2-3 years. His dream is to be able to cultivate in Kharif and Rabi season to increase his annual income to Rs. 1 lakh. He has already attended training in seeds for paddy and organic farming practices to reduce the costs of inputs. Khirodhan is just one of the 35 farming families who received support this year to construct their own dug wells, each of the 12 wells supports 2-3 farming families. In addition to this 6 lift irrigation schemes were installed benefitting 264 farming families this year.
