SANDBACH MP Fiona Bruce helped out St Luke’s volunteers Julie Hill-Smith and Mary Cleal at an appeal in Holmes Chapel. Mrs Bruce said: “The growing commitment of St Luke’s volunteers never ceases to amaze me as well as the variety of projects which they

undertake for the Hospice. “It was a pleasure to hear today from Julie Hill Smith of the work which she and her husband have done to put in an irrigation system for the St Luke’s vegetable garden assisted with advice from Morrey’s of Holmes Chapel.”

WHEELOCK Methodist church celebrated the building’s 140th anniversary last month with an exhibition of the church’s history. To mark the milestone three trees were also planted by members of the church. The first tree was planted by the church’s oldest parishioner with the assistance of Rev

Rebecca Ingrouille, who will be ordained next week in Coventry. The second tree was the responsibility of Doreen Lowe, who helps to keep the gardens at the church in pristine condition, while tree number three was planted on behalf of the Beavers and Cubs who meet at the church.

by STEWART GREENTHE world famous Foden’s Band performed in Sandbach Park for the third year running earlier this month. The band played alongside ‘Out of the Blues’, a jazz vocal group from Sandbach School who entertained the early visitors with a number of classic songs and ‘jazzed up’ pop tunes. Foden’s Band took to the stage at 8pm in the summer sunshine. Solo performances from Richard Poole, Mark Wilkinson, John Barber, Helen Williams and Glyn Williams showed the versatility of the players.

The popular Moon River, the James Bond Collection and the standard John Peel were also enjoyed by the audience. Eight-year-old Erin Knowles celebrated her birthday at the concert and was invited by conductor Michael Fowles to take over the baton for part of the Fantasia on British Sea Songs. With the conductors baton back with Michael the band played the usual proms-style ending with firework accompaniment and the audience went home having enjoyed another wonderful concert in the park.

Music in the parkPLANS for 250 houses and a business park, including a drive thru café and hotel, have been approved by Cheshire East Council despite concerns about access to the site. Sam Corcoran, Labour Councillor for Sandbach Heath and East, said: “This is déjà vu for me. “Ten years ago an outline planning application for a decent business park on this site was approved by Congleton Borough Council planning committee - with no houses. “A rival application by Halfmoon Investments Ltd for a get rich quick scheme on part of the site was then granted full planning permission, scuppering the business park plans until planning permission expired in 2008. “Now the prospects of a decent business park have

again been scuppered by the approval for a get rich quick scheme for housing with promises for an enlarged roundabout by J17 and employment opportunities that will not be fulfilled. “I correctly predicted ten years ago that the Halfmoon scheme would not lead to a decent business park being built. “I predict again now that this latest scheme will not lead to a decent business park but instead the developers will come back to the Cheshire East Council Strategic Planning Board asking for variations to the conditions. “I am not convinced by the developer’s denial that what they are after here is some preliminary housing so that they can then, once that’s done, convert the rest into housing.”

Plans spark‘deja vu’

Brass on the Squareby STEWART GREENSANDBACH has been treated to an abundance of brass band music this month. The music started in the town square with a concert by Roberts Bakery Band. The band was led by 12 international conductors who were being taught by Alan Withington as part of his annual Conducting School.

The conductors spent the week with Alan and then performed in front of the Roberts Bakery Band for the open air lunchtime concert. They then went on to spend two days with Foden’s Band and a final concert at Sandbach Schools Theatre. Students came from across Europe and as far away as South Africa to do the course.

ADVENTUROUS Sandbach resident Dave Hursthouse has completed the Three Peaks Challenge for charity - with the added twist of cycling between each of the heights. Dave, a 50-year-old IT director, decided to raise money for the RNLI after he suffered a sailing accident in Abersoch in 2007. He’s been fundraising for them ever since via various sporting challenges including half marathons, open water swims and triathlons raising just over £10,000 Dave took on this latest challenge with two fellow fundraisers to scale the heights of Snowdon, Scafel Pike and Ben Nevis while cycling just over 400 miles between them Dave was rescued by a

lifeboat crew after a sailing accident seven years ago when he was struck in the face by the yacht’s boom. He explained: ‘The RNLI

volunteers were quick to come to my aid and I don’t think I’ll ever feel that debt has been repaid.” Of his latest escapade, Dave

added: “So far we’re on track to raise just over £6,000 which is nicely over our original target of £2k! “I would like to say a massive thanks for all the support, donations and well wishes. It really helped to push us along when the going got tough!” People can still make a donation by visiting the fundraising page at www.justgiving.com/RNLI-3peaksByBike.

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a number of bicycles were stolen in Sandbach between June 29 and July 6. A total of eight bikes, mainly mountain bikes, were taken after being left unsecured outside shops in the town centre

and on Lodge Road. Police are looking for a man described as about 6ft tall, of slim build, wearing a black t-shirt, dark jeans and trainers. Anyone with information should call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 400 of July 6.

by STEWART GREENTHE Mercian Regiment has been awarded the Freedom of Sandbach Town. The award was made during last month’s Armed Forces Day, which saw a stunning ceremony and parade in the town. Thousands of people turned out to see the Royal British Legion, local military and scouting groups along with troops from the (1 Mercian) First Battalion of the Mercian Regiment who represented the 3 Battalions of the Mercians who have just been renamed after

the counties they now represent. Second in Command, Major Rob Prentice grew up in Sandbach, when he attended Elworth Primary School. The soldiers marched from Westfield’s to the Market Square and then onto a service at St Mary’s before marching to the Town Hall for a reception to celebrate the occasion. Town Mayor Elsie Alcock handed over the freedom to Lt Col Mark Ellwood MBE, with the High Sheriff of Cheshire, Susan Sellers, MP Fiona Bruce and representatives of the Royal British Legion in attendance.

(cont. from front)producing a draft plan. Mr Knowlson added: “Once the draft plan has been reviewed and approved by an inspector there will be a referendum in which all residents will be encouraged to vote. “It is crucial that there is a high turnout and a large majority in favour to enable the successful adoption of the plan. “There is a huge amount of work which needs to be undertaken to achieve thi. “However the reward will hopefully be a robust and sustainable plan that will provide a vision and protection for Sandbach, our community and way of life for years to come. “Community support for the project is vital and volunteers to help are essential. “If this project excites you or you have been angered by the scale of development around the town or erosion of our quality of life then now is the time put your energies and frustrations to good use and help create a robust plan that will guide the town for years to come. “Please contact one of the action groups and register your support.”

THE 15th annual Donkey Derby took place at Sandbach Rugby Club on Saturday July 5. It was accompanied by the usual side shows including plate smashing, a fun fair and Sandbach Fire Brigade along with Bubble Footie where

contestants get into giant balloons to play the game. The derby races started at 1pm with various heats in the lead up to the 4pm final. Large crowds took advantage of the sunny afternoon to join in the fun.

Hitting the right notesby STEWART GREENTHE final performances in the Sandbach Concert Series proved a huge success with jazz duo Tina May and Nikki Iles headlining the evening. The first part of the concert was performed by the Love Music Trust’s junior and senior Percussion Ensembles who played arrangements of the James Bond Theme and a Michael Jackson medley of tunes as well as the theme to Sex and the City. The main artists were then invited to entertain regular and new patrons of the concerts with some jazz singing and playing. During the interval Town Mayor Elsie Alcock and her husband Graham were given some

instruction on the xylophone by the Love Music Trust pupils. Lauren and Andy Scott, the main organisers of the event were presented with gifts of appreciation by former mayor Mike Benson. The concert series now takes a break until September 24 when ‘Zephyr Winds’ a wind quintet led by Chris Swann will appear in the fifth season of concerts. This season has seen a number of gifted youngsters performing before the main artists, providing a real showcase for local talent. Organisers are already planning for next season and hoping it will prove just as successful with even more performers bringing a diverse programme to Sandbach.

A day at the races

A DEAL has been signed between Sandbach Town Council and Cheshire East that will see market stalls return to the High Street and Market Square this summer. Town centre businesses, market traders and residents have expressed support for the scheme that will see the parking bays on the High street and the historic Market Square available on Thursdays for market stalls.

Michael Wellings, of Sandbach Town Council, said: “We have been waiting a long time for this. “Bringing some of the market into the town centre will add some colour to our already picturesque High Street and will free up parking on the Scotch Common, which has been a problem on market days in the past, but will not affect the flow of traffic on the road.”

BOUNCING BACKELWORTH CC are looking to bounce straight back from relegation after a promising start to the season. Currentlly chasing the top two positions to secure promotion back into Premier Division, Elworth have been enjoying much success. The First XI recently produced their first ten wicket win since 1976, at home to Audley. On the back of an early finish the week earlier, Elworth were celebrating again having comprehensively seen off the opposition. Elworth bowled them out for just 66 runs; Ali 5-42 from 17, Holt 3-18 from 15 and Brown 2 wickets 1 run from 2 overs. Elworth were ruthless in the field with a highlight being Matt Winter taking five catches in the field on his return to the club after playing for university. Talking of the club’s recent success, spokesman Lee Morris singled out the side’s formidable bowling attack. He said: “Michael Holt and Yasir Ali have both been

excellent, as has offspinner Jason Brown. “Things are going very well at the moment and we are getting some players returning from university, which will obviously give us more options. “We also have some fine young players coming through in our second team, who are quickly gaining experience. “Some of the youth sides are also doing well and we are keen to encourage them at an early age. “We receive some really great support on match days, both at home and away. “We have a fantastic ground and hopefully we get staright back into the premier division.” The club purchased its own ground and clubhouse last year and is now looking to develop a further 0.7 acres of land adjacent to the ground, which Cheshire East Council has agreed to sell to the club. The club is looking to develop the site to provide junior training facilities at a cost of some £20,000.
