SANDBACH’S local economy could be hit by plans to build a new 25,000 square foot foodstore in neighbouring Holmes Chapel. Sainsbury’s have submitted an application to build a new supermarket on the site of the former Fisons building on London Road – creating 175 full and part-time jobs. The proposals include a petrol station, 260 parking spaces and a recycling centre with developers Bluemantle hailing public support. “We were delighted with the outcome of the recent public consulation,” said director

Simon Isherwood. “The overwhelming majority of respondents (78 per cent) were supportive of our proposals.” In the past Cheshire-based Muller Property Group argued that Sandbach needed more retail and employment investment, which they looked to deliver in the Old Mill Quarter project. Lack of supportRe: Fighting planning appealsIT is the apparent lack of MP support that contributes to the lack of engagement from most residents. But whilst waiting for the planning rules to change what can Cheshire East council do other than challenge the appeals? Is there something residents can do to support the council in this matter? The developers seem to treat the rejection of planning consent as a minor blip, going to appeal, rather respecting the wishes of the local community. I do wonder how much profit the developers must make on each development if they can afford costs at this level as a matter of course? No matter how they dress it up the developers’ motivation is profit. - Carol Holland, Mortimer Drive

RE: Dingle FarmI WOULD like to express my absolute disgust at the council’s decision to approve the partial demolition of a listed building for access to a development site. The council should know that a building is listed internally and externally and should remain intact. No part of the listed building is “less historic” than any other. That the council can even consider treating a listed building in such a cavalier way is extremely alarming. This is extreme folly and I hope that the council will see sense. There is the opportunity to refurbish the existing building with an imaginative and sensitive approach which will set the standards of good design for the whole of Sandbach. - Nicola Coxon

Setting standards

Re: Dingle FarmI FEEL exasperated at this council at the moment. Surely we should be trying to protect places of beauty and history. Why do we need more houses in this already crowded town? Sandbach has grown tremendously since I moved here in 1980 yet there are no more schools and the same leisure centre with limited facilities. We already have to think three weeks in advance of needing a doctors appointment. I wonder if the council are on a mission to completely spoil the lovely market town that Sandbach is. What makes Sandbach a bit different from other towns around here is that it basically has some lovely old buildings and that is what gives it its character. People don’t remember it for the massive amount of boring, modern houses, crammed in without about three feet between them. They have already spoiled the canal at Ettiley Heath with the hundreds of modern eye-sores they are building! - Mrs K Edwards

Council missionFarm plans are in keeping with eraI WOULD just like to add my support to Dingle Farm being developed as plans show and approved by the planning officer. From what I understand the actual alteration to the external structure of the farmhouse is

minimal and certainly still in keeping with the era of when it was built. There is clearly space for the construction of 11 attractive dwellings. It will be anappealing site, especially so close to town. - Nick Reed

Concerns over costs of planned town hall faceliftA ROW has erupted about the planned refurbishment of Sandbach Town Hall. Local Labour councillors have questioned the ‘escalating costs’ of the proposed makeover of the venue. At a meeting of the town council, members voiced their concerns over plans to spend £450,000 on the hall, which has just been taken over from Cheshire East Council. While they supported the principle of improving the building, which is a Grade 2 listed building, they expressed doubts over the information provided, the cost of the works and the results of the public consultation. Labour councillors proposed reducing the costs by not building an information kiosk in the portico outside. Excluding these ‘external works to front elevation’ would have saved £27,500, but the proposal

was defeated. Concerns were also expressed over the £60,000 cost of the new lighting and the £20,000 cost of the works on the existing ‘mezzanine’ bar area. Councillor Ursula Griffiths said: “It is regrettable that so much information has been labelled as confidential and withheld from the public.” Councillor Richard Hoffmann

added: “This proposal to spend £450,000 is certainly the biggest financial commitment Sandbach Town Council has ever made. “I would have liked to have seen a report giving details of the reasons behind the proposal, including a full analysis of the public consultation responses.” But Clr Carolyn Lowe, leading the project, said: “We took ownership of the town hall knowing that it was a tired and dated venue with an

operational loss of £67,000 per annum. “It had been left to stagnate and was not an attractive venue. “The council has committed to making this significant building an asset for the town, making it an attractive venue for weddings, conferences, parties, dances, shows and productions and reversing its losses.”

Hall or nothingA BUS service between Sandbach and Biddulph has been cut. The Bakerbus Harrier X38 stopped running last month due to a reduction in subsidies. Bakerbus MD Phil Baker said: “Given that central government and local government grants have been reduced, it is no longer profitable for us to operate some of these services.”

THE Rotary Club of Sandbach Crosses are always on the lookout for new members. The club meet at Gee’s Kitchen on Tuesday evenings. Anyone interested in joining can contact Rtn Ron Smith on 01270 764254.

A FORMER tip near Sandbach is set to be filled in and transformed into a wildlife conservation area. The applicant Hays Plc has asked Cheshire East Council for permission to cover the former tip at Roughwood Lane, Hassall Green. The site was originally a sand quarry until it was commissioned in 1956 by BP Chemical Ltd to be used for dumping industrial waste, asbestos sheeting and construction waste. The site was in use until the 1980s. A report to the council says: “The application proposes to remediate the former tip to enable the land to be used for informal recreation and open space. “It is anticipated the works will take 12-weeks to complete and would require the importation

of approximately 3,600m3 of fill material. “This is anticipated to generate approximately 1,000 vehicle movements in total, an average of 15 in and 15 out a day.” A number of local residents have raised concerns over the plans. One said: “The area will become a magnet for anti social behavior as are the laybys at present, the problem of speeding cars at all hours will become worse.” When complete, the site would be transferred to the Land Trust, which would manage the site as a wildlife conservation area. Members of the public would be allowed in to learn about conservation, initially on a request-only basis. Parking will also be available at the site. What do you think? Olivia in beauty finalSANDBACH teenager Olivia Davidson-Slack will finally appear in a beauty pageant – a year after being hit by a car as she was about to take part in the final. Olivia was knocked out in the accident and suffered bleeding on the brain and concussion. Her 18-year-old sister Emelia was left fighting for life in intensive care with a broken back and sternum. Olivia didn’t enter the competition because of her injuries. She was selected for the competition when she was spotted at the The Clothes Show in Birmingham last year. She was picked to represent Cheshire East in the Miss Teen UK final and chose to raise money for the Claire House Children’s Hospice and Cancer Research UK, by selling sweets and holding fund-raisers. But seven days before the competition Olivia and Emelia were hit by a car travelling at about 50mph while walking to a garage on the A534. They were taken to hospital where Emelia remained in intensive care for three days.

Olivia, who has again pledged to raise money for Claire House, said: “My sister and I were so lucky to recover from our accident but so many children are less fortunate than we are. “Claire House Hospice is there to help those children and their families in their time of need.” To make a donation visit www.justgiving.com/Olivia-Davidson-Slack. If she wins the competition Olivia will be given a modelling contract and the chance raise the profile of her chosen charities.

At the top end the highest numbers of A/A* papers were recorded at just under 30%, as well as the best ever A*-C grades of 77.8%. Head teacher Sarah Burns said she was absolutely delighted with the efforts of the students. She said: “These fantastic results are a reflection of the strength of the teamwork

between the students and the teachers and the drive to secure outstanding levels of achievement.” Individual successes include Silas Elliott who gained 2 A* and 2As to take up his place at St John’s College, Oxford. Head boy Jonathon Davies, who gained 1A* and 2As, is taking a gap year to work at a link school in Hong Kong and then will read Law at Reading. SANDBACH woman Jennifer Edlington is raising money to help those who saved her life. Jen, the daughter of Sandbach Town Mayor Mike Benson, is working to raise cash for the North West Air Ambulance. She said: “On Sunday 2nd September 2012 I went to Darwen, Blackburn for a motorbike lesson. “It was a normal day and I was progressing well, until I lost control of my bike. “The last thing I remember was a fence rushing to meet me.” Paramedics arrived on the scene and called the North West Air Ambulance, who flew Jen to the Preston Royal Hospital. Jen explained: “My journey took just four minutes. “I spent five days in intensive care and underwent emergency surgery on my spine which was broken in twoplaces. “I also had collapsed lungs, a broken pelvis, broken ribs, a broken shoulder and a broken

collar bone.” Following treatment, physiotherapy and plenty of bed rest, Jen eventually walked out of hospital on October 1. She added: “I am in no doubt that my amazing recovery is thanks to the NWAA and all of the medical teams. “I will be organising some small events to raise money and hopefully in 2014 I would like to attempt either a trek to Everest base camp or a dog sled

challenge across a section of the arctic, or a jungle adventure trek - you’re probably realising I don’t do easy stuff!” “The air ambulance undertook 1,435 missions in 2012 which means my rescue cost approximately £3,000. “My target is 10% of this amount in 2013, and then the remaining 90% in 2014.” To support Jens’s efforts, visit www.justgiving.com/jennifer-edlington.

SANDBACH Folk Club has raised £300 for Christie’s Hospital Manchester in memory of long-standing resident John Stoker. Last month’s special concert at The Market Tavern was hailed a fitting tribute. “We had a great night and the club was packed out with faces old and new,” said a spokesperson. “It was a fitting tribute to John as performers and the audience paid tribute and showed how much love, affection and respect there was for him. “£270 was raised on the door which the club will round off to £300 to donate to Christie’s.”

On the up SANDBACH RUFC manager Stuart Battersby has targeted a top-six finish ahead of this month’s big kick-off. A largely unchanged first-team squad start their second-ever season at national level with a tricky trip to Longton on Saturday, September 7. Although quick to play down expectations, Battersby insists the club will be looking to improve on their debut campaign in NL3 (Midlands).

“Beating last year is an obvious target,” he explained. “If we can finish higher than seventh and hold our own it will be an excellent year. “The teams change so much you never know how it will all pan out. “But we’re just focused on what we can do.” Fly-half Will Cargill (pictured) looks set to move on to RFU Championship outfit Leeds Carnegie in the only real

change in personnel. “We’ll miss Will although he’ll still have dual registration and it’s obviously good for Sandbach to see the boys moving up,” added Battersby. “We’ve kept the same group of players together really who will be one year older with one year of experience at this level now under their belts. “There’s a great spirit around the place and we’re looking forward to the season.”
