Front Cover WinnerA huge ‘thank you’ to St James’ CE Primary School, Haslingden, for participating in our front cover competition and supplying so many

marvellously bright, summery pictures. They put a cheery smile on our face! We received some brilliant entries. Thank you all for your hard

work.

‘Congratulations’ to Nikita Samuels, aged 10, who drew the fantastic ‘Fun’ picture, she says, “this reminds me of summer because of

all the bright colours”. Many thanks to Miss Collinge, Mr Mashiter and Mrs Livesey at St James’

School, for their help and assistance in organising this competition.

CONTENTSWelcome to our 29th issue, the very first bumper 32 page

magazine we have produced. The response has been fantastic; The Scallywag has not just come of age, but I am proud to say, is widely viewed now as the essential, local ‘must-have’ publication. Its success is mainly thanks to you, by reading it, supporting the published events, keeping us updated with new initiatives and projects, and importantly, by supporting the advertisers, without whom this magazine could not be printed and distributed free of charge.

Back to this summer issue, which is cram packed with features and ideas for things to do, both indoors and out. So you shouldn’t be stuck for activities to keep your family amused over the fast-approaching summer holiday. Our Out & About section features the Forest of Bowland, an area of outstanding beauty, in the Ribble Valley and for those willing to travel further afield for a day out, The Forbidden Corner in Leyburn, North Yorkshire.

For activities closer to home, keep an eye on upcoming events. For example, the enormously successful Fun 4 Families holiday activities programme, an exciting Doorstep Bus Project, with ‘stops’ in Bacup and Stacksteads; and we must mention the Week of Wonderful Things at St Mary’s School, Rawtenstall that looks, well, wonderful! Not to mention the ever-popular Family Theatre Week. Why not book a session or two and go along, give these fantastic initiatives your support, and have fun into the bargain?

There is so much on offer in Rossendale this summer to do, inside and out, that having bored youngsters is not going to be possible! The long holiday break will fly past – honest!

Enjoy your summer holiday!Tracey

Our week will end with a celebratory dinner on the Friday evening. All children who attend any part of the week and their families, facilitators of activities and school staff will be invited. The dinner will be used to showcase what the children have experienced and, where appropriate, to perform newly learnt skills and serve some of the foods they’ve created during Friday’s Party Day.

first tiger graduations

Young Tiger Cubs, James Tongue, Harvey Bell and Elliot Vidler have become the first Tiger Cubs to gain all of the merit badges required to graduate to the main Karate

Class at Rossendale Shotokan Karate Club. Sensei Ian Garside said that all three boys have done exceptionally well and all are very excited about joining the main class, held on Tuesdays and Sundays at All Saints Catholic Language College, Rawtenstall.

The Kindergarten classes for 4-6 year olds, which started back in February 2012, run on Tuesday evenings from 4.30 to 5.30pm at Haslingden Sports Centre. Since then the children have grown in self-confidence, self-control, and teamwork, and the introduction of merit badges has stimulated the children’s sense of achievement and encouraged them to practice at home. Once the child is confident enough and has completed the Tiger Cubs Programme they can move on to the main class.

The Tiger Cubs programme is balanced between learning Karate and having fun in an exciting atmosphere, but one which is more relaxed than the senior classes. Various games are used to foster the child’s individual growth and development, whilst also encouraging interaction with other children in a group setting- essential for teamworking. What is especially good to see is how the older children help and encourage the younger ones.

Elliot’s Mum says “Elliot has thoroughly enjoyed his Tuesday afternoons at Kindergarten Karate and has grown enormously in confidence. He hasn’t shown much interest in the more competitive sports, but Karate is proving to be a perfect pastime for him: he is keeping fit, improving his balance and coordination, learning self-discipline and having great fun with new friends all at the same time. Having joined the main Karate class, he is very eager to succeed and is practising his moves of an evening with his dad in our living room!

Patrick of PDL Creations is a very experienced joiner, successfully operating in the Hyndburn and

Rossendale areas for over 20 years. One secret of his success has been that he operates on

a ‘No job too big or small’ basis, at reasonable prices, with high-quality work guaranteed. With his extensive experience, Patrick can make anything with wood, from coat holders to fitted wardrobes and book cases. Maybe your sash or traditional wooden-framed windows are tired, rotten and draughty? Patrick can help you to solve this problem, by replacing the old one with a new window to match the existing ones. In another example of the breadth of his work, Patrick has recently completed a beautifully-crafted garden shed, to the owner’s bespoke requirements. So, whether you need a heated garden office, a tree house for the children, bicycle storage, animal housing or just a new potting shed, call Patrick at PDL joinery for your free quotation- because the other secret of Patrick’s success is total customer satisfaction.

Dansworks Dance Academy and the Maden Community and Children’s Centre have formed a partnership to

deliver the ‘Let’s Get Physical’, initiative, aimed at getting more people active.

Enhanced Services Manager at the Maden Centre Sue Hopkinson says: “One of our priorities is obesity, which

is rising in our area. By linking with private providers like Dansworks we can not only offer opportunities for activity and exercise, but also raise awareness about things like healthy eating.”

Classes at Dansworks will include Baby Massage, DansTots, Tatty Bumpkin, Jiggle & Wiggle & Pre-School Dance. Social sessions after the classes will focus on a variety of themes, including portion size and healthy eating. For example, DansTots is a parent and toddler dance session, costing £1.50 per child.

To encourage more adults to get active, Dansworks have introduced £3 classes or £15 monthly passes, offering access to all their adult sessions, whilst children can be booked into a crèche at the Maden Centre for £1. Sue says: “If we encourage parents to be more active and eat better, it will rub off on children, thus improving their health and wellbeing.”

For more information on classes visit www.dansworks.co.uk or www.madencentre.org.uk or call Dansworks: 01706 559671. Maden Centre: 01706 871740.

On Sunday 7 July 2013, for one day only, Whitworth will be by the

seaside. The annual Family Fun Day at the

Riverside is organised by the Whitworth Tourism and Leisure Committee and, despite being just about as far inland as you could hope to be in England, this year’s event will have a distinctly coastal feel to it.

All the fun of a day at the beach will be available on the Riverside car park. Attractions will include funfair rides such as swing-boats and trampolines, there will be candy floss and ice cream, and there will also be a number of seaside-themed competitions with prizes for the bonniest baby, knobbliest knees and the most glamorous granny. Whitworth’s famous Vale and Healey Band will be on hand to play lots of traditional seaside tunes, and there will be fun in the water with the Funtastic Inflatables – there’ll

even be sand for the kids to play in.Councillor David Chorlton, chair

of the Whitworth Tourism and Leisure Committee, says: “The Family Fun Day has been a staple event in the Whitworth calendar for four years now, and the Committee was keen to give it a unique feel in 2013. The Committee members leading on this particular event have excelled themselves and it should be a fantastic day. We can’t guarantee the weather but we can guarantee fun seaside-themed activities for all the family.”

So get some knots in your hanky, grab your sun cream and head for ‘the beach’. The ‘Whitworth By The Sea’ Family Fun Day takes place on Sunday 7 July, 12 noon until 4pm, on the Riverside (Civic Hall) car park, Whitworth, OL12 8DP. Entry is a nominal 1p, with small charges for some rides. For more information, please contact the Riverside on 01706 854130.

‘Beside the Seaside’

This is the last event to be sponsored by Community Spaces from the grants awarded to the Horticultural Society to rejuvenate the gardens. They especially want the Whitworth community to utilise and enjoy the new gardens, and an area was raised and paved for the Band’s use; the gardens should also be in full bloom by then.

At similar events held in London every summer, audiences bring deck chairs and blankets to sit on whilst they are entertained, and the Society hopes that you will

follow this tradition here in Whitworth - give it a try!

The event is free of charge and all are welcome - light refreshments will be served at the Riverside to complete the event, the bar will be open and there will be Bucks Fizz available for those who would prefer something special to end an enjoyable afternoon, provided at a reasonable

cost. There is also provision for the whole event to take place at Riverside if the sun isn’t shining!

For more details, please contact Anita Farrow on 01706 853768.

The Whitworth And Healey Horticultural Society, in conjunction with the Whitworth Vale and Healey Youth Band, will present

a ‘Proms in the Park’ concert in the Memorial Park, Facit, on Sunday 21 July at 2pm.

Fun4Families... for Food!

This year Fun4Families are delighted to be working in partnership with the

Raft Foundation Project, Rossendale’s local Food Bank.

Instead of charging the £1.00 per child per session fee, as in previous years, we are encouraging families attending the organised events to donate one food item per child, so the £1.00 fee will be waived in favour of the food donation. Raft has a shopping list, to give you some ideas of what to bring along, but all donations will be gratefully received.

Not only will your youngsters have a great time at one of our fun-filled sessions, but you will be giving vital help to Rossendale families in need. What better reason do you need to bring your family along?

Booking is essential as places are limited and our sessions are very popular.

I have already written about the lovely walks we have done around the village of Downham and Beacon Fells Country Park and I was going to tell you about the pretty trek we did around Great Mitton and the River Ribble (starting with lunch at the award winning Three Fishes Inn) but have decided not to just confine my writing of an Out and About to that one lovely afternoon. Instead I wanted to encourage families of Rossendale to visit The Forest of Bowland for lots of outings over the long summer break that’s soon to be upon us. Even more so since there is to be a new Bowland Rambler Bus service starting every Sunday and Bank holiday throughout the summer direct from Accrington or Burnley, making the area accessible for more of us to enjoy.

The Forest of Bowland offers some of the most beautiful and dramatic landscapes to view. It is also well-noted for its wildlife, including several protected bird species. The area is well-known for its scenic walks, indeed by some it’s considered a walker’s paradise. If you aren’t, what about enjoying more family-friendly activities such as visiting farm parks or display gardens, for example Bowland Wild Boar Park. It’s a place that youngsters

love to go, where they are encouraged to feed the animals, including deer, llamas and goats. Or Cobble Hey Farm & Gardens at Garstang (this one’s on our to-do list), a must (I believe) for those that love their plants and home-made cakes.

Or maybe you fancy a walk around a sculpture trail or nature trail? The Pendle Sculpture Trail at Aitken Wood, Barley has been created by four artists to mark the 400th anniversary of the Pendle Witch Trials. The story is told through the trail in Aitken Wood, beneath Pendle Hill, and features sculptures made out of stone, wood, and metal. (This one’s our list too!) Closer to home, only a mile from Clitheroe, the Ribble Valley Sculpture Trail runs through a park (always an important point for children) and nature reserve. Beacon Fells Country Park I have written about before and I would definitely go again- the views along the walk were amazing.

Am I not mentioning tea rooms enough? Well, the lovely, picturesque villages in Bowland have plenty of them all waiting to be discovered. Most of the villages have good facilities, including parking, toilets (another important point to mention), playgrounds, beautiful picnic spots, even a village green to feed the ducks! A few to try could

include, Barley, Chipping, Sawley and Waddington. Not all in Bowland, I know, but not far away.

A series of push-chair and family friendly walks have also been developed and it’s been a few of these that we have been trying out from time to time; they can be up to 3 miles long, perfect for those shorter strides!

There are also a number family events taking part throughout the summer. Why not try visiting an Agriculture show? The Garstang Show is Saturday 3rd August and The Chipping Show is 24th August. I have never been to one; maybe I should add one onto the list of places to visit too!

For us, the Forest of Bowland is a place that offers so much and that’s what makes it a perfect place to spend a summer’s Sunday walking, browsing or sightseeing. Our ‘Places to Go’ list is growing: what about starting yours before the summer holidays get here and the all-too-few sunny days are gone!

Information about the Bowland Rambler Bus, downloadable walking guides, cycling routes, family events and places of interest, can all be obtained from the Forest of Bowland website: (www.forestofbowland.com).

Last summer we acquired walking boots for our two older children in an attempt to get them out and about, walking along muddy footpaths, scrabbling over stiles with a bit

of basic map reading thrown in for good measure. It worked reasonably well….. when the weather was forgiving. This year it’s walking boots for all, even though I am mindful of little legs and limited walking power!

Page 21: The Scallywag - Summer 2013

As I write this the leaves have finally appeared on the trees, the sun is

shining, I can smell cut grass through the window and I am beginning to feel the lift that summer brings.

I am hoping that as you read this, summer has well and truly arrived and the urge to get out in the fresh air has surfaced.

But why go outside at all?Children are born with huge amounts

of energy and the urge to release it, often noisily! Being in a wide, open space is many children’s idea of heaven. The first thing they want to do when they enter a vast expanse of grass is let go of your hand and run. It may be a lot of effort for us but children need that opportunity to get out, to stimulate not only their bodies through movement, but also their minds. AND whether we like it or not, we need to get moving too and somehow charging around after a ball or playing chase seems far les effort than a visit to the gym!

So how can being outside stimulate our children’s minds? Well, nature has a wonderful way of providing props for imaginary play. On a walk this week, my daughter Hannah made a simple stick into a horse, sword for fighting dragons and a fairy’s magic wand… why did I spend any money last Christmas? This pretend play is hugely important as a precursor to reading and writing skills, as they understand that things can be

symbols that represent something else. It sparks their imaginations in a way no other kind of play can.

Some children simply need to be outside and actually learn most effectively by being physically active. Some find themselves in trouble as they can’t sit still for long enough or keep quiet when appropriate. These children especially need that chance to let off steam. Besides, surely it’s worth it when we have tired them out ready for a good nights sleep?

Children need a taste of freedom in this world where we are seemingly unable to take any risks:- ‘WARNING, this coffee may be hot!’ So instead of donning a fluorescent jacket and hardhat, I believe we need to allow children to explore the capacity of their own bodies, to test themselves at their own rate. This means taking risks – them and us. We have to face that there are some dangers we must inform our children about and others that they must find out about for themselves. So whilst I am not suggesting we let children discover the risks of running across a main road, we may let them climb higher on a climbing frame or skid on the ice.

This is perhaps the hardest part of being a parent – letting our children face risks themselves. But we all have to fall sometimes. If we never fall, how will we learn to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and start all over again? How will children learn something new if we never allow them to try?

Two things have inspired me to write

this. One was a poster I saw on a course I attended recently as a Registered Childminder. It was so refreshing to read, it really stuck in my mind. It stated, ‘Children want and need to take risks’. The other was a Sure Start leaflet entitled ‘Going out to play and learn’. There too, it talks about ‘Risk and Challenge’ and how by pushing themselves and trying out new things with their body, children ‘develop the confidence to use it well and to believe in their own decisions’. Mummy and Daddy will not always be there to guide their children – much as we may like to be. If we don’t allow our children the chance to make their own decisions, and perhaps mistakes at an early age, how will they develop the confidence or self-belief to do it as they grow?

My dad unfortunately had to raise my younger sister and me on his own through our teenage years, as my mum died of cancer when we were young. I have always felt that if I could be half the parent my dad was, I would be happy knowing that I had done well. I can’t put my finger on exactly what it was – if I could, I’d have written a series of best selling books! Thinking back though, he never gave me his advice, not even when I asked for it. He would somehow guide my thinking so that I thought I had come to the decision all by myself. He has always allowed me the room to make mistakes but has always been there to scoop me up afterwards – and he still is.He took the biggest risk – allowing me to take my own.

The Forbidden Corner started in 1979 as a small wood of fir trees. In 1989 Mr C R Armstrong CMG, OBE decided to build a walled garden with the help of a friend. He then decided to add a grotto. This grotto became a twenty five foot deep hole which prompted further channel digging and excavation. In 1992 a pyramid of molten glass was made and a maze created in the planted garden. The plan was originally to keep this work as a private folly for the exclusive use of friends and family but due to media and public demand it was subsequently opened to the public.

The result is a unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises set in a four acre garden with countless paths and passageways full of extraordinary statues.

Your visit starts at the Face Tower where you walk through an enormous mouth complete with burping sound effects and huge tongue. As you emerge from the tower and look back it is as if you have come out under a dinosaur’s tail. You are then free to roam around

the estate spotting the many weird and wonderful sights on the photosheet you are given on admission. There is no set route around the estate – there can’t be with so many twisting paths and tunnels. Some passageways lead to staircases, some to underground tunnels, some to chambers with a choice of doors for you to choose from.

One of the enjoyably frustrating aspects of this place is that as you move around you can see different areas or doorways but it is a major challenge to try to get to them. At one point Lily, Eliza and I had squeezed down a narrow tunnel that ended with a hole that we could just wriggle through. Admittedly, I was hauling myself through sideways whilst lying on the ground – most ungainly – but, determined not to admit defeat and also lose the children, I made it. However we soon realised that any grown man with reasonably sized shoulders wouldn’t get through and so we lost Pete and it took us about half an hour before we worked out how to find our way back to where he was.

The Forbidden Corner is full of surprises. For example, one moment we were on a garden path near a fountain then went through a doorway and found ourselves on a red carpeted staircase descending into a dark chamber with spooky figures and evil looking statues surrounding us.

The detail and effects are absolutely amazing. I have never visited a place like this before and would love to go back. It is definitely a place to visit on a fine day wearing wellies because you do get wet by all the hidden jets that suddenly squirt at you. There is a lovely cafe serving a wide range of food suitable for all ages and of course, a gift shop. Admission is £11 per adult and £9 for children aged 4 – 15. You must book your visit before you go and you are given an entry time which you must stick to. There is also accommodation available on the estate. I would recommend looking at the website to get a real flavour of the unusual and imaginative sights on offer as, for once, I am struggling to find enough descriptive words to do this place justice.

We had a great day and would thoroughly recommend it for all ages. The only negative is you couldn’t possibly do it with a pushchair, wheelchair or with any sort of mobility issues.

For over 100 years the Cross family have been butchers and farmers in the Rossendale area.

Phil Cross believes that the long-standing success of Cross Meats is attributable to them committing themselves to supplying own-reared and local food to local people, with a focus on taste and traceability, and at the same time helping to boost our local Rossendale economy and community.

Phil says “We pride ourselves on being traditional butchers; we ensure that all our customers, old and new, are served with top quality, own-reared, value-for-money meat products.”

The Cross farm consists of extensive beef and sheep stock and the beautifully tasty, succulent meats that they produce are available on their stalls at Rawtenstall, Bacup and Shaw markets. The flavour-fresh farm produce comes straight to you-with no middle-man. But Cross Meats are much more than traditional butchers- alongside their own beef and lamb they also sell an ever-expanding range of other local produce such as pies, sausages, home cured and smoked hams, cheese, eggs, preserves and beef dripping! Credit and debit card payment is welcome.

Famous for his banter, Phil invites you to come along for a chat, and savour the unique Cross Meats shopping experience today!

So why not head to one of our local libraries at the beginning of the long summer holiday and enrol to receive your membership pack. It’s completely free and anybody can take part!

Children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the long summer holidays. The annual Summer Reading Challenge helps gets three quarters of a million children into libraries to keep up their

reading skills and confidence, encouraging children aged 4 to 11 to read six books during the long summer holiday.

The theme for the 2013 Summer Reading Challenge is Creepy House, illustrated by award winning Chris Riddell. There’s a spine-tingling adventure waiting for children

when they take part. They can join our adventurers as they explore the Creepy House, simply by reading six books from the library. They can discover the secrets of Creepy House and meet some of the hair-

raising residents! Are the children of Rossendale brave enough to explore The Awful Upstairs, The Frightful First Floor and The Sinister Cellar?

The Creepy House theme, for 2013, ties into publishing trends for books that thrill children without being too scary. It is also a theme

which will appeal to a wide age range and to both genders. Children can read whatever they like - fact books, joke books, picture books, audio books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library. Every time a child finishes a book they get stickers and rewards and there’s a certificate for everyone that finishes.

The Summer Reading Challenge is run across the UK public library network by The Reading Agency, the independent charity running creative programmes which help people feel inspired and confident about reading. The Challenge is supported by children’s book publishers and is open to all children, who can sign up for free at their local public library. It is designed for all reading abilities.

This year, as in previous years, The Reading Agency has working with the RNIB to create supersize materials with

extra-large print for children who are visually impaired, or children who have

visually impaired parents/carers. There are accompanying information sheets about the Challenge in Braille and a certificate

in Braille. Ask at your library about these resources.

The RNIB also loans books in Braille, giant print (24 point type) and audio, for children and young people aged five upwards. Books are delivered by post free of charge and children can borrow six books at a time. A themed book list for the Summer

Reading Challenge will also be available from RNIB to help blind and partially-sighted children complete the Challenge. It is quick and easy to join the library – [email protected] or call

direct on 0161 355 2061.

Measles isn’t trivial. It’s a very infectious, nasty illness which, in rare cases, can be fatal. About one in five children with measles experiences complications such as ear infections, diarrhoea and vomiting, pneumonia, meningitis, and eye disorders. One in 10 children with measles ends up in hospital. There is no treatment for measles. Vaccination is the only way of preventing it.

It’s an illness that spreads very easily. In fact, it’s one of the most infectious diseases known. You can catch measles if you spend just 15 minutes with someone who has the disease.

What can surprise people is that if adults get measles, they are likely to become more ill than children and for a longer period of time. Someone with measles generally has to spend five days in bed and be off work for 10 days. They are also more prone to more illness-related complications than children.

Rossendale may be a fair distance from Wales; however, outbreaks of measles can happen anywhere at any time, so it’s important that your children are up-to-date with their MMR and other childhood vaccinations. If your child has already had two doses of MMR vaccine, you don’t need to worry. Similarly if your child had their

first dose of MMR as a baby but they are not yet old enough to have received their second dose, this counts as them being up to date and there is no need to have the second MMR dose earlier than scheduled. However, if your child is school aged and has only had one MMR dose, or not been vaccinated at all, they really should be vaccinated as soon as possible.

It’s never too late for your children (or yourself) to ‘catch up’ with MMR vaccination if they missed it earlier. Children up to the age of 18 and adults without immunity should have a catch-up MMR vaccination. Babies under six months usually have some antibodies to measles already in their system, passed on from their mum at the time of birth, which may give them some protection for the first few months. But this residual immunity also interferes with their response to the MMR vaccine.

So, the best approach for children under six months is to try to avoid them having any contact with measles.

MMR vaccination is usually given as a first dose around the age of 13 months and then again as a ‘booster’ jab before school at age three to five. If your child has already had the vaccine it should be recorded in their medical notes and in their personal health record (the `Red

Book`). Ask your GP or Health Visitor if you’re not sure. The MMR vaccination is available to adults and children free on the NHS.

To confirm you need two doses of MMR to be fully protected. The first dose of the MMR jab protects 90% of those who receive it, and the second dose tops this up to 99% protection. Almost all of the children in Wales who have caught measles were either completely unvaccinated or only partially vaccinated.

To arrange a vaccination call your local GP practice and make an appointment for an MMR jab. It involves two doses which can be given just a month apart to protect as quickly as possible. If you aren’t registered with a GP, find the nearest doctor’s surgery who will give your family the jabs.

Remember - It’s not just children who can benefit from MMR vaccination. Adults who are unsure whether they’ve had measles or been vaccinated, particularly if they’re carers or work with children, can have the MMR vaccine on the NHS from their GP. Bear in mind that most adults born before 1970 are likely to be immune because they have probably been exposed to measles already.

Are YOU and your child protected?

A measles outbreak in Wales is a reminder of the importance of MMR vaccination. It’s never too late to get your children (or yourself) vaccinated against this

dangerous illness. If your children haven’t yet had the MMR vaccination, don’t delay. There have been over 800 confirmed cases of measles in Swansea and the outbreak shows no sign of slowing down.
