During the week they clean their rooms, take out the garbage and complete homework assignments. On theweekends, however, they rock stages from Amarillo to Dallas. “I couldn’t imagine what we’d be doing if we werenot in a band,” said bassist Jon Klause of Klause, an Amarillo heavy metal band.

The Klause brothers—Stevie, 13, Josh, 14, and Jon, 15—had beenplaying together for a while when their dad opted to join in. “He’spretty much the new guy,” Jon Klause said. Steve Klause came homefrom work about two years ago and discovered his boys playing anold Pantera song he hadn’t heard in years. “It was my favorite band,”he said. “When I was about 18, me and my buddies just wore thatcassette out. There were cassettes back then.”

At that point, Steve Klause wanted to throw his vocals in the mix. “Idecided I was going to try and sing for them, and I bought a PA andwe decided we were going to do our first song together as a band,” hesaid. That song was Pantera’s “Cowboys From Hell.” “It was awful,”Steve Klause said with all three of his sons in agreement.

But the group did not give up. After kicking around a few band names, the four-piece decided to stick with Klause. In July 2008, a friend invited the group to play at a Wal-Mart employeeparty. More than 50 shows later, they have performed at local barsand venues and branched out to other cities such as Lubbock, Pampaand Dallas. “My favorite memory was going to Pampa because it washuge,” said guitarist Stevie Klause. “I love to see people mosh. It givesme a really warm heart.”

Klause performs most often at the War Legion Underground in Amarillo, located at 519 S.E. 10th Ave. The bandcalls the venue their second home. Eric Turley, War Legion owner, refers to Klause as “the biggest little band inAmarillo.” Turley said he did not know what to think of the band until the first time he heard them play. “They’re thereal deal,” Turley said. “I got to host one of their first club shows in Amarillo, so that kind of always meantsomething to me. And I see them as a serious talent other than just a couple of kids with a gimmick. They are trulytalented, and they’re my little guys, man. I think they could do something with the whole thing.”

Since their formation, Steve Klause said the band set their focus on playing in Dallas because one of their favoritemetal magazines, Harder Beat, was based out of the city. “We’d been reading that for years, so when we startedthe band we put a target on Dallas,” Steve Klause said. “Their last issue was like the next month.”

Still, Klause persevered and their dream came true in August whenthey were invited to play at one of the pre-parties for the fifthannual Ride For Dime event. Ride For Dime is a charitableorganization that memorializes “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, theformer guitarist for heavy metal bands Pantera and Damage Plan.Klause helped raise $3,500, which was donated to a few ofAbbott’s favorite charities. “It was the craziest party you couldever imagine,” Steve Klause said. “We were right up front.Dimebag’s wife gave my kids a hug, and she offered us themain stage next year.”

Klause thinks of Abbott as a heavy metal hero and ends everyshow with a 15-minute-long Pantera medley. “That’s my favoritepart of the night, every night,” said drummer Josh Klause, who

banged on a trash can in his back yard for more than a year before hisdad bought him a drum set.

Jon Klause said he vividly remembers the moment he found out Abbott had been shot in 2004 at an Ohio nightclubduring a performance. “It was the 9-11 of heavy metal, easily,” Jon Klause said. “We finish every show withPantera, and I hope we always will.”

Steve Klause said he and his sons relate to Abbott because he was a down-to-earth person. “When he metsomebody back stage, he made them feel like they were his best friend,” Steve Klause said. “We definitely don’ttake ourselves seriously. It’s kind of hard to be first class when you’re white trash, and that’s another thing we takefrom him.”

Klause also recycles the phrase “Getcha’ Pull,” a famous Abbott slogan. To them, the words can mean “anythingand everything,” from advancing musically to letting it all hang out.Klause is “getting their pull” by playing all the shows they can. “We turn hand shakes into relationships, and that’show you get gigs,” Steve Klause said. “Now we get to go to Dallas and hang out with (Abbott’s) friends andbuddies.”

Turley said he has watched Klause’s audience grow since they started doing shows last year. “Every body’s immediatelytaken by them,” Turley said. “They definitely have a fan base. A lot of people like them. I appreciate the talent theyhave.”Along with praise, however, the group’s success has generated criticism. “Every once in a while we’ll get therandom nimrod on the Web site who tells us I shouldn’t be exposing our kids to this,” Steve Klause said. “What canyou do? These are my kids. A lot of parents would cringe about taking their kids to a bar, but the way I see it Iguess the juice is worth the squeeze.”

Steve Klause said his sons take on bar environments with maturity. “I’ve been real proud about how they’vehandled it,” he said. “They’ve never tried to sneak a drink, and they’re teenagers.”

Steve Klause said he and his wife make parenting their top priority. “I’m a parent first and singer second,” Stevecontinued on pg. 7A...

If you live in the Texas Panhandle or surroundingareas you have probably heard of the BusterBledsoe Band. They have been playing togetherfor about 3 years now. The band consist of 4 mem-bers, Buster Bledsoe is the lead singer and rhythmguitarist, Geoff McCaslin is their lead guitarist,Doug Ecker is on the drums and Rowdy Rider is lead rhythm and harmonyvocalist. Together this band brings a whole new experience to the Pan-handle.

“This dream has been a long time in the making!”says Buster. He has been singing since he was 16.He started at Hoots Pub in Amarillo on amateur nightsinging ‘You look So Good in Love’ and ‘The Cow-boy Rides Away’ with singer/songwriter James Davisplaying the guitar. From there he started performingat the Big Texan Steak Ranch Opry.

He was just a solo act until his long time high schoolfriend Justin Mays came back to Amarillo after be-ing gone with the Navy for 5 years. Justin had beenstationed out of Virgina Beach,

Virgina and had a successful solo career writing songsand playing Acoustic Rock. Upon his return to the TexasPanhandle, he began teaching Buster how to play the gui-tar. Justin has now been deployed to Iraq and is missedgreatly!

As for their drummer Doug Ecker, Buster has known Dougsince high school. They hung out sporatically and be-came great friends. Doug joined the Army NationalGuard, and has returned to A-Town! Doug has playedwith a couple of garage bands and is doing awesome!

Geoffery McCaslin is from Canyon, among other placesand has a blues and rock background. He has played in

The Buster Bledsoe Band

a couple of bands and has also done studio work. He has added a wholenew dimension to the band!

Then there is Rowdy Rider who is their lead rhythm- harmony vocalist and then Shawn White is thesound specialist. These guys are the newest addi-tion to the band.

The Buster Bledsoe Band plays a show almost ev-ery weekend. Traveling all over, to places such asLiberal Kansas, San Angelo, Midland, Borger,Portales NM, and Guymon OK. You can also seethem around Amarillo at several venues such asLowery’s Saloon and Dance Hall, Ho ots Pub, Golden Light Cantina, Round-ers, and The Western Horseman. Recently they played at the XIT Rodeo andthey have been asked to come back and play for them next year.

They also perform at private shows and charity functions. Make a WishChili cook-off HOG group and Eveline Rivers toy run just to name a few. They are usually approached and asked to play at these kinds of events.

They don’t really have a manager,“I am the one that does all of that stuff”says Buster.

Aside from the what they do with the band you can also find these guysaround town living their lives like everyone else. Buster is in food sales forSysco foods of West TX. Geoff is a math teacher. Doug works for GarysHeating and Air. Rowdy is at Norris Audio/Video and Shawn works at theVA.

All of the members of the band agree that their main goal as a whole wouldbe to make enough money with their music to be able to quit their jobs andfocus on their dreams.

Coors of Amarillo is their main sponsor and they are very thankful for theirsupport. “We would like to thank our families and friends f or theirsupport and thanks to everyone who has came out to support our music! We couldn’t do it without you!” The Buster Bledsoe Band.

You can go online and check out some of their music that they have postedon their myspace at www.myspace.com/busterbledsoeband.

Klause said. “We tell them that if you want to do this, it’s not a given. It’s aprivilege to be up here doing this. All we ask for is good grades and decentbehavior.” Steve Klause describes his wife as the “grounding rod” to theband. “She’s our biggest fan,” he said. “She’s supportive, but at the sametime if we mess up she will put wrath on our world,” Jon Klause said.

Another criticism the band faces is being labeled a “novelty act” by somespectators. “They say once we grow up we’re nothing,” Stevie Klause said.“Novelty act bothers me more than them criticizing my parenting becausethey don’t know me,” Steve Klause said. “They’re criticizing not only ourmusic but how serious we are about it, because we take it very serious andthis isn’t going to stop when they’re grown up.”

The Klause brothers have a natural connection when they play together,Steve Klause said. “It’s a trip because all three of them just look at eachother,” he said. “Even a look ... Josh is a little slow on the tempo and Jonwill give him a look. It’s that brother thing. It’s cool.”

Steve Klause enjoys the musical journey he shares with his sons. “Pride’s nota big enough word,” he said. “I’m up there living my dream with them, so it’slike a dream within a dream. So I’m not only having my cake but eating it,too.”

Stevie, Jon and Josh said they are proud of their dad as well. “He’s probablythe best singer for us,” Josh Klause said. “Without him we wouldn’t be goingto Dallas. Even if he ends up not being the singer, he’ll be involved. I can’tsee him not being in the band.”

Klause’s current focus is adding more songs to their 7 original compositions. They also hope to record a demo or self-produced CD in the near future.Another goal is taking their act on the road. “We want to tour, man, wewant to tour,” Steve Klause said. “We want the same thing that any bandwants. We’re no different. We want it, too.”Other musical influences of Klause are Slipknot, Stone Sour and DamagePlan. Stay up to date with show dates and the group’s blog by visitingMySpace.com/klauseband72.

Steve Klause said he and and his sons hope to work their way to the top.“We’re going to keep kicking around town doing what we’re doing becausewe have fun and that’s the bottom line,” he said. “The worst case scenario isthat we have fun, and that’s pretty good.”

Everywhere you look around Amarillo, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christ-mas. Especially at Red Door Antiques.

Located at 2612 Wolflin Avenue, the store’s brightred door is eye catching, and inside that doorlies a whole wonderland of Christmas. Almost asif you are stepping into Santa’s workshop.

Owner Sam Pruitt has been in business since 1993,and the store was originally located on SixthStreet. Since moving to their present location, many of their long-time customers have remainedloyal to the store, and many more new customersmake frequent return visits.

The Red Door carries antique furniture, gifts, deco-rations, Christmas ornaments, figurines, wreaths garlands and centerpieces,as well as needle point pillows and other items such as Estate jewelry fromprivate collections.

This time of the year, it’s all Christmas, all the time, and is their busiest timeof the year as well.

A Red Door Christmas! The furniture is all antique, dating back to the mid-1700s and 1800s, and aspart of the customer service, Sam will do repairs on all furniture they sell.Their largest piece of furniture was a 9’ by 7’ cabinet, and they also carryHoward’s Furniture products such as furniture wax and oils to keep thoseantiques in good condition.

The most popular items are the Christmasarrangements, made in the traditionalcolours of red, green and gold, and cap-tures the feel of old-fashioned Christmascards. Unique items such as riding boots, violin cases, violins, trombones and an oldFrench horn have been used in the arrange-ments, and add a personal touch to eachpiece. Arrangements are all done by hand, and can be made for homes or businesses.

In one room, a near-life-sized giraffe looksout from a corner, his head almost touch-ing the ceiling above him. Next to the gi-raffe, is a print of two lions, and at his feet, lepoard print pillows, giving a safari atmo-sphere to the Christmas-decorations around them. In yet another room, youwill find an antique bed, cradle and red-upholstered sofa. The sofa is

decorated with needle-point pillowsin different sizes, with designs rang-ing from dogs to quotes stitchedupon them. Over the bed is a beau-tiful print of ballerinas practicing ina studio, and an antique lamp sitsbeside the sofa.

Eight employees make up the staff, including Camille Cargil, who worksduring the holidays, and SidneyKoenig, and they are always readywith a warm welcome and friendly

smile when greeting customers.

Ask people around you what some of their favorite smells are, and there’s agood chance someone will mention fresh-baked bread. (Frank’s Bakery, at1923 S. Western Street in Amarillo is just the place to go to find many differ-ent kinds of fresh bread, pastries, desserts and more.

Owned by Francois Gauclain and managed by his daughter, Celine, Frank’sBakery has been in business for ten years. Frank, born and raised in France, has been baking since he was fourteen years old, so he’s got 52 years ofexperience in the fine art of hand made, home-made goodness.

Walk into the bakery, and you will see all sorts of delicious looking breads

Frank’s Bakery

Christmas ornaments range from traditional to themes, to whimsical, andone tree is decorated to look like a huge SantaClaus, with western boots at the bottom, and atopper made to look like St. Nick’s head andupper torso. Santa is twirling a lasso, and orna-ments in the shape of horse shoes and stars hangfrom the branches. Near the front entrance, anelf dressed in a red jumper sits happily on anold-fashioned rocking horse, and Christmas mu-sic plays softly in the background. All the pic-tures, decorations, arrangements, jewelry andwreaths are for sale, and Sam or one of the em-ployees will make sure you enjoy your shoppingexperience at The Red Door.

Their hours are Monday through Friday, 10 am to 5:30 pm. The phonenumber is 806.352.4800. (Be sure and stop in this Christmas season andfeel free to browse through the many delightful things in the shop. You’resure to find something that you can’t leave without.

on the counter, and the shelves behind it. There are also plenty of pastriesand meringue creations in the bakery case.

Some of the breads Frank’s offers are Frenchbread, baguettes, Rosemary bread, KalamataOlive, made with the best olives in the world, and tomato bread. (The pastries includeeclairs, creme brulee, and also Paris Brest, which is akin to a creme puff, and named af-ter a city on the North end of Britain, just Westof France. Raspberry Mousse, made with rasp-berries, creme, and a little bit of cake on thebottom, is also offered, as are fruit pastrieswith seasonal fruits such as kiwi, pineapple, and peach.

Frank’s also offers breakfast and on the menu, you will find croissant with ham and cheese, spinach, or sausage and cheeseavailable. Soft drinks, coffee, cappuccino, and hot chocolate are the drinkchoices, and you can either dine in, or take your order with you to enjoy athome or at the office.

For lunch, the bakery, with a seating capacity ofapproximately 30, offers Quiche Lorraine, SpinachQuiche, ham and cheese Bechamel. They serve be-tween 40-60 lunches a day, and their cozy atmo-sphere makes for a pleasant dining experience.Their lunch hours are 11:00 am to 1:30 pm.
