1. Position Title: Outdoor Education Teacher
2. Role Purpose: Support the strategic directions of The Scots College through delivery of
effective outdoor education programs, fostering an inclusive and
challenging learning environment and engaging with the school
community within and beyond the classroom.
3. Location: Glengarry Year 9 Outdoor Education Campus – Kangaroo Valley
(Southern Highlands – NSW)
4. Responsible To: • Director of Glengarry, Assistant Director of Glengarry, Coordinator of
Outdoor Education, Head of Curriculum
• Ultimately the Principal
5. Principal Relationships:
Principal, Director of Glengarry, Assistant Director of Glengarry, Deans of
Faculty, Academic Administrator, T-12 Directors, Heads of Campus,
Preparatory Campus Leaders, Year Level Coordinators, Head of
Department, Students, Parents/Carers

Hike Program Administration
• Lead and instruct a range of activities within the hike
program as specified by the Outdoor Education
Coordinator.
• Lead overnight hikes once or twice a week.
• Coordinate transport and drivers
• Liaise with catering department on menu type and food
packaging for each hike cycle
• Assist with the preparation & delivery of teaching
materials for weekly hike briefings for staff & students.
• Assist with maintenance of outdoor equipment and
facilities.
• Assist with the planning and logistics of the hike
program for which you are responsible each week.
• Be a part of a team that coordinates and facilitates 2 x
3 day Option Hike, 3 day Solo Hike and 6 day long
journey home each semester.

Communication • Inform Outdoor Education Coordinator of relevant
outdoor issues that may arise from their leadership
role in the field or classroom.
• Notify all Glengarry staff of administrative or safety
matters relating to the Outdoor Education Program
within your area of responsibility.
• Communicate with parents on Outdoor Education
issues (by phone, e-mail or written correspondence),
after consultation with Outdoor Education Coordinator,
Dorm Tutor and Director of Glengarry.
• Quality and timeliness of

Risk Management • Assist with implementation & monitoring of Risk
Management policies & procedures.
• Conduct on-going risk appraisals of hike program.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of the risk management
procedures within the Outdoor Program.
• Conduct safety audits, through the Glengarry Risk
Management Committee and weekly outdoor
education team meetings.
• Develop & maintain Glengarry wide incident database.
• Risk register up to date

Make recommendations in conjunction with the
outdoor education coordinator on policy changes.
• Review and update existing risk management
documentation in conjunction with the Outdoor
Education Coordinator.
• Develop in conjunction with the Outdoor Education
Coordinator new risk management documents to
address identified areas of need. e.g. new activities
such as Long Journey Home.
Assessment & Reporting
• Mark, and write examinations and reports on student
performance in the Outdoor Program.
• Lodge and review reports on Scots Pipeline (Student
Profile) where appropriate.
• Develop and maintain student records of field
performance during the outdoor education program.
• Adhere to College assessment and reporting policies
and guidelines.
• Utilise feedback to continually improve assessment
practices.
• Develop, select and use informal and formal,
diagnostic, formative and summative assessment
strategies to assess student learning.
• Prepare timely and meaningful feedback and reports
and notifications to students and parents.
• Participate in moderation activities to support
consistent and comparable judgements of student
learning.
• Maintain clear records pertaining to student progress
and assessment.

Policy Implementation
• Assist with implementation and monitoring of Risk
Management policies and procedures.
• Assist with development and implementation of
Policies related to the Outdoor Program.
• Review relevant policies and assist the Outdoor
Education Coordinator in maintaining changes on the
Glengarry Website.
• Ensure students’ wellbeing and safety within the
school by implementing school, curriculum and
legislative requirements.
• Monitor and minimise risk through implementation of
College Risk management procedures.
• Adherence to policy,

• Support the Christian ethos of the College.
• Comply with relevant legislative requirements, codes
of ethics and conduct established by regulatory
authorities, systems and the College.
Staff Induction
• Contribute to the staff induction program by providing
information on the Outdoor Education Program at
Glengarry; Safety and Emergency Procedures in an
Outdoor Setting and other policies related to Outdoor
Education.
• Assist with the preparation (and regular up-date) of a
staff manual related to the Outdoor Program.
• Quality of information

Related Duties • Participate in the run / ride program during scheduled
work week.
• Participate in College functions including Speech
nights and other functions as required.
• Carry out student supervisory duties as required e.g.
ground duty, exam supervision.
• Communicate and work collaboratively with
colleagues, parents and caregivers.
• Participate in night time Dorm Supervision and
morning wake ups.

Professional Development
• Reflect on own practice and set and implement

Professional Performance Review
• The appointed Teacher will participate in the annual
Performance Review Programme.

Probationary Period • A six-month probationary period will be served by the
employee, during which time the employee or
employer can decide to conclude the employment.
• Serve a 6-month period of
probation.
8. Selection Criteria
Essential Selection Criteria: Desirable to have:
• Experience in developing and leading best
practice outdoor and life skills programs
• Outdoor Education qualifications in areas such
as hiking, climbing, canoeing, mountain biking,
etc.
• Experience in assessing risk of outdoor activities
to ensure student safety
• Light Rigid Licence or be willing to acquire (at
College expense)
• Senior First Aid Certificate
• Remote First Aid Certificate
• Current CPR certificate
• Royal Life Saving Bronze Medallion
• Ability to coordinate resources and people
• Ability to infuse the Christian ethos into
teaching practice
• Propensity to recognise the value and
uniqueness of each individual within the College
