PASTOR’S JOURNAL Dear Sugar Creek church family,

Happy 2017! A new year holds great promise and opportunity. It is a fresh start and, in many respects, a clean slate. The month of January is, in fact, named after the Roman god Janus, known as the "two-faced god." His two-faced nature symbolizes our opportunity at the beginning of a new year to look in two directions. We can look back on the year before while keeping our focus and fixing our gaze upon the new year ahead. This is a great blessing that God (not Janus!) gives us.

For me, it has been a momentous past twelve months. A new call, a new state, new living arrangements, new names and faces, a new drivers license, new climate, new schools for my children, new vocational circumstances for Christa, all make for a very different 2017 than how the previous year began. Most of these new realities have come about smoothly and have been a remarkable witness to God's faithfulness. It is a new reality for Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church, too. A change in pastoral leadership is a time of transition and change. Some parts of this change happen quickly and some are slower and more organic. A new year, gives us as a church the opportunity to look back on what has brought us to this

point while looking ahead at what the future holds. I am blessed to be in a long line of pastors called to serve this congregation. The building and even its location has changed over the twenty-plus decades of the church's life. The community surrounding the church has gone through changes and shifts reflecting the larger cultural shifts of our country and its own unique personality. The world into which Sugar Creek was born is vastly different with respect to advances in technology - communication, travel, medicine, computing, to name a few. Our past forms our identity and shapes our character. Our past, especially a past as noble and rich in faithfulness as this church's, is one to respect and draw from as we look into a new year. There is much to anticipate and look forward to as the new calendar rolls around. This is our opportunity to cast a vision for 2017 and to seek God's wisdom as we move into a new day. Worship, mission, family ministry, fellowship, Christian education are all significant and vital aspects of our church life. Casting a vision for where we are called to serve God through each of these is a big piece of what the new year holds for us. Small changes and more significant ones may both be a part of this process. That can be scary, but it needn't be. A new year and a new vision is faced prayerfully, thoughtfully and with the wisdom of what we bring from the past. And, most importantly, it is faced together, as God's people, who share the unity of Christ's love and redemption and who are united in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. May we all have a blessed and joy-filled 2017! Grace and peace,

Thank You Messages The EPPIC youth would like to thank the congregation for their amazing support for the families of Jubilee Christmas. We collected over 90 gifts that have blessed 8 families with 26 children. We had 27 youth who attended a wrapping party with the parents of these children on December 11 at the Miracle Makers located at Ruskin School. This is the first time ever that an organization that was providing Christmas gifts to families at Ruskin have helped wrap and connect with them in a personal way. Many of our youth also played Christmas games and created ornaments with the children while their parents were wrapping their gifts. It

was beautiful to witness we are blessed to be a blessing, and we thank you for helping our youth experience Christ’s love in a tangible way!

Dear Sugar Creek Family, My sincere thanks for the gifts of money and good wishes found in my mail box by members of the congrega-tion.

Thanks, Carole Misenko, organist

Dear SCPC, I’d like to thank everyone for their loving and generous gifts this Christmas. I am always blown away by your gracious thoughts, words, and actions! I love being a part of the staff of this church and appreciate each of you!

Blessings! Jessie Fleeman, Administrative Secretary

Dear Sugar Creek, On behalf of the Compassionate Friends I would like to thank you for allowing us to use your facility for our monthly meetings and our annual Candlelighting service. Losing a child is extremely difficult and you opening your doors for our meetings is so very much appreciated.

Merry Christmas & God Bless, Karen Brown and your friends at the Compassionate Friends

Dear Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church family, Christa and I thank you for your incredible generosity toward us and our family during the holiday season and throughout the first few months we have been in Ohio. Your warm welcome, hospitality and generosity have made this transition smoother and more gracious than we could ever have imagined. From the bottom of our hearts, we give thanks to you and to God for this church and it’s wonderful people.

Grace and peace, Pastor Brad

A Note from B&G With winter coming, please use the new (2013) entrance, not the ramp entrance. In the winter, we often close the double doors in the downstairs hallway by the furnace room. This slows the heat loss from the Fellowship Hall. We also close the kitchen door by the stairs. Ever wonder how Feedwire Road got its name? We thought it had to do with farming. But, according to life-long farmer and Sugar Creek member, Harold Tate, that is where the DC electric power line “Feed Wire” was for the end (terminus) of the Dayton trolley line.

B&G Trivia

Building and Grounds

Trivia Answers: 1. It goes east, off of Wilmington Pike, two miles south of the church, just north of I-675. 2. It was across the hall from the choir room. In the post-fire 1998 remodeling, the fireplace was removed.

High School Mission Trip Announcement On Sunday, January 22 beginning at 8 pm, Christian Nurture and Mission Outreach invite the parents of all current High school youth to attend an information meeting regarding the destination for the 2017 mission trip in June. Information on the location and details of the costs, deposits, etc. will be shared. We encourage parents and youth of all current high school age to attend this informational meeting, even if you are not sure of your

participation. Deposits will be accepted beginning on January 22, and will be accepted until all the reservations have been taken. We are excited about where God is calling us to serve as a youth group in 2017!

EPPIC Souper Bowl of Caring On Sunday, February 5, millions of Americans will tune in to the Super Bowl football game. There will be parties with abundant food and friendship. At the same time, there will be people worrying about staying warm, finding shelter and a warm meal. More than 20 years ago, the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group:

“Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those without a bowl of soup to eat.” Since that day through Souper Bowl of Caring, more than $100 million has been raised in food donations and funds for local charities across the country. Through this mission, young people learn what it’s like to make a positive difference in the world – as they collect food, raise money and volunteer to work in charities that provide shelter to the homeless, food to the hungry and compassion to those in need. The EPPIC youth will be asking for your generous donations on Super Bowl Sunday, following Worship. You will get a chance to “vote” with your money for a team in the Super Bowl event, or for your team that didn’t make it to the Super Bowl! The money collected will be donated to the Greenmont-Oak Park Food Pantry. We are also encouraging people to bring in canned and boxed goods which will be added to the food pantry at the Miracle Maker’s at Ruskin Elementary School. Let’s make a difference together! Note: Watch the bulletin for details on the Chili Cook-Off which will follow Worship on Feb 5!

EPPIC Super Bowl Party We are grateful to the Schultz Family for hosting the EPPIC Super Bowl Party on February 5, beginning at 5:30 pm! Please bring an appetizer to share, and dessert and beverages will be provided. The youth should be dropped off at the Schultz home (3850 Polo Trace Ct., Bellbrook) and picked up after the half-time show. Please RSVP to Wendy and see her with any questions and be sure to wear your team’s jersey!

Adult Ministry (Cont. ) New Member Class Beginning January 8, Pastor Brad will lead a 4-week class on the blessings and responsibilities of becoming a member of Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church. Monthly Film Festival ~ January 22 The next Film Festival will be on January 22 viewing the film Sully, featuring Tom Hanks in the true story of the world witnessing the ‘Miracle on the Hudson’. Captain Sullenberger glided his disable plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving all 155 people on board. But as the public was heralding him as a hero, there was an investigation that was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and career. Please join us at 2:00 pm in the Youth Room and enjoy snacks that will be provided. Please RSVP in the Cove if you are interested in participating.

Who wants to go bowling?!? Join us at Woodman Lanes, Kettering (Poelking Bowling) on Saturday, January 14, from 2-4 pm. The Deacons Are Ready to Help. The Key Deacon is the Deacon

who is primarily responsible for attending to the needs of the hospitalized members/friends of the congregation. Also, when the pastor is away, the Key Deacon (along with the on-call pastor) is available to assist with any other special needs or concerns. Key Deacon for January 2017 will be Marylou Somogyi (848-7740).

A Brief Update

Mortgage: Through mid-December, there were 2016 donations and other income applied to the Mortgage Fund that totaled $32,253.79. The total mortgage payments for 2016 will be $30,897.63 meaning that money designated for the mortgage will cover our payments this year.

At the end of November, the mortgage balance was $340,081.95. The church has Mutual Fund and other investments of $468,027. Excluding the mortgage and considering our internal “Fund” obligations, there is approximately $140,000 of money in our investments which is in excess of these internal obligations.

Pastor Moving Expenses: The church’s obligation for moving expenses was $10,000. Multiple people responded to the special appeal to address this un-budgeted expense. So far in 2016 there have been Pastor Moving Expense donations totaling $4,033.

Reception for Nolan Long Nolan Long has served Sugar Creek very well for eleven years and we will miss him. We are planning a reception for January 15 after worship so that all will have a chance to thank him for the excellent job he has done as our music director and Chancel Choir director. The reception will be from 11:15 to 1:15, in order for those who are unable to come immediately after worship because of Revive or outside obligations to still have a chance to express their appreciation and say goodbye. Please plan on joining Nolan and expressing your appreciation for his gifts!

Pastoral Care at Sugar Creek is very important in the life of the church. Pastoral Care concerns include any type of spiritual, emotional and physical need. If you or a loved one is sick, hospitalized, has experienced death in their family or community of friends, is facing a spiritual or emotional crisis or has any other kind of need the church can address, please know that the church is here to support and walk through these difficult times together with you. There are several ways to communicate Pastoral Care needs. The sharing of Thanksgivings and Petitions and through the Blue Sheets during the worship service are a primary way to do so. Outside of worship, contacting the church office, the key deacon and Pastor Brad are the best ways to communicate Pastoral Care needs. The key deacon is listed in the bulletin each Sunday and Pastor Brad can be reached through the church office or via his cell phone (214.662.7883). If there is a need or concern that is not being addressed, please contact Pastor Brad directly. He is available to make Pastoral Care visits on an ongoing or on an as needed basis. All Pastoral Care needs are important to us and the Pastoral Care team (pastor, Deacons, Stephen Ministers) are here to provide support for you during difficult times.

Deacons

Healing Touch Sessions are available at the church on the second Thursday of the month. For

more information, or to schedule a time, please contact Lois Milligan (513-855-4178).

Sunday, January 1 at 3:00 pm at Xenia Westminster: Melissa Tidwell Sunday, January 8 at 3:00 pm at Sugar Creek: Brad Dardaganian Sunday, January 15 at 3:00 pm at College Hill Dayton: Darryl Young

House of Bread January 7, 2017 is your next chance to pitch in and help feed the hungry as Jesus’ disciple. We are sending at least five volunteers to prepare and serve lunch at the House of Bread. We arrive at the House of Bread at 9 am and finish up around 2 pm.

Help Needed Outreach is looking for a few good souls to serve on their commission. They meet monthly on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 pm. Come and see what God is calling Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church mission outreach to do and to be!

The HR Committee is happy to announce that Michael Hefner will be serving as our Interim Chancel Choir Director as the search process begins for a new director. Already familiar to so many here at Sugar Creek through his work with the Children’s Christmas Pageant and frequent accompanying of the choir, Michael brings great talent as a pianist and choir director and we are grateful for his willingness to serve in this capacity. Also of note: SCPC has signed a 90-day contract with Beal’s Custodial Services to provide twice-per-week cleaning of the church. Following the completion of this contract the church will make the decision to enter a long-term relationship with Beal’s or to look for other services. A big THANK YOU to those who have generously helped clean the church in the meantime.

A Kiss on the Magic Spot Some of you readers have seen copies of this book, “A Kiss on the Magic Spot.” For the benefit of others, here is some background on it and how you may get a copy. Bob Lamb and his sons and daughters had a desire to memorialize Jean’s creative writing talents together with her strong faith. They also admired the caring services she received from both the local Alzheimer’s Association and Hospice of Dayton. The book’s title commemorates a favorite saying of Jean’s which she used often when her children were youngsters. It became even more common in her later years when she greeted friends and family. Her gestures began by kissing her forefinger and transferring the kiss to the forehead of a favorite person between that person’s eyes. When asked what that meant, she answered by saying that a kiss there goes straight to the heart and says, “I love you.”

Since all profits from the sale of “A Kiss on the Magic Spot” go directly to the two charities mentioned earlier, the cost ($20.00) is tax deductible. Those who wish to add to their library by acquiring this book can contact the church office or call Bob Lamb at 937-432-9116.

Deborah Circle meets the second Monday of each month, at 7:00 pm in the church lounge. The purpose of this group is Christian fellowship, Bible study and mission support.

Dorcas Circle meets the second Saturday of the month (unless otherwise noted) at 11:30 am for lunch at restaurant of choice. The membership is made up of widows and friends. The purpose of this group is to offer support and assist in coping with the reality of their losses, to express the complex emotions that are within, and to form new relationships and social participation.

Naomi Circle meets the third Wednesday of every month at 9:30 am, September through May. The purpose of this group is Christian fellowship, Bible study and mission support.

PW Crafts meets the second, fourth, and fifth Wednesdays of every month (September through May), and every Wednesday (June through August), from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm at the church. The purpose of this group is Christian fellowship and mission support. The crafts made here are sold in the Bazaar to raise money for our current mission projects.

Funeral Lunches are an important part of the PW program. When someone loses a family member and there is a funeral at Sugar Creek, we provide the luncheon following the service.

The Bazaar and Rummage Sale are two of our biggest fundraisers. The Bazaar is held in November, and the women sell hand-crafted items, homemade soups, and bake sale items. The Rummage Sale is held at end of July/beginning of August, and is exactly what it sounds like! The money made from these two events is used to support our current missions.

We invite all to be members of this organization and support its mission.

t.y.p. 2007-2016 - 6th Article By Mike Moorhead

The Thursday Youth Program (t.y.p.) continued its tradition of providing ministry to our 4-year-old through 6th grade children of the church. Each Thursday the children participate in the now Salt and Light Choir and the Angel Choir, classes in their age groups and everyone enjoys a family style dinner at the end of the meeting. Each year t.y.p. has a new theme for that year. 2007 the theme was “Making a World of Difference.” During the year the children were engaged in various mission projects as well helping the Deacons with the Valentine gift baskets for the homebound members of our church. Thru the ten year period of 2007-2016, the t.y.p. with other members of the church joined in the annual Crop Walk to raise money for various missions. The children and their families enjoyed a Thanksgiving dinner on November 15, 2007 and the annual Christmas Pageant was held on December 16, 2007. The weekly meals in 2007 were $2.00 per child and never changed in the ten year period of this article (2007-2016). 2008 saw a change in the fall of this year with the Cross Choir and Carol Choir combining to create the Salt and Light Choir. The choir director for this new combined choir was Ann Mundhenk. Preschool choir (Angels) was led by Katie Mauch. A new curriculum was started in 2008 known as “Worship for Life”. The Christmas Pageant (Get in Line for Christmas) changed performance time to 5:00 PM Christmas Eve on December 24, 2008 during Family Worship time on that day. 270 people attended the pageant that day. 49 children were registered for t.y.p. in 2008 with an average attendance of 39 children each week. The t.y.p. started “Ruby Bridges” in January, 2008 which involves a story about the first African American to integrate local New Orleans elementary school. The Kettering Fire Department brought a ladder truck to t.y.p. on May 1, 2009 to talk about fire safety to the children. The 2009 in t.y.p. recognized the group's official honorary grandparents being Charles and Betty Porterfield. One of the largest groups registered for t.y.p. in 2009 being 52 children. The average weekly attendance that year (2009) was 37 children per week. An additional 31 volunteers from the church helped serve meals and other needed assistance during the year. Activities during 2009 year included carnival/picnic on May 7, Thanksgiving dinner and annual Christmas Pageant. Katie Mauch graduated from high school this year and her sister Abbey Mauch became Director of Angels Choir. In 2010 again 52 children registered for t.y.p. with an average attendance that year of 37 children per week. Miss Wendy attended Presbyterian Educators Conference on January 25, 2010 beginning her process to becoming a Certified Educator in the Presbyterian Church. 45 children participated in Christmas Pageant in 2010. In 2011 the choir leaders continued to be Ann Mundhenk for the Salt and Light Choir and Abbey Mauch for the Angel Choir. The weekly meals remained at $2.00 per child in 2011. Miss Wendy continued her course work towards becoming a Certified Educator by attending the Christian Education course held in New Mexico on January, 2011. The t.y.p. had a fun trip to Edwards Farm for a bonfire/wiener roast on November 3, 2011. In 2012 the t.y.p. 4th, 5th and 6th graders had a “Lock In” at the church. The children arrived at the church on Friday at 6:30 PM on April 20, 2012 and were picked up by their parents the following morning at 9:30 AM. The children had pizza, snacks and played Cosmic bowling at Woodman Lane Bowling alley. The t.y.p. year started a month later (October 10, 2013) than normal due to construction going on at the church. There were 37 children registered this year (2013) with an average weekly attendance of 28 children for the year. The 2014 year for t.y.p. had many activities for the children including having Stanley Aultz attend one of their meetings and showing them how to make crepes. Other activities for the year were helping raise funds at Crop walk, Thanksgiving Dinner and Christmas Pageant. A new gathering time for meetings was started in 2014. The new time was 4:15 PM to 4:40 PM. This time was for worship, singing and praying. The theme for 2014 was “Jesus is the light of the world and we are the reflection of his light”. t.y.p. helped to raise $700 dollars this year (2014) by participating in Crop Walk. Weekly meals remained at $2.00 per child in 2014 year. In 2015 t.y.p. had 27 children registered for (January-May, 2015) and 41 children registered for (September- December, 2015). This represented a large increase in attendance from earlier that year. 2016 represents the 50th Year celebration of t.y.p.. As we can all see t.y.p. has had a tremendous history at Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church. The dedicated teachers, volunteers, parents and the congregation as a whole deserves our thanks and gratitude in helping our children grow in their spiritual and everyday lives. What a great journey. Job well done.
