Our sculpture programme is comprehensive, with a collection of genuinely innovative artwork that offers collectors the opportunity to complement the art that adorns their walls with expressive three- dimensional physical pieces. The definition of sculpture has widened immensely during the 20th century and with the development of new tools and techniques, the whole creation of sculpture has changed with the introduction of new materials, techniques and spatial concepts; “sculpture” is no longer a fixed term but rather an ever-expanding art form that is constantly evolving and redefining itself. The sculpture portfolio features an eclectic range of subjects, styles and surfaces - surfaces being an extremely important aspect of three-dimensional artwork – it is to be as aesthetically pleasing to the touch as it is to the sight. Each limited edition piece has been forged from pure bronze or porcelain resin, depending on the specific aims and wishes of the artist, and prices range from £250 to £50,000. The desire to collect sculpture continues to be a growing trend in the 21st century, with a larger appreciation of its value and the aesthetic beauty it can bring to an interior that is shaped by colour, form and texture. It is through this increased demand that the variety of our sculpture programme continues to grow, and indeed goes from strength to strength, with the introduction of a greater range of artists that solely produce three dimensional artwork.

Renowned British sculptor April Shepherd captures the appearance and attitude of her subject in a way that is both authentic and utterly engaging. Each piece explores the ideas of movement, life and how animals express their physical and even emotional presence. April pushes the boundaries of the materials she uses and working freehand without armatures allows her to maintain full control of the evolving piece and to energise the forms she creates. Through loose yet definite mark making, she works vigorously, ‘pulling out’ a shape that expresses raw energy, attempting to exaggerate, yet maintain, anatomical truth.

April’s distinctive smoke fired sculptures bring something completely new to a familiar subject. She works initially in clay, taking this natural, organic material and using it to portray her own take on the natural world. Her creative process is strongly bound up with transforming one natural object into another her art, which is so strongly connected with nature, could be said to emerge from nature itself, reformed and reborn. The resulting sculptures are both beautiful and tactile, and offer us a connection with the subject, the artist, and not least, the earth itself.

April has undertaken prestigious commissions for clients including Morgan Stanley and the British Embassy in India. Her work is held in private collections worldwide and has been shown in many mixed exhibitions at venues including the Royal Academy.

Carl Payne’s extraordinary figurative sculpture is based on traditional tenets but has a bold contemporary style. He is part of an artistic movement in which technical skill, quality and craftsmanship are valued and enjoyed within a modern and forward thinking aesthetic. He is inspired by music, the female form and a host of artistic figures including Rodin, Alfred Gilbert and Charles Sargant Jagger, as well as many of the Pre-Raphaelites.

The list of Carl’s completed commissioned work is extensive, including many household names from the sporting world, commerce and the past: King George and Queen Mary commissioned by Cunard for the ballroom of the Queen Mary 2 cruise ship, Torvill and Dean for a public statue, and George Best, Bobby Moore and Pele for private collectors. His personal favourite is the Sir Stanley Matthews statue at the Britannia stadium: it is the largest sculpture he had created and was technically challenging, dynamic, historical and unique – it was also voted the best sporting statue in Europe.

Each of Fabian’s magnificent bronze sculptures is based on his own original ideas and photographs and captures the emotional impact, imagination and atmosphere which are his hallmarks. These powerful, large scale works add depth and gravitas to an already outstanding oeuvre, as Fabian proves himself to be as adept in three dimensions as in two.

As with his paintings, each piece is driven by narrative and invites us to step both back and forwards in time as we surround each figure in our own version of their story. He says: “I constantly seek in the sculpture what I seek in a painting: rhythm, texture, expression, proportion, essence and soul.” Fabian creates his sculpture using the traditional lost wax method, an ancient process which dates from the third millennium BC. The sculptor creates the original figure in wax, then coats it with plaster in order to make a mould. The wax is then heated and poured away leaving the hollow mould ready to be used in the casting of the pure bronze sculpture. The work may then be finished by hand, and Fabian has used a unique and spectacular green-tinted patina.

Jennine’s arresting bronzes are both beautiful and unmistakable. Following in the footsteps of some of the greatest European sculptors of the past, she uses the ‘non finis’ technique to create immense drama. Like Rodin, whose work seems to be trying to break out of the stone from which it is carved, she allows her highly polished, elongated figures to emerge almost organically from a rough-hewn base as if they are stretching up out of the earth towards the skies. This juxtaposition of smooth and textured surfaces amongst her curves and shapes renders these distinctive works as stimulating to the touch as to the sight. Although sculpture does not have the scope to play with light and atmosphere in the way a painting can, it has its own reality - a vivid physical presence that is denied to the pictorial arts. The forms of sculpture are tangible as well as visible, and so they have a direct appeal not only visually, but also to our tactile sensibilities. All three-dimensional forms are perceived as having an expressive character as well as purely geometric properties, striking the observer as delicate, aggressive, flowing, taut, relaxed, dynamic, soft, and so on. By exploiting these expressive qualities of form, Jennine is able to communicate a wide range of subtle and powerful feelings through her work. “I have my own personal motivations – there is a reason behind every sculpture I make. But I hope whichever piece people are drawn to they will make their own connections and have their own feelings towards it.”

Mackenzie Thorpe loves the unassuming things in life; childhood memories, cowboys, steelworkers, football, good times shared with a bunch of mates…. These are the things which endear him to his collectors – a universality and authenticity, a sense of a great artist who is also in touch with the day to day realities. His captivating and charismatic sculpture demonstrates this absolutely. Inspired by the everyday, each irresistible figure or tableau is exquisitely crafted into a uniquely expressive evocation of movement and personality.

Sometimes an idea for a sculpture will come to him directly in which case he sketches it down to work through later. At other times though, he will finish a piece of work on paper or canvas and when he stands back to look at it, it tells him it really should be a sculpture. Then the challenge is on to realise the image in three dimensions. He says:“When I am creating with clay, the piece really does take on a life of its own.I use non-drying clay so I can keep going back to the piece and change it as I see fit.When I go back to a sculpture I have worked on myself, I can feel my own hands on it, my own thumb prints for example, and that is immensely satisfying. I love rolling my sleeves up in the foundry; when I am working in metal I still try to communicate love, hope, challenge fragility, innocence... all the things I draw about I try to put into my sculpture.”

Working as an artist since 1989, Mackenzie has created one of the most recognisable and acclaimed oeuvres in contemporary art. His original paintings, published works and sculpture are held in private and corporate collections across the globe, from Japan to Australia, from the USA to New Zealand, as well as Europe and the UK. His collectors include famous names from the worlds of sport, music, film, politics and royalty. He has also undertaken many prestigious commissions for clients ranging from The Andre Agassi Foundation and the Elton John Aids Foundation to Princess Anne and William Hague.

Michael Simpson is world renowned for the versatility and technical excellence of his bronze sculptures. A lifelong fascination with animal behaviour has combined with his outstanding artistic talent to produce tactile pieces that capture the charm and energy of domestic animals, birds and wildlife. He works from direct observation and from his own sketches and photographs, and the walls of his studio are covered with reference material. He prefers to work his initial sculpting in wax or occasionally clay uses clay depending on the subject and size before the bronze casting.

Michael’s work has been sold all over the world. He has collaborated with other artists including David Shepherd and his celebrity collectors include Tom Jones. He has sold work to raise money for a number of charitable causes including the David Shepherd Wildlife foundation and the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

Intrigued by the history of his art, Michael says: “Bronze has been valued and appreciated from the earliest civilisations in Greece, Egypt and Rome to the modern world. It is fascinating to remember that the manufacturing techniques employed have changed little over the years, so my contemporary sculptures are rooted firmly within a strong ancient tradition.”

Grant Palmer is a hugely exciting new addition to the sculpture portfolio for 2017. His sculptures are charming and nostalgic character pieces with a contemporary slant, which take a gently humorous look at day to day life and relationships.

Our inaugural collection represents his uniquely joyful take on fun and relationships, often between the young and old. In his whimsical world, everyone is ready to enjoy themselves; age is meaningless for the young at heart. He says: “Personality and character is the main theme throughout my work. I like to reflect human emotion which can be connected to on a personal level. It’s the greatest compliment when people tell me they feel my pieces have a genuine soul.”

An avid people watcher, Grant describes himself as an observational sculptor, looking for distinctive mannerisms and body language - the things that make an individual stand out. He then takes mental notes or even quick reminder sketches to use at a later date and delights in using these in his quirks and characteristics in his honest, original and instantly recognisable sculptures. Each sculpture is developed from these preliminary sketches and ideas.

Ed Rust is a Yorkshire-based British sculptor who constructs spindle-like bronzes which give a whimsical slant to sporting and other outdoor pursuits. Ed’s primary concern is to represent animated rather than static figures, and he achieves this by exploring the ideas of proportion, stretching and manipulating parts of the sculpture into extreme positions until they seem to be mid movement. Despite their exaggerated lines and humorous attitudes, these quirky figures touch people by tapping into the shared experience of sprinting down the wing or being pulled almost off your feet by an overenthusiastic dog. Studied art at Batley Art College where he discovered new ideas and was influenced by some great artists. A huge admirer of 20th century sculptor Barbara Hepworth, her modernist works have greatly influenced Ed’s style. His dynamic sculpture has been likened to the distinctive elongated figures of another great artists of the 20th century Alberto Giacometti.
