The harsh selfassessment of hs performane as a soally ommt

ted poet s an mportant theme n the posthumous books. In Winter

Garden, Neruda aepts soltude as a fathful ompanon who wll

aompany hm on hs nal journey toward larty. In The ea and

the Bell he longs for the pure slene n whh a human beng may

lsten ntenty and whh n death beomes an afrmaton of the

yl power of nature the smple truth of a yellow branh

In ths book, Neruda arrved at a new heght n hs searh for a

dret and aessble language that would resonate for ts larty He

wanted to wrte a poetry that woud return the gft of hs nvestture

transformed by a ommtted fe and a generous sprt Even wth

ther sadness and anger, these poems arm lfe the aeptane of

dversty wth ompasson, and the takng of responsblty for onesown destny.

Whle translatng The ea and the Bell was enlghtened and

humbled, wathng ths venerable man ome to terms wth a lfetme

of hoesof havng ated and not atedbefore he ded As he

squares hmself wth hs past Neruda fulls a requrement for enat-

ng the proess of bengn ultura and poltal hange n HspanAmera, aordng to Otavo az one of the eadng nhertors of

the poets roe as poltal ommentator. The rebrth of magnaton

n the realm of art as n that of pots has aways been prepared for

and preeded by analyss and rtsm wrtes az n Conergences.

beeve that ths duty has faen to our generaton and the next.

But before undertakng the rtsm of our soetes ther hstory

and ther atualty, we Hspan Ameran wrters must begn by rtzng ourseves. rst we must ure ourselves of the ntoxaton of

smplst and smplfyng deooges Neruda does not approah hs

readers armed wth an deologa system and ts rhetornstead

he gves us personal vaues lear dstntons and a eebraton of

the varous forms of love. hs may be hs most personal book of

poems mbued wth deep ompasson and vunerablty

    This broken bel

    still wants to sing

the metal now is green, the color of woods, this bell

color of water in stone pools in the forest

color of day in the leaves.

    The bronze cracked and green

the bell with its mouth open to the ground

    and sleeping

    was entangled in bindweed

and the hard golden coor of the bronze

turned the color of a frog:

it was the hands of wate,

    the dampness of the coast

dealt green to the metaland tenderness to the bel

    This broken bell

    miserable n the rude thicket

    of my wild garden,

     green bell wounded,

its scars immersed in the grassit calls to no one anymore no one gathes

    around ts green goblet

    except one butterfly that flues

over the falen metal and flies off escaping

    on yelow wings

It happened to me with some fellow who came

with references, I was geing o know  him

a passenger on the ship he same shipon which I was saiing, weary of faces

I wanted to avoid himit was mpossible

So, I set myself to do the righ hin g:

I woud be friendly raher than aloof

ye ony because of hs ho-blooded woman

tall and beauiful, blooming, and her eyes!

Now in ths ravelers sad tale

I see wha I did wrong

    My generosiy was provincal.

His misery spirit didn't ge any beter

wih my friendly company on tha shphis lack of trus in himself grew worse

    (and later with trembling hands),

    with little bells with wate,

    with sweetness

    I was always ariving late.

I had traveled fa from who was,I could not answer any questions about myself

I had too oten let who I am

I went to the next house,

    to the next woman

    I taveled everywhere

    never worked on Sunday

but I never claimed to be God.

I never worked Monday through Saturday, because I happen to be one azy creaure

I was saised to watch the seets

    where everyone was working, weeping,

    stonecutters ofcias, people

    with tools or with ministries.

Once and for all, I cosed my eyes

so tha I woudnt face my debts:

    that is the one thing

    I kept whispering to mysef

    in all my hroas,

    and wih all my hands

I caressed in my daydreamswomen's legs as hey hurried past

Later I drank the red wine of Chile

for enty days and en nights.

    I dank ha crimson-cooed wine

that beats inside us and disappears

in your throa like a sh in a seam

I must add to this confession

ha afer this I slept, sep and slep,

    without rnouncing my evil ways

    and wihou remorse:

I slep deeply, as if rain were faling
