Using this resource
•Always open the notepad to see teacher’s notes and activities.
•Watch or listen to the video with the sound or picture off and ask children to describe what they think is happening. Then turn the picture or sound back on and ask how it changes their understanding.
•Ask children to highlight features on screen using the drawing tools.
•Use the mask tools to focus on part of an image or to slowly reveal an image. Can children guess what it is?
•The new page facility allows you to create your own pages using any of the video clips, audio files and resource images from Find Out About: The Seaside. For example, resource images captured from a video could be assembled in a new page, with the task of ordering them correctly and adding explanatory notes or using the drawing tools to add additional features. There are ideas for new page activities in the notepad pages and Teacher’s book.
•Print any screen or notepad.
Find Out About contains the best of BBC video alongside pictures and activities to provide unforgettable lessons for your children.
Technical support and installation directions, as well as a full introduction to the features, tools and navigation, can
be found in the booklet inside the CD-ROM case and via the help button that appears at the top of each screen.

Introduction

Find Out About The Seaside is a rich cross-curricular resource based around the National Curriculum programmes of study for Geography, History and Science. The Seaside features Barnaby Bear and Magic Grandad, together with a range of additional BBC resources which help children examine features of the coast, the sea and beaches and to compare the seaside as it is now with the seaside in the past.
Each unit looks at a different aspect of the seaside, covering natural features such as the coastline, types of beaches and the sea, and man-made features such as buildings, funfairs and lighthouses. Several units focus on methods of travel, exploring changes in transport over time and the ways in which distance affects travel choices. The final unit looks at seaside safety both in the water and on the beach and highlights the safety codes that children need to follow when they visit the seaside.
The teacher’s notes are designed to support planning by giving a clear overview of the content and coverage of this resource. The curriculum grid at the beginning of this book (which is also included on the CD-ROM) shows the main learning objective for individual pages within each unit, highlighting links to the National Curriculum, QCA Schemes of Work and the Primary Framework for Literacy. The remainder of the book then gives more details about the content and coverage of each unit in turn.
Notes for each unit begin with an overview of the content and a list of key ideas developed throughout the unit. The paragraphs following take each page of the unit, showing what is covered and highlighting the key skills and understanding promoted through the notepad suggestions. Additional materials related to the unit that support further development of key ideas are also included. Activities are pitched at children working within levels 1 and 2 of the National Curriculum.
Throughout the units there is a high emphasis on developing the use of language through speaking and listening activities. Hot seating, talk partners and role play are used regularly and it is anticipated that children will already be familiar with these.
The following headings are used to highlight the focus of additional materials:

In unit 5 a focus on transport illustrates how methods of travel to the seaside have changed since Victorian times. Differences between holidaying at home and abroad are also explored, raising awareness of different money systems, languages and the need for a passport when leaving the British Isles.
Key ideas
•There are many different ways to travel.
•Transport has changed over time.
•Travelling abroad involves crossing the sea.
•We need passports and different money when we travel abroad.
•People in many countries speak different languages.
•Clothing has changed over time.
Barnaby Bear goes to Roscoff in France
The video of Barnaby travelling by ferry to Roscoff in France illustrates departure and arrival procedures, the distinctive features of the ferry, and the role of the captain and crew. Notepad activities include labelling using technical vocabulary, assessing the appropriateness of different transport methods and making a passport. Opportunities for children to develop and practise the geographical skills of identifying different places on maps are also included.
Barnaby Bear explores Roscoff
The video of Barnaby exploring Roscoff provides opportunities for children to compare and contrast where they live with a holiday destination on the continent. Alongside obvious differences, such as words on signs, children are prompted via the notepad to notice differences in the types of plants that grow leading to consideration of climatic differences and the impact this has on an area. Geographical and literacy skills are promoted through designing a postcard and writing a ‘things to see’ brochure.
Finding your way: Visit Brightsea!
A tourist map featuring points of interest such as a lighthouse, pier, beach, cliffs, hotels and restaurant provides a useful resource for developing geographical skills. Notepad activities develop a sense of direction, effective route planning, partner talk, descriptive language and the use of symbols.
Going on holiday with Magic Grandad
The video focuses on transport in the 1900s, and includes original black and white footage. Through notepad suggestions, children are encouraged to spot the many different forms of transport and compare and contrast them with those in use today. Seaside clothes past and present develop labelling skills and the advent of the box camera is used to prompt children to write an advertisement.
Packing your suitcase
This drag-and-drop activity provides further opportunities for children to compare and contrast 1900s seaside objects with those of the present day as they look at and sort a range of images. Historical skills and understanding are developed through using clues to place objects in chronological order. The literacy skills of discussion and explanation are also promoted through notepad suggestions.
Literacy focus: Going on holiday: What has changed?
Then and now images support children to embed the historical skills and understanding acquired while working through the previous two pages. Notepad activities encourage literacy development through adding speech bubbles to characters in the photographs and writing postcards based on the 1900s and modern pictures.
