KOLBE CATHOLIC COLLEGE GREENVALE LAKES
NEWSLETTER NEWSLETTER No. 16
8 December 2016
THE SEASON OF ADVENT Advent and Christmas is an ending and a beginning, an Epiphany break and a time of re-creation. It is a holy season, of being set apart from the distractions of this world to spend time with God. This is why we need Christmas. It diverts us from the bad and encourages us to think of the good. We can ponder on the words whispered to an apostle two thousand years ago:
God so loved the world that He gave his only son. That act of love offers us healing and holiness. It gives us the ability to live at peace with each other and with our God.
May the Christ child greet each of us with shining light, that we may spread his warm embrace and kindle the hope of Christmas in all whose lives remain in shadow. Come and be our strength O Lord, our hope and our salvation. Amen.

This program is an essential part of Kolbe’s ongoing commitment to improve curriculum delivery, providing your child with current and future e-learning opportunities. All Year 7 and Year 8 students have returned their iPads. The returned iPad must be in good working order and good condition. Failure to do so may incur an additional cost to families. 2016 Orientation Programs Orientation programs for 2017 for all year levels were conducted recently. The staff prepared extra work, planned lessons and shared critical information about the 2017 courses with students. This was to ensure a smooth transition at the start of next year. I thank the staff for the dedication to their responsibilities – especially as they were finalising assessment and Reports at the same time. Parents can be reassured that the programs were very detailed. Attendance requirements at the college for the orientation programs had not changed. Attendance was compulsory.
Learning Groups for 2017 At the start of 2017 your daughter/son will be placed in a new learning group for core subjects and some electives. These groups, have been carefully planned (just as they have been every year) taking into account various dimensions of schooling – learning enhancement, personal development, maturity, wellbeing, gender balance, responsibility and skills. The combinations provide the best opportunities for all. At the parent information nights in February 2017, more information will be provided about the strategies in place, for all learning groups, supporting our ongoing objective to be ‘an outstanding community of learning’.
College Magazine The 2016 College magazine will be available for distribution in late January 2017.
Student Wellbeing: School has finished for the year and a long stretch of rest, relaxation lies ahead. It is a time to prepare for Christmas, spend time with family and prepare for 2017. These times can be stressful for families and your sons/daughters may need some extra support. If you have any concerns, then talk to your medical practitioner. Families can check on line for contact details of services such as: CatholicCare (Melbourne): http://www.ccam.org.au/ Headspace (Craigieburn): http://www.headspace.org.au/headspace-centres/headspace-craigieburn BeyondBlue: http://www.beyondblue.org.au/ We hope that all students really enjoy the holidays and return refreshed for a new start to the 2017 school year.
Merry Christmas The College Leadership Team, staff members and I take this opportunity to thank each and every member of the Kolbe community for your generosity of spirit, support and loyalty, donations to worthy causes and giving of your time throughout the year. We wish you all a very happy and holy Christmas and a safe and wonderful holiday break. May Christ give peace to our hearts and minds. Let us bring peace and hope to all we meet and receive it in rich measure ourselves, so that we can witness to the triumph of light and goodness. May the life and legacy of St Maximilian Kolbe inspire, guide and support us. See you in 2017 ... the 10
th year of Kolbe Catholic College
Mr Anthony Kirley Principal
From the Deputy Principal
As the end of the term approaches, I wish to congratulate all of our students for what has been a terrific school year of innovative learning at Kolbe. Supported by key staff, many students have represented the College proudly in a number of events, ranging from sporting contests to investigative and experiential learning competitions. At the College, there has been a vibrant and positive feeling about a sense of future, where most students have undertaken orientation programs positively, thus, proceeding on their learning journeys effectively. The orientation programs aim to raise the bar to make learning relevant and engaging, and illustrate a snapshot of what 2017 will bring to each student. I hope that the experience has enhanced growth so that students effectively make the most of their opportunities. Again this year, I commend the efforts made by the College staff and the response of students in their living of our three underpinning values in “faith, compassion, and courage”. During this year, students have yet again shown great leadership skills and reverence in school celebrations. However, we seek your support to address a more consistent wear of the College uniform in 2017. Recent uniform checks have confirmed that some continue to avoid the correct wear of our College uniform. Detentions have been issued to for all students out of uniform, and in some cases, students are required to go home and change. This measure is necessary as we continue to teach students the value of the College uniform, of improving organization and following rules and expectations, and I thank you for your support in this matter. At different year levels, students experience different expectations and requirements at this time of the year. Please ensure to be familiar with what those expectations may be, and if unsure, please request advise and support from your child’s Learning Advisor. I wish all Year 12 students well as results will be provided to each. I hope that transition to tertiary education or work is fruitful. In 2017, I urge all students to make the most of what is available to them, particularly the conferencing and support that their respective teachers can offer at all year levels. As the final month of the year comes to a close, and the Advent celebrations take place, I wish you all a great time with your loved ones. The true meaning of Christmas is to share and give, and in doing this, we remind ourselves of the beauty of life as a blessing. Please take care, enjoy the time and recharge the batteries so that we do it all over again in 2017. I look forward to being at your service again in the new-year.
Dr Napoleon Rodezno Deputy Principal
From the Assistant Principal - Learning & Teaching

It has been the tradition of La Trobe University to provide a platform for students of participating schools to showcase their projects alongside the third year engineering projects. This opportunity not only gives our students a big boost in confidence knowing that they are capable of producing comparable projects but also provides authentic learning opportunities and inspiration by their interaction with Professors, Students and Industry partners. Advent Reflection A voice cries in the desert: prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight.
- Matthew 3:3 Give me the Grace O Loving God, to hear the voices calling to me from the deserts of our world. Show me how to change my ways and make you present in our world through compassion and generosity to those in need. Then this Christmas will truly be a celebration of Emmanuel, God is with us. Amen
- Sr Eileen Brown SGS
Holocaust Centre Excursion Our new Year 12 group spent half a day this week at the Jewish Holocaust Centre in Elsternwick to make further connections with our Jewish brothers and sisters but also to hear about the Holocaust of WWII in great detail from survivors of the Nazi concentration camps. This generation of students will probably be the last to hear from survivors and it was our great honour to hear from two such people at the Centre. Their life story was beautifully depicted and the fact that they bear no grudge is testament to their strength of character, courage and faith. The Year 12 students were also fortunate to our the museum and see the many exhibits, many of which are personal belongings donated to the Centre by survivors. Our students had a wonderful experience and now a deeper appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy today.
Mr Adam Calderone Director of Faith & Community

MacKillop Family Services This year Kolbe Catholic College has had the privilege of partnering with MacKillop family services to donate gifts for Foster children around Victoria who might otherwise go without during the Christmas period. Nichole, the fundraising coordinator from MacKillop family services addressed students in MacKillop House and nominated students from the other 5 houses to kick start the Christmas fundraising appeal. Nichole provided insight into the life of a foster child and what it means to be a part of a Foster family and how children don’t necessarily get to spend Christmas time with familiar faces. Each PC across the school were encouraged to set a fundraising target and decide on a gift for a girl or boy for a specific age group. The targets set by the students were ambitious, with some great ideas for gifts that could provide a lot of joy for children who might otherwise not celebrate happiness during Christmas time. The Kolbe Community joined together to provide donations through personal contributions and fundraising efforts around the school such as selling soft drinks to raise additional funds.
Houses were able to purchase some amazing gifts for the recipients, including bikes, C.D. players, board games, sporting equipment and numerous gift vouchers, which were presented at our final House Christmas Liturgy on Thursday 1 December. As a College, it is estimated that gifts totalling $3,500 will be given to children and adolescents this Christmas. The students should be so proud of what they have achieved, knowing the difference it will make to a young person during the Christmas season. A sincere thank you to all who contributed, and wishing you a happy and safe festive season with your families. Mrs Sarah Davis MacKillop House Leader
SACCSS Awards Lunch On Thursday 17 November, 18 students attended the SACCSS awards lunch held at Catholic Regional College in Sydenham. The purpose of the awards lunch is to congratulate students for their efforts in the areas of SACCSS Sport and Premier League across all year levels of the college. Students were given lunch, shown a presentation and had the opportunity to listen and ask questions to two guest speakers on the day, Ezi Magbegor and Moana Hope. Both of these guest speakers are elite athletes and give our students something to aspire for in their sporting endeavours. Ezi won a gold medal as part of the under 17 Female Australian Basketball team in Spain in 2016 and Moana has recently been drafted to Collingwood for the new Women’s AFL competition in 2017, Moana is also the first female to kick over 100 goals in the VWFL. Congratulations to Mackenzie Hastings and Jenna Bodinnar who were the recipients of the John Landy award, this award is given to students who have shown sportsmanship and competitive spirit throughout their time at Kolbe Catholic College. Congratulations to our award winners and all students for their participation in SACCSS events throughout the 2016 school year. Mr Simon Insolia and Mr Daniel Nolan
