ST. JOHN’S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
THE SEASON OF LENT AT ST. JOHN’S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Satur-day. It is a period of reflection and repentance for all Christians. Ash Wednesday -- 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5 in the Sanctuary Ash Wednesday worship begins Lent. The applying of ashes on the forehead is a way for a Christian to participate in the call to repentance and reconciliation and to trust in God’s redeeming love in Jesus Christ. Special Preaching Series -- “Son of God: Who Do You Say I Am?” beginning the weekend of March 22-23 The “Son of God” movie will be released nationwide, including in the Quad Cities theaters, on February 28. It is an epic biblical drama film based on the ten-hour miniseries “The Bible” which was shown last year on the History Channel. It explores the life of Jesus Christ from his birth through the resurrection. The sermon series features video clips from the film that coordinate with each week’s message. The four week series titles: The Son of Man, The Sinner’s Friend, The Anointed One, and the Coming One. Lenten Bible Study -- “Son of God: Who Is He?” on Wednesdays, March 19 through April 9 This four week study will be led by Rev. Anne and held in the Parlor from 6:30-8:00 p.m. This small group study helps members go deeper into the biblical text and the themes from the film and find answers to who Jesus really is and what his life, death, and resurrection mean for people today. There is a study guide ($8.00) and the group will discuss questions related to each week’s video clip and message. Palm/Passion Sunday Worship – Sunday, April 13 This Sunday concludes the preaching series. Children will process with palm branches at all services. Seder Meal – 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 17 in Fellowship Hall We invite you to enjoy a re-creation of the traditional Jewish Passover Meal served family style by St. John’s Boy Scout Troop #6. Reservations are needed, please contact the church office. Holy Thursday Worship – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 17 in the Sanctuary Holy Thursday commemorates Jesus’ Last Supper. The service includes Holy Communion. Good Friday Worship – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 18, in the Sanctuary This reflective service focuses on the death of Christ on the cross.
May this season of Lent be a blessed and holy one for the people of St. John’s United Methodist Church.

Rev. Anne’s Reflections
Our current preaching series is based upon the teachings of Jesus as found in the Gospel of Matthew in the section called the Sermon on the Mount. The above pictures were taken when Steve and I, traveling with a group from Garrett-Evangelical Seminary, worshipped on the Mount of Beatitudes by the Sea of Galilee. This beautiful spot commemorates the Sermon on the Mount, and our group was able to spend time in worship and communion in one of the groves atop the hill. This was a powerful experience for us and an opportunity to connect to the story of Christ and to understand more of what it means to follow “in the footsteps of Jesus.” In that place and with a group of passionate Christians, it was easy to imagine the voice of Christ calling “Follow me.” However, in the busyness of our work, school, church and community commitments, it is not always so easy to discern or hear the voice of Christ saying, “Come and follow.” Yet, Christ is calling you and me…all of us. Let us not allow the distractions of our personal lives or the distractions of our society to make so much noise that we cannot “hear” or con-nect to the voice of Christ. If the call of Christ fades into the background, then so does our faith – and it shows in our words and actions. Here are some things you and I can do to keep the call of Christ in our hearts: (a) Spend at least 5 minutes in devotions every day. If you don’t know where to start, take a copy of the Upper Room devotional book. These are located in the hallways outside the sanctuary. (b) Worship regularly with our brothers and sisters at St. John’s and get to know the people sitting around you. (c) Study with a small group. We have Sunday school classes as well as a great variety of groups on Wednesday evenings. These are all great ways to insure that the call of Christ is in the foreground and not the background of our hearts and lives. Blessings on the Journey, Rev. Anne

V I M (VOLUNTEER IN MISSION) Last year we lost a very supportive member of our VIM outreach ministry when Vera Hansen passed away. For years Vera has allowed us to park our VIM trailer for hauling tools, bedding, food and numerous supplies as we embark on our mission trips in one of her farm build-ings. Vera’s family graciously designated St. John’s VIM to receive memorial monies when she passed away. Recently Vera’s family asked that these monies be used by the Red Bird Mission School to help further the edu-cation of those less fortunate. We thank Verna Cudmore and Vera’s children for their generosity.
The next VIM trip is to help with Oklahoma Disaster Re-covery. The team will leave early Sunday morning, April 27 and return home on Saturday, May 3, 2014. Cost for the Volunteers In Mission experience will be approxi-mately $300. 00 per person. Contact Sandy Koester, 320-1467 before March 31 to register.
ST. JOHN’S FOUNDATION BIRTHDAY St. John's Foundation wish to thank the following mem-bers for their contribution to the Foundation Birthday Fund through the month of January: Bernie Carpenter, Gary Jantz, Doug & Sandy Koester, Penny Peterson, Marilyn Springer, Bob Border, Gayle Spaans, Karen Weimer, Carl Dresselhaus, Mary Hoff, Jan Carlton and Odessa Bean.
ADULT FELLOWSHIP Adult Fellowship will resume, after our winter hiatus, on Wednesday March 5, 2014. We will meet for pot luck lunch at 12:00 noon in FELLOWSHIP HALL. Following lunch Reverend Anne and Steve Braudt will present a program about their experience in Palestine working with and getting to know the Palestinian Christian Com-munity. Steve will also highlight his extended time there working with a human rights group and also with children and youth in the refugee camp using art pro-jects as a help in healing. Come and enjoy the food, fellowship and what prom-ises to be a very interesting program. Please bring a dish of food to share and your own table service. All are welcome. If you are not on the calling list, please phone 332-3433 to tell us you will be there.
PRAYER AT ST. JOHN’S
We all have our own times and styles of praying, but however we pray, it is part of our lifeline to God! Our Jesus Country and Living Faith! services are small, inti-mate, praying & caring groups. The prayer chain gets many requests from them. The services in the sanctuary are larger and more formal, but still there is a lot of con-cern and prayer. Prayer not only connects us with God but to each other. When we pray for others, they be-come known to us in a unique way. The PRAYER BOOKMARK is a part of the weekly bulle-tin. If you or a family member wants to be lifted in prayer on the bookmark and/or prayer chain, please call the church office at 324-5278 or Janice Becker at 355-3981, and let us know of your wishes or fill out a prayer card in your worship service and state if you want the request to be on the prayer bookmark. It will be on the prayer chain which is more private and includes a large variety of prayer concerns. It is important that we get permission to put the prayer request on the bookmark and/or chain as some people want their prayer needs to be between them and God. It is also appreciated when you let us know of changes in your prayer concern!
MISSIONS UPDATE Willie Trusheim, Missions Committee Coordinator
MARCH MANNA FOR MISSIONS: CARE LINK
Our Care Link Offering is important for local families having difficulty pay-ing their rent or utilities. A family can apply one time a year for help. The maximum amount they can receive is 200.00 Churches that participate in the Brady Street area can apply for three families a month if funds are available. But because of the lack of funds, usually one family per church is allowed funds. Funds are short and applications are more than can be helped. If St. John's raised $2,400.00 those funds would provide one family a month for a year, at $200.00. Gas and electric bills are more than that a month this cold winter. How can we help others?? Consider giving the cost of one meal you eat out a week for a month. Or give 1% of your monthly take home pay, social security. Give what you spend on pizza, ball game, or movies for a month. Set a goal for yourself and work toward it. Lent is a good time to give up something for our self for others. Pray about it!! Identify Care Link on your check. Thanks for giving. DID YOU KNOW!! --Kids For Hunger Offering totals $1,007.00 toward $1,500.00 goal. --Blanket offering at last report is$1,481.00 toward $2,000.00 goal. You can still give to these causes if you haven't yet. Just mark your gift. --Church World Service gives thousands of blanket to needy people every year where ever disaster strikes. --They have paid $5.00 a blanket for years. The uses are endless. -- Churches United Annual Representative Meeting is March 27th. Dr. James Forbes, Senior Pastor of Riverside Church in New York City will be the speaker. Plan to go. ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING OFFERING, MARCH 22, 23 The One Great Hour Of Sharing Offering is very important as the driving power for Mission Work in the United Methodist Church. It helps pay a major portion of the administrative costs of all our mission work. This allows all the contributions given through the Advance Pro-jects to go to the project. It has been received for over 50 years. Last year St. John's gave $1,000.So lets aim for that again. An envelope will be provided in the worship services. Set your goal and work toward it. God will lead you in your giving. Thanks for supporting this vital offering.
GREEN TEAM TIDINGS Can Drop Sunday is growing. We will now accept non-Iowa aluminum drink cans — such as non-Iowa pop and other cans like V8 juice cans. All money raised from the Can Drop will benefit Eco Ministries. We will also now have an Ink Cartridge Drop. Bring in your empty ink cartridges at the same time you bring in your cans. Money raised from the ink cartridges will be split 50/50 with Eco Ministries and Boy Scout Troop 6. The Can Drop day is March 23. Mel Lower will be out in the parking lot to receive your cans and ink car-tridges from 9:30-11:00 a.m.
Come join us Sunday, March 9 following the 11:00
a.m. service in Fellowship Hall for good food
and fellowship.
The menu will be: Taco Dinner
FOOD PANTRY NEWS Another good month for as bad as the weather has been. We collected 590 items. A wide variety of items were collected but we still need crackers to go with the soup. We collected 99 cans of vegetables; 33 cans of fruit; 32 boxes of mac & cheese; 47 cans of soup; 22 boxes of Hamburger Helper; 15 boxes of pancake mix just to mention a few. Hopefully the weather will be changing for the better and we can get out and shop for those who are less fortunate than us. Watch the grocery store ads. There have been some great buys on can products. Food Pantry is the third Sunday of the Month. Hope to see the baskets overflowing in March. Sharon Imming

Snow is nice… on Christmas! Yesterday we set a record for most snow in a winter in history. The bad thing about that is we still have eight or nine weeks where snow is still a very distinct possibility. Needless to say, I am done with winter. We will wait and see if it is done with us. All of the snow and shoveling has got me to thinking about spring and summer. I get excited when I think about the things that are coming our way in the coming months. Our 2:42 experience has been and will con-tinue to be amazing. Easter is coming. We have a great confirmation class that will be confirming their desire to be a part of our church family. We will be celebrating “Change the World” again this year at the end of May into June. And those are just the things that I know at this moment. Living in Iowa has taught me one thing for sure, “If you don’t like the weather, wait a bit, it will change! The snow piles are temporary and so is my frustration. As I look ahead, I see warmer days and great things ahead for our church family. Then I realize that great things are happen-ing year round here at St. John’s. I thank God for you and your minis-tries.
I am because we are!

TRUSTEE TALK Each month the St. John’s Trustees will publish “Trustee Talk” to keep you, the congregation, informed about projects the trustees are cur-rently working on to maintain or improve our beautiful church. Let me introduce the St. John’s trustees for 2014. NAME: PROJECT EMPHASIS Bernie Carpenter Spring and Fall Church cleanup day Ryan Connell Water Mitigation Project Barb Groenenboom Spring and Fall Church cleanup days and Painting Jim Groenenboom Parsonage Inspection and Painting Doug Koester 3 year plan development and grant writing Bill Otten Electrical conversion to LED lighting Pat Parker Vice Chairperson, Alter Fabric, Landscaping Joy Sherwood Secretary and Center Board Representative Gary Smith Water Mitigation Project Glenn Wilkerson Building Superintendent/ Staff Rev Anne Lippincott Senior Pastor/ Staff One of the first projects will be a new roof on the elevator. The current roof was installed in 1996 and needs to be replaced. Another important project is to replace the worn and time damaged fabric behind the cross in the sanctuary. The new fabric has been ordered and when it arrives we will prepare an installation schedule. The trustees want to acknowl-edge the funding for both of these projects from the St. John’s Founda-tion. Next month we will talk about the Sanctuary LED lighting project and the landscaping plan for 2014. Talk to a trustee if you want to know more.
Take up Your Mat and Go! He stood up, and immediately took the mat and went out before all of them; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!” Mark 2:12. Is God calling you to get up and get moving? Will those around you be amazed if you actually got up? Would they glorify God for the work and action that you did? Here is an opportunity for you to get off your mat and go! Joining us on a mission project this spring? We are headed to Hous-ton, Texas where we will be working for a ministry called "The Bread of Life”. http://www.breadoflifeinc.org/ On any given night in the City of Houston approximately 10,000 women, children, and men find themselves homeless. Approximately 870,000 families in the city go hungry as a result of economic down times, underemployment, and unem-ployment. Houston definitely has a problem! The Bread of Life, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, provides solutions to these problems through sustaining, equipping, and transforming the forgotten – with compassion. The trip is scheduled for March 14th – 22nd, 2014. We will be traveling by church van, with a group of youth from Cedar Falls First United Methodist Church. Ages 13 and up are welcome - but space is limited (only 7 spaces left) so if you are interested contact either Pastor Steve Braudt at [email protected] or Jamie Lippert at [email protected] . You can make a difference in the lives of many and enjoy the warmth and hospitality of Houston, Texas .
