Weeping as he watched Carthage burn, P. Cornelius Scipio Aemilianus, the
adopted grandson of the victor of Zama, and later called Africanus Minor, turned
to his friend Polybius, the historian and exclaimed,
“Nations have their lives, just like men: one day the hour of Rome will strike”

According to Livy, Scipio Africanus and Hannibal, while both were in exile in Ephesus, Syria,
had a friendly conversation about their campaigns against each other. In the course of this conversation
Scipio asked Hannibal whom he considered to be the greatest general up to that time. Hannibal replied
by naming Alexander the Great. Asked again as to whom he considered the second greatest, Hannibal
answered, ”Pyrrhus”. Again asked for the third, without hesitation he replied “Hannibal”. Them Scipio
asked, ”And had you conquered me, where would you have placed yourself.” Hannibal quickly
answered, ”Above even Alexander the Great;”
