Page 14 Dear friends,
YAY!!! It’s January, and officially winter! I know many of you don’t really care for winter, but over the years I’ve really gotten to enjoy the cold-
er months and have tried to appreciate every season of the year. Even driving up to the mountains and seeing the bare trees and the frozen ici-
cles makes me smile. We are very blessed to live in such a beautiful part of the country.
Well, If you thought for one second that we would slow down over the winter months, you are wrong…haha. Linda Hyder (UT Extensions Of-
fice) and I will be offering a new program called “Pathweighs to Health”. This series was designed to empower participants with skills to build
a healthier lifestyle. (Please see front page for more details). The program has been approved by the Governor’s Healthier Tennessee Initiative,
and tested for effectiveness by the Dietary Guidance Alliance Committee. It is implemented through the University of Tennessee Extension.
Cost is only $30 and will start on January 24 and meet weekly until April 4th. Hope to see you there!!
Also, starting this month will be the “Living Well with Chronic Conditions” program. Linda Hyder of UT Extension and Kathy Scruggs of Se-
vier County Health Department are certified instructors and will provide participants with information on how to take CHARGE OF YOUR
LIFE! If you suffer from heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, anxiety, high blood pressure or any other chronic disease, then you will love
this class. A beautiful workbook, and weekly meeting are included with this program. There is no cost, but we ask that you please pre-register.
Give this class a try and I promise you will love it!
I went to an aging conference back in September and while there we were given information regarding Alzheimer’s Disease. Did you know that
Alheimer’s Disease is the 5th leading cause of death? Sadly, there is no cure for this disease but it has been researched and studied greatly over
the last several years. It is known that if you are going to get the disease it can’t be stopped, however by challenging your brain it can slow the
process down. I along with several community partners will be offering a weekly “BRAIN GAME” activity starting in January. I do not have
the exact date and times yet, but I am very excited to offer this to you. This will be a non competitive activity that will challenge
you to work your brain in ways that are different from everyday life. I am so looking forward to spending time with you and
hope to see you at some if not all of our scheduled days. More information will be available soon.
Have a wonderful month my friends!

New Year's Resolution: Get Fit
Aren't the holidays about good times with loved ones, great food, and merrymaking?
Anyway, beginning Jan. 1, you will eat healthier and work out. Starting then, you will get fit. This will be your New Year's resolution. Life will be better after
December.
If you're nodding your head and thinking, "Yup, I'm one of those people," take heart. Your objective is a
noble one, and, if accomplished, will surely do wonders for your health.
For the average person, a good fitness program consists of exercises that work out the whole body. Because bodies are living, breathing matter, they need to be stimulated in order to become more fit.
This means exercise is ideally done just outside your comfort zone. You're taking your body a little outside
where it is, because it needs that challenge - that stimulus - to be able to improve.
If that is basically what exercise is, then you as an average Joe or Jane should be able to "just do it,"
and be on your way to a healthy body, right? Perhaps. But as many people know all too well, it's not that easy to start a fitness routine, particularly for those who don’t exercise and the inconsistent.
Exercise does not have to be dull. Yet as people grow up, they lose the connection between fun and
movement. Taking classes with your friends is motivating and mixed with music and laughter the “routine” becomes less of a chore and more of a fun
part of your daily life.
Check the schedule for classes. There is something for everyone. JUST DO IT!!!
Wishing you all a very Healthy, Happy 2014!

Sugar Cookie I read a quote last year around New Years Eve & I’m sorry I don’t
remember who said it to give them the credit they are due, but it was
wonderfully said and what I wish for each and everyone of you this year.
So I will give you my version...
My wish for you for the New Year is to make lots of
mistakes. Because if are making mistakes it probably
means you are trying something new, you are growing,
you are pushing yourself and learning. And more
importantly you are DOING SOMETHING.
So, go ahead, make those mistakes, wonderful mistakes,
silly mistakes and yes, even stupid mistakes.
And please once you have made those mistakes share them.
Your mistakes can not only improve your life but the
lives of many people around you.
So even though it sounds mean….
Here’s hoping your New Year is full of mistakes!
Love, Karen

Page 11 WOW,
January has arrived and hopefully the new year finds you
and your family in happy spirits and great health. New
year’s is a time of resolutions to better ourselves and for
some, a time to make a commitment to give back to the
community. Personally I am entering the new year with a
renewed vigor and a realization that after a lot of trial
and tribulation I have been truly blessed since I arrived
here. I see every day the love and power this center has
to bring people back from dark places that they have
withdrawn to and to basically force them to have fun,
open up and let the love of this family shine through. It
warms my heart to hear the laughter and see the smiles
as I walk down the hallways each day. When I started this
job, I had hoped to bring a little joy to the life of some
of the seniors here, but I never expected that you guys
would touch me as much as you have and lift me up as
well. I can’t tell you all enough how much I love you!
With the Winter closing in, our activities are going to move
indoors. But not to worry, I have plans to keep you guys
entertained and challenged until the frost breaks and we
can play outside again.
Love you guys,
David

With fraud on the rise, it has become a major concern for Senior Citizens. Here are the most common scams affecting seniors today.
SCAMS TARGETING SENIOR CITIZENS
1. Health CareIMedicareIHealth Insurance Fraud
In these types of scams, perpetrators may pose as a Medicare representative to get you to give them your personal information. Never give any personal information to a Medicare representative
unless you have initiated contact.
2. Counterfeit Prescription Drugs
Most commonly, counterfeit scams operate on the Internet. The danger is that besides paying money for something that will not help a person's medical condition, victims may purchase unsafe
substances that can inflict even more harm. Never order medication from the Intranet unless you have cleared it with your doctor first.
3. Funeral & Cemetery Scams
Scammers often claim the deceased person had an outstanding debt with them, and will try to extort money from relatives to settle the fake debts. Never pay any debts without verifying the
legitimacy of the individual making the claim. Unsavory funeral directors may insist that you purchase unnecessary items or try to force the most expensive items on you. Always have someone
assist you when making funeral home purchases to be sure you really need what is being offered.
4. Bogus contractors
Someone may come to your home and claim you need major structural repairs on your home, usually the roof, or may offer to do low cost driveway repaving. Never agree to on-the-spot "repairs"
on the say-so from someone you don't know. Always obtain an estimate from a licensed contractor recommended by a trusted friend or relative.
5. Telemarketing
Perhaps the most common scheme is when scammers use fake telemarketing calls to prey on older people, who as a group make twice as many purchases over the phone than the national average.
Examples of telemarketing fraud include:
"The Pigeon Drop" - The con artist tells the individual that he/she has found a large sum of money and is willing to split it if the person will make a "good faith" payment by withdrawing funds
from his/her bank account. Often, a second con artist is involved, posing as a lawyer, banker, or some other "trustworthy" stranger.
"The Fake Accident Ploy" - The con artist gets the victim to wire or send money on the pretext that the person's child or another relative is in the hospital and needs the money.
"Charity Scams" - Money is solicited for fake charities. This often occurs after natural disasters.
6. Internet Fraud
Do not click on pop up windows that advertise any kind of downloads. Always go to a website directly to make these kinds of purchases. If you receive an email that appears to be from a
legitimate company or institution asking you to "update" or "verify" your personal information, do not provide this information. Call the company directly and speak to a customer service
representative. The lRS does not send emails requesting personal information. Do not ever provide information to anyone requesting information posing as the lRS.
7. Investment Schemes
From pyramid schemes like Bernie Madoff's, to fables of a Nigerian prince looking for a partner to claim inheritance money, to complex financial products, investment schemes have long been a
successful way to take advantage of older people. Never invest money in anything without consulting a knowledgeable family member or financial advisor.
8. HomeownerlReverse Mortgage Scams
Scammers like to take advantage of the fact that many people above a certain age own their homes, a valuable asset that increases the potential dollar value of a certain scam. Tax scammers often
send personalized letters to different properties apparently on behalf of the County Assessor's Office. The letter, made to look official but displaying only public information, would identify the
property's assessed value and offer the homeowner, "for a fee of course, to arrange for a reassessment of the property's value and therefore the tax burden associated with it. Never refinance your
home or take out a second mortgage without going through a reputable bank or mortgage company.
9. Sweepstakes & Lottery Scams
Scammers inform individuals that they have won a lottery or sweepstakes of some kind and need to make some sort of payment to unlock the supposed prize. Often a check will be sent with in-
structions to deposit it to your bank account. You will then be asked to wire a portion of the funds to an individual to take care of the taxes on the prize money. If it "sounds too good to be true", it
probably is. Legitimate sweepstakes and lottery prizes will not require you to wire money to anyone.

ATTENTION VETS
IF you had your picture taken with the bald
eagle “America” during the Veteran’s
ceremony, please come by my office and pick
up your print . Chuck and Chris Flammang
graciously printed all of the photos for us.
When Signing up for activities,
everyone will be asked to ride the
bus unless prior arrangements have
been made with DAVID only. Due to
the larger numbers of seniors on
each outing it is becoming
impossible to keep up with everyone
arriving and departing on their own.
Besides , half the fun
of outings is riding
with your friends.
