Pastor Truhan is currently recovering from surgery; her

monthly message will resume in the July 2020 issue of

The Sentinel.

Calling all artists!

We need a LOGO!

As we prepare for our 100-year anniversary, we need a new logo! ALL are invited to make a little doodle or two and put together an idea for our “Century at Central” anniversary logo! Our reunion committee will collect logo suggestions through the end of May and narrow it down to 2 or 3 for the congregation to vote on in June. If you have a general vision or idea but doubt your drawing skills, contact Colby Jones and he will help your vision become a reality!

Tips: This should be a simple design, black & white

Not too many small details: think something that is legible on a car bumper sticker or shrunken down to paper letterhead size; possible logo on a t-shirt

It should include somewhere Central Lutheran Church and Dallas, Tx

Samples/ideas can be mailed in to the church office: 1000 Easton Rd, 75218, or you can email them to Alesia Pearson ([email protected]) or Colby Jones ([email protected]). Good luck! We look forward to seeing your ideas!

Mission Trip Update

Due to Covid-19 restrictions and obstacles regarding travel and housing, YouthWorks has canceled all traditional mission trips for this summer. We are looking into options for local mission and service opportunities, however, options are extremely limited at this time. We will continue to watch for signups and opportunities to help those within our community and let you know as opportunities arise.

Blessing Bags Available

Forty-eight blessing bags were assembled in April and are available outside of the youth room in the Education Building. If you go to the church, you can pick up one or a few to give to those in need. If you would like one or two delivered to your home, please let Jennifer Nixon know at [email protected].

ELCA National Youth Gathering News

At this time, plans continue to be in the works for the ELCA National Youth Gathering in Minneapolis, Minnesota for June 29-July 3, 2021.

Every three years, high school youth and adult leaders gather for a week of faith formation through worship, Bible study, service, and fellowship. The theme for the next Gathering is “boundless, God beyond measure,” based on Ephesians 3:19 – “I want you to know all about Christ’s love, although it is too wonderful to be measured. Then your lives will be filled with all that God is.”

The Youth Gathering is open to all 8th-12th graders in the 2020-21 school year. More details will be available soon and we will have meetings as restrictions allow, but in the meantime talk amongst your families and friends to discuss the possibility of attending the Gathering.

Many have already joined us on Facebook for live Sunday morning worship. We invite and encourage you to join in worship together! We will include a link to a bulletin so you can follow the service. We also have extra LBW hymnals at the church that we can bring to you so you can better follow along and have the hymns. Please contact Pastor Truhan or the church office if you’d like a book!

One added bonus with the Facebook live worship – you will be able to see who else is worshiping with you! It really adds to the sense of congregation and community! Share the information with friends and neighbors and share the post announcing the service on facebook to help us share with others. If you miss the live service, the service remains on our facebook page as a video. Just click on the picture and you’ll see the lines/arrows at the bottom of the picture to play the video (click on the arrow).

CentalLutheran.org

Did you know we have a website? You can find current and upcoming information on our website. Right now, Pastor’s Voice, in the top bar of the page is where you can click and see the bulletin/program to follow for the live services. (There will also be a link on the Facebook page to be able to go there straight from Facebook. It will open in another tab and you will be able to go back & forth if you’d like. Once you start the live or recorded service, you’ll be able to hear everything happening even if you clicked over to the church site for the bulletin) Boxes at the bottom of the front page have information for upcoming events/activities and the “News” button on the right end of that top bar has the most current updates for various information for you, too. Some of it could use a little updating but the current events/activities are there!

Are you new to Facebook?

For those of you who may not have used facebook before, here are a few pointers:

Go to www.facebook.com. When it opens on the site, it will have the form right there to create a new account. Just follow the instructions – you’ll need to enter either your email or cell phone number and create a password. It asks for your birthday, they do want to make sure you’re over 18, and if you want, you’ll have the opportunity to indicate if you want to hide the year from others… 49 again?? When you have set up your account, you can search for other people you know and you can search for the church’s page. There are other “Central Lutherans” out there so search for “Central Lutheran Dallas”. You’ll get a page with options that match your search. Just click on our name/picture and it will take you there.

When you are on our church page, there’s a list of words in the left column like: about, reviews, photos, etc. Go down that column and click on “posts”. That takes you to our page and the most recent pictures and information we’ve been sharing. That is where you will be able to watch when we have the facebook live videos for worship times.

At the top of our page, under the picture that shows our Sunday School and Worship times, is a rectangle that says “Like”. If you click on that to “like” our page, when we post new things they will show up on your main page, too, and you won’t have to go looking for information.

Operation Salvage, our church-wide garage sale, will be rescheduled for a later date. Usually held the first weekend of June, we will plan to have it later in the summer or early fall when it will be a little more safe for those setting up, working & shopping. Items are still being collected in the shed by the parking lot or larger items/furniture (or things that can’t take the heat!) in the last classroom to the right before entering the parish hall.

YARD SIGNS ARE COMING SOON!

As we strive to stay connected and continue our worship together on-line, we want to let the community know that, too! The church is still open and Central Lutheran is going strong! Signs will be available soon! Contact Alesia Pearson if you’d like one (or two?). We’d love for every family to have one in your yard to share our presence with the community. We’ve had such great response to our online services, we plan to continue them when we resume meeting together in person! The

signs are free!

Care Team being formed!

It is important now more than ever to stay in touch! We know many of our members are not able to participate with our online services. Many don’t have e-mail to receive regular updates! Council members and many individuals have already been busy making phone calls and keeping in touch but we want to ensure that continues, and grows, as we start meeting in-person again. Please contact Alesia Pearson ([email protected] or 214-215-7670) if you’d like to be a member of the Care Team to help make phone calls, send notes, maybe take occasional meals to our members, visitors, and friends.

Requested items: peanut butter & jelly, canned meats (chicken, chili, Chef Boyardee); canned veggies & fruit

(they requested a lot of peanut butter!)

Contact Alesia Pearson if you plan to put out a box for your neighborhood so we can schedule a pick-up! ([email protected] or 214-215-7670)

With the help from some scouts, our garden is growing!

We’re pleased to benefit from a couple of Eagle Scout projects for our garden and community! Max Neace, from our own Troop 861, recently completed his project to put in additional raised beds and clean up the garden area a bit. These beds are a little lower and ready and waiting to be planted! As with other community gardens, these will be available to essentially lease to reserve a bed and cover watering costs. Please contact Ted Steinke if you are interested in planting one of these beds! We’ve got first shot at them and will open them up to the community. Any not claimed will be used by the IRC (International Refugee Committee) for additional use by refugee families.

Future plans include a flower bed to fill the inner part of the current half-circle both for the beauty of it and to attract pollinators for the garden.

We have additional possible projects for the garden in the works in various stages of the approval process for Eagle projects. We’ll let you know as those come through.

Mario’s Quote of the Month:

We weird people have to stick together! Remember that.
