Having been born in and having served as a Christian leader in predominantly Muslim lands, he is by experience and education, knowledgeable and conversant in Christian-Muslim relations. His book Pilgrims of Christ on the Muslim Road: Exploring a New Path Between Two Faiths has received wide acclaim. Currently on sabbatical living in Chicago, Reverend Chandler is speaking/lecturing around the world on this very timely topic. His book has been commended by such worldwide leaders as Desmond Tutu, Lord Carey (103rd Archbishop of Canterbury), Archbishop Elias Chacour, Eugene Petterson, Ralph Winter, Philip Yancey and others. STEWARDSHIP

First (Scots) Stewardship Survey We want to prepare for an effective and inspiring stewardship Campaign, one that will generate excitement, enthusiasm, and unite us with a common vision for our church.

Summoned by God’s grace in Jesus Christ to be friends and servants to God and neighbor, and to make disciples of all nations, our mission is to glorify

and enjoy God, honoring the past, serving the present, and shaping the future through shared ministries of worship, education, mission and fellowship.

To help guide us along the way we need everyone’s thoughts and input before we begin. As stewardship chair, I am asking for your help, please give us your best thinking and let us hear from you. We have thought of a church wide survey with a goal to not only increase giving, but also increase our members’ personal involvement with the ministry of First (Scots). Projects included leading worship, playing games with children in a park near the church, leading activities at schools, maintenance projects at two church sites, and more. Each evening the group gathered at a local sports complex for recreation. Other highlights from the trip included a zip line tour in the mountains and an afternoon at the surfing town of Dominical. Each night included games and worship which focused on the “What do you stand for?” theme. The group was even selected to perform “I’m Christian and I Know It” in the talent show. OCTOBER YOUTH NEWS

The group explored “Rolling Away Stones” through games, songs, small groups, worship, and keynote sessions. The group even participated in the variety show, writing and performing a song entitled “I Knew You Were Jesus.” Youth attending this year: Eliza Basel, Helen Gillespie, Lilly Gillespie, Megan Holderness, Mattie McKenzie, Carter Shubert, Elizabeth Snyder, Manning Snyder, Dalton Grace Wiggins, Sutherland Wiggins (work crew), Charlotte Zuraw (work crew), Hannah Leonhard (adult), & James Rogers (adult).

Reflections on the Costa Rica Mission Trip Dear First Scots Congregation, Thank you so much for all your support and prayers as twenty-three youth and adults embarked on a week long journey to serve the people of Costa Rica. We could not have done it without your financial support such as participating in the golf tournament or auction, but also your prayers and faith in us as youth. The time we spent in Costa Rica was truly an eye-opening and enriching experience. We spent the majority of our time playing with children and spreading God’s love throughout the community. It was awesome to see the love of God shining through the bright eyes and warm smiles of the natives, but also through the actions of all of our youth. Every one of us was able to connect with the children in a unique way despite the language barrier. One little girl stood out to me. I met her at an elementary school where we were teaching the children how to play foursquare. She was in my group and the only thing I really learned about her was her name – Helvinca, but she clung to me and gave me hugs like we were best friends. It was sad to say goodbye to her when we left the school because I thought I would never see her again. But, later that afternoon she came running up to me at the church with open arms. This caught me by surprise, but was a very fulfilling experience, because it helped me to see that the work we were doing really had an impact on the lives of those children. Going out of the country on this mission trip helped me learn a lot about God and also myself. Being in a different culture helped me to more fully understand that God is omnipresent and will be there for you or anyone on Earth that accepts him into their heart as their savior and Lord. Before going on this trip I would always think about what God meant to me and my relationship with God. But I never really considered sharing my faith and spreading God’s word to others. We did a lot of evangelizing on this trip in which we shared a little bit about our Father and understanding of God to the people of Costa Rica. I realized that we were not bringing God to Costa Rica, but trying to spread this Good News and draw others in. This experience made me realize how truly blessed I am to have God in my life and to be blessed with a loving family and great friends. Returning home from this experience I hope to keep in account of how blessed I am, and to keep serving others throughout our community. I am truly thankful for your support and helping all twenty-three of us experience a trip of a lifetime. Peace of Christ, Molly Davis

You are cordially invited to join the 1731 Legacy Society. While our pledges help support the annual operating budget and fund various ministries, there are other opportunities for us to exercise responsible and faithful stewardship that can benefit both the giver now and the church in the years to come. You can join the 1731 Legacy Society by making a Legacy Gift. The deadline for 2013 recognition is December 31st. Please consider some of the Planned Giving options in your financial and estate planning.

IF YOU ARE STILL EXPLORING: • Visit the Planned Giving link on our Church website (www.first-scots.org then ‘Missions’ tab then ‘1731 Planned Giving’ tab). • Speak with your advisors. • Contact Deanna in the church office at 722-8882 or Bill Prewitt at [email protected] (722-3331(B) 722-8125 (H))

Docent Program The history of First (Scots) Presbyterian Church is a varied and fascinating tale covering a period of more than two and a half centuries. The Docent program offers the opportunity for us to learn, as well as to educate and enlighten both visitors and congregational members of the history from our storied past to the present day. Docents share this history during brief tours, lasting about fifteen minutes, after each Sunday service during the year. Typically, Docents are asked to serve about four times a year. Additional members of our congregation are needed to participate in this important ministry. Training and a suggested script are provided. If you have questions or would like further information, contact John Dietz at 843-849-0719.
