Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A) A Sunday Reflection The Gospel readings in these few weeks before Lent present us

with the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord’s basic instruction of how we are to live as His followers. And today we are called to be salt and light.

We don’t often think of the importance of salt, but in ancient times it was so valuable that it was used to pay people’s wages; hence our word “salary”. And so, Jesus calls us to be salt for the earth (Mt 5:13). Salt gives flavor; salt also preserves. We are to bring the good flavor of the Gospel to those we meet and so preserve the good that is in them.

As for light, we all know how necessary it is, how frustrating it is to be in the dark. So it is also with the soul that lives in darkness. The Lord calls us “light of the world” (5:14), and commands that we let that light shine before others (5:16). Yet, it is not our own light that must shine; rather, we bear Christ’s light. Let it shine! God bless you.

Reflexión Dominical Las lecturas del Evangelio de estas semanas antes de la

Cuaresma nos presentan el Sermón de la Montaña, la instrucción básica del Señor sobre cómo debemos vivir si somos seguidores Suyos. Y hoy nos llama a ser sal y luz.

Hoy día no damos mucha importancia a la sal, pero en la antigüedad era tan valiosa que se usaba como medio de pago; de ahí nuestra palabra “salario”. Y Jesús nos llama a ser sal de la tierra (Mt 5,13). La sal da sabor; también sirve como conservante. Nuestra tarea es traer el buen gusto del Evangelio a todos los que encontramos y así conservar lo que hay de bueno en ellos.

En cuanto a la luz, todos sabemos cómo es de necesaria, cómo es de frustrante estar en la oscuridad. Igual sucede con el alma que vive en tinieblas. El Señor nos llama “luz del mundo” (5:14), y nos manda a que nuestra luz brille ante todos (5,16). Pero no es nuestra propia luz la que ha de brillar. Somos portadores de la luz de Cristo. ¡Que brille! Dios los bendiga.

The Sign of the Cross

ACCORDING TO WRITINGS that date back to the 3rd century, Christians have

been making the sign of the cross over their bodies from the very

beginning. Christian apologist Tertullian wrote at the time, “We Christians

wear out our foreheads with the sign of the cross.” It is believed this early

tradition of marking one’s body with the cross was inspired by a passage in

the book of Ezekiel (9:4).

The sign of the cross that Catholics make before prayer or any other

activity is not meant to be a superstitious act, but an outward profession of

faith. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “The Christian begins

his day, his prayers, and his activities with the Sign of the Cross: ‘in the

name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.’ The

baptized person dedicates the day to the glory of God and calls on the

Savior’s grace which lets him act in the Spirit as a child of the Father. The

sign of the cross strengthens us in temptations and difficulties” (2157).

The cross is at the very center of what we believe and crossing

ourselves is supposed to be a constant reminder of the price Jesus paid

for our sins. It is both a profession of faith and a simple prayer that has

such great power. It recalls that profound sacrifice of Jesus 2,000 years

ago and actively calls upon His aid to help us in our need.

La señal de la cruz

SEGÚN ESCRITOS que datan del siglo 3o, los cristianos se han marcado con la señal de la cruz desde un principio. El apologista Tertuliano escribió en aquella época: “Los cristianos nos desgastamos la frente haciendo la señal de la cruz”. Se cree que esta tradición de marcarnos con la cruz está inspirada en un pasaje del libro de Ezequiel (9,4).

El hacer la señal de la cruz antes de orar o de realizar cualquier actividad no es un acto supersticioso, sino una profesión externa de fe. El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica dice: “El cristiano comienza su jornada, sus oraciones y sus acciones con la señal de la cruz, <en el nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. Amén>. El bautizado consagra la jornada a la gloria de Dios e invoca la gracia del Señor que le permite actuar en el Espíritu como hijo del Padre. La señal de la cruz nos fortalece en las tentaciones y en las dificultades” (2157).

La cruz se encuentra en el centro mismo de lo que creemos, y marcarnos con ella constituye un recuerdo constante del precio que Jesús pagó por nuestros pecados. Es tanto una profesión de fe como una oración sencilla de gran poder. Nos recuerda la profundidad del sacrificio de Jesús hace 2,000 años y pide activamente Su ayuda para socorrernos en nuestra necesidad.

Holy Lives / Vidas Santas VENERABLE EMILIA DE SAN JOSÉ (1858-1893) —

Born in Caracas in 1858 to an affluent family, Emilia Chapellín Istúriz had to travel to Curaçao in order to enter the Third Order Franciscan congregation, as all religious communities in Venezuela had been suppressed by president Antonio Guzmán Blanco en 1874. But due to serious health problems she had to return home.

On returning to Venezuela, she founded and directed the San José de Maiquetía Hospital with the assistance of Fr. Santiago Machado. In 1890 she founded the Congregation of Little Sisters of the Poor of Maiquetía, first one established in the country, to care for the poor, sick and destitute.

Mother Emilia died in La Guaira in January 1893, at the age of 34. She was declared Venerable by Pope St. John Paul II in 1993.

VENERABLE EMILIA DE SAN JOSÉ (1858-1893) — Caraqueña, nacida en 1858 en el seno de una familia acomodada, Emilia Chapellín Istúriz tuvo que viajar a Curazao para ingresar en la congregación de la Hermanas Terciarias Franciscanas, debido a la inexistencia de comunidades religiosas en Venezuela, suprimidas por Antonio Guzmán Blanco en 1874. Pero tuvo que abandonar la congregación debido a problemas graves de salud.

De regreso a Venezuela, fundó y dirigió el Hospital San José de Maiquetía, con la ayuda del Padre Santiago Machado. En 1890 fundó la Congregación de las Hermanitas de los Pobres de Maiquetía, la primera del país, con el objetivo de cuidar a los pobres, mendigos, enfermos y desamparados.

La Madre Emilia murió en La Guaira en enero de 1893, a los 34 años de edad. Fue declarada venerable por San Juan Pablo II en 1993.

The call to conversion that Jesus addresses to all people of good will is fully understood in the light of the revelation of the

Son of God, upon which we have meditated in the past few Sundays. Sometimes it is impossible to change one’s life, to abandon the way of selfishness, of evil, of sin, because our commitment to conversion is centered only in oneself and

one’s own strength, and not in Christ and His Spirit. But our fidelity to the Lord cannot be reduced to mere personal effort,

no. To believe this would be a sin of pride. Our fidelity to the Lord cannot be reduced to personal effort, but must be

expressed in trusting openness of the heart and mind to receive the Good News of Jesus. This—the Word of Jesus, the Good News of Jesus, the Gospel—is what

changes hearts and changes the world! We are called, then, to trust in the word of Christ, to open ourselves to the Father’s mercy and to let ourselves be transformed

by the grace of the Holy Spirit.

La llamada a la conversión, que Jesús dirige a todos los hombres de buena voluntad, se comprende plenamente a la luz del acontecimiento de la manifestación del Hijo de Dios, sobre el que hemos meditado los últimos domingos. The Canonization of St. Hugh On February 17, 1220, Pope Honorius III canonized

St. Hugh of as a “white martyr”, one who through his life, demonstrated an exceptional witness to Christ. After his death, miracles began to take place at his tomb, giving rise to considerable support for his canonization. The Church of Lincoln had long wanted a saint of its own, and both Adam of Eynsham and Gerald of Wales wrote his life to assist the process, which the king also supported because the royal house had maintained a special relationship with the saint. His tomb, a place of pilgrimage in the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, was destroyed during the Reformation. Our parish will celebrate the 800th anniversary of the canonization next Sunday, February 16.

St. Hugh School earns certification in STREAM

First school in Miami-Dade County to achieve that honor

COCONUT GROVE — St. Hugh School has won certification in STREAM, an advanced system of education, becoming one of the first schools in the archdiocese — and the first in Miami-Dade County— to be so honored.

STREAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art and Math. The Florida Catholic Conference has run the system since the 2016-2017 school year, adapting it from an initiative by the National Catholic Education Association.

St. Hugh was notified in November by the Florida Catholic Conference, said Principal Mary Fernández. She said the certification was a milestone in the school's objectives….

Only two other schools in the Archdiocese of Miami —St. Anthony in Fort Lauderdale and St. Bonaventure in Davie — have achieved the same certification….

Key goals of the STREAM system include hands-on projects, creative thinking and interdisciplinary teaching….

St. Hugh began four years ago with STEM, a precursor system, then shifted to STREAM for the added art and religion. The rigorous STREAM process involves field trips, curriculum maps, co-ordination across subject areas, structuring classes to encourage student engagement, and visits from the FCC certification team.

Mrs. Fernández considered the religious part essential. She said the 316 students start every school day with prayer; they also attend Mass and other liturgical events.

Social justice — "helping people in need all the time, not just with a disaster" — is another part of St. Hugh instruction, Mrs. Fernández said. The students are prompted toward activities ranging from donating socks to taking part in feeding programs.

"It's our duty as Catholic educators to make sure our future citizens — both digital and global — have that faith component," Mrs. Fernández said. "Our faith is the essence of everything we live and breathe."
