History of the Church Library
Church libraries had their beginning as Sunday School libraries. Early church records of Central show that less than 50 books were moved to different locations for use by Sunday School teachers.
In 1946 a library was formed with Mrs. J. H. Green (mother of Glenn Ingouf and Sylvia Jones) as chairman. They recommended that a church library be organized with the specific purpose that “every phase of the organized life of a Baptist church be assisted and promoted by the library.”
Mrs. Edmond Keith, wife of the Music Director, became the first library director with 447 books processed using the Dewey Decimal system. After two years Mrs. Ross Dublin became director and served for the next eleven years. Mrs. Mark Hunter (Eva Nell) became director in 1960 after working with Mrs. Dublin for three years. Except for 18 months while at Central Baptist Church in Syracuse, NY and starting her first church library. she continues to serve today. Mrs. Mary Helen Terry served as director during that time.
Starting in an adult Sunday School classroom, the library has been in several different locations. The present location is the first time it has been in one designed specifically for a library.
