The Sewing Machine Buzz By Jeff Vogel Once again, where has the time gone? I am always the last one to get my article finished for the newsletter. I’m not setting a very good example for my staff! However, it always comes together by the deadline date. I just returned from two conventions, Bernina and Baby Lock. I booked two events for 2017 with Baby Lock ambassadors to come to town for show and tell, and teach their areas of expertise. Watch your newsletters and emails for details. At the convention I learned that during the Hope Yoder event, on November 4th or 5th, we will be doing some embroidery projects along with digital cutter techniques. I still have openings at that event as well as the Oct 7th & 8th SewApalooza. It is so important that we get great attendance at the events so you can enjoy more events in the future. The life of a quilting mother of a toddler; she doesn’t actually do any more sewing at home. My baby is being promoted to “Big Brother!" If it is a boy, my sewing machine can stay where it is with the hopes of finding some time to work on the projects awaiting me. If it’s a girl, well, she will get my sewing room. My sewing machine will get the closet with hopes of seeing the dining room table.

So it may be a while before this quilter really does much quilting, but life is good and I have a great job, a great boss and great co-workers. I get to be around beautifully colored fabrics on a daily basis, and help other quilters with their projects.

Elegant Elements is started and you will want to mark your calendar for the instructional demos I will be

doing. The demos will be on Saturdays for a couple hours. This project has kept me busy in the store and it won’t be much longer until you see my completed sample quilt hanging. And it was all done in the Hoop!

The girls have been putting the elves to work keeping new things coming your way. We have holiday class projects, Design Works, even some mixed media classes involving painting a bag! There is so much to do and we are keeping things fresh. It has been a great year and I can’t believe we are coming up on a new year. Looking forward to 2017, Jeff has already booked a couple events to keep things rolling.

Happy New Year!!

Some Little Hints….

Feed Dogs – Stitch length is controlled by how far the feed dogs move. Bigger stitches are a result of how far the feed dogs move. Pulling the fabric won’t make the machine sew faster. But it WILL deflect the needle. Result; bent or broken needles, needle strikes on the needle plate, the bobbin case, the hook, the presser foot or thread jams. Just be one with your machine and let the feed dogs do their job.

Tape – If you must use tape on your machine to make a seam edge please use blue painter’s tape. It’s easy to see, you can mark a line on it, and it won’t dry hard and leave a residue on your machine.

Pipe Cleaner – If you have an older machine where the tension discs are on the outside of machine an easy way to clean them is to use a pipe cleaner. If some thread or lint gets trapped in between the discs they won’t close all the way and your tension may be erratic. This is hard to do with the tension discs inside the machine.

Checking Tension – Here’s a hint especially for embroidery use, where you change thread colors frequently. Thread your new color but don’t thread the needle. Presser foot should be up. Pull the thread. It should move easily and freely. Lower the presser foot. Now pull on the thread. It should be tight and pulls harder. This

tech corner By Brian Davis

proves you have tension. Now thread the needle and sew. This will keep from having looping on the bottom of the fabric.

Oil – One drop. Repeat, one drop! Sewing machine oil only. Not sure where to oil? Bring your machine in and we’ll show you. I know we’re Americans, which means if one drop of oil is good 10 must be better! Wrong! More oil not only means a mess but acts as a magnet for lint, which dries up oils. One drop!

Thread – Believe it or not certain brands of machines work better with certain thread. Ask us which ones work best with your machine. Most of all try to avoid old and inexpensive thread. You’re just asking for trouble.

Needles – Get dull. Really. They do. Listen as you sew. If it sounds like the needle is punching through the fabric, change the needle. If you just don’t like the stitch quality, change the needle. If you hit something, change the needle. And every couple of bobbin full’s, when you clean your hook area (you were going to, weren’t you?), and oil, change your needle!

I hope these little hints will solve some of the common problems you run into when you sew. If we can help eliminate some of your frustrations, it’s a good day!
