Dear Hevre,
I hope that the new year of 5774 is off to a good start for you, and that you had a wonderful Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot.
The new year brings a lot of excitement at Oseh Shalom. I am delighted to welcome Deborah Ayala Srabstein, our new Religious School Director. She is a fabulous, engaging person, who brings a tremendous wealth of great ideas and experience. She is a wonderful addition to our community, along with her husband, Ari, and their very beautiful 7-month old baby, Talia.
Among many interesting programs and events this year, I’m very excited about a new initiative to heighten the community spirit of some of our Shabbat celebrations, improve the quality of our spiritual and educational life, and strengthen the interpersonal connections at Oseh Shalom.
On eight different occasions this year, we are asking all of our Religious School students and parents to attend Shabbat services. We will announce the exact dates very soon. The schedule of these programs will include three Friday evenings, each time on a first Friday of the month, already known as the ‘Family Service.’
(continued on next page)
Tots and their parents gather in the Sanctuary for the beginning of the Family Service, starting at 7:30 PM on the first Friday night of each month. At 7:45 p.m. we invite the young children into the Quiet Room for the Tot Shabbat service. The children are invited, but of course, not required, to join in the program, which lasts about 25 minutes. Afterwards, the Tot Shabbat participants may return to the sanctuary for the end of the Family Service. Please spread the word to anyone you know who has young children!

evening. The program schedule will also include three Saturday mornings, and two Havdalah programs early on Saturday evenings. During the eight weeks of these special community-wide Shabbat programs, we will cancel either a Sunday morning or a Wednes-day afternoon Religious School session.
Each occasion will include a communal meal. All members of our community and all age groups will be welcome to participate in the meal, the Shabbat service, and any other re-lated activities. The Shabbat evening and morning services will include our basic traditional content, as always. Cantor Charlie and I will continue to lead these services, as usual. The children may help to lead some prayers on each occasion, and we may offer some addi-tional explanations and stories.
Deborah is writing elsewhere about the great advantages of this community-wide program-ming for our students and their parents. I believe it will equally strengthen synagogue life for our many members and families who do not have school-age children. Older members will have a chance to connect with younger members and children, to share Judaism with them, and see our heritage brought to life in new ways. As we always say, “l’dor va’dor” (from gen-eration to generation). Young adults without children will connect with older members and families, make new friends, and perhaps find new role models within Jewish family life. Eve-ryone will experience stronger connections with other members and livelier ongoing Shab-bat celebrations than ever before.
Please stay tuned in for more information, and please let me, Deborah, and our Board mem-bers know if you have any questions or suggestions.
Shana tova - best wishes for the new year!
Rabbi Doug Heifetz

It was a privilege to speak to the congregation at Rosh Hashanah services as the President of Oseh Shalom.
I joined this synagogue over twenty years ago, after trying out several others in Bal-timore and Columbia. As many parents, I was looking for a synagogue where my daughter could attend religious school and become a bat mitzvah. At the time, I did not know that Oseh Shalom was a Reconstructionist synagogue or even what that meant.
What drew me initially, and which still inspires me, is the welcoming spirit of our community, the commitment to education, the values of social justice and egalitari-anism, and not least our beautiful building. Over the years as I became more involved, I have been most im-pressed and awed by the caring and support, thoughtfulness, and willingness of so many members to volunteer. It is a source of great joy to be part of a community with such a generous spirit.
Reconstructionists define Judaism as the evolving religious civilization of the Jewish People. A tenet of Recon-structionism is that all Jews, whether by birth or by choice, are part of the extended Jewish family. Another is that we are committed to both tradition and the search for contemporary meaning. My experience with the extended Oseh Shalom family is that acceptance of one another is the rule; knowledge of tradition and ritual by so many is profound; and there is a commitment to change; if that will improve life in our extended family.
We are an extended family that values education. As I mentioned, I came to Oseh Shalom initially so that my daughter could attend religious school; at that time Jackie Land was the religious school director. She continues to be an inspiration for generations of students and Jewish educators. This summer. Maryana Harouni left as Reli-gious School Director. Under the leadership of Andy Lincoln, the search committee spent many long hours seeking an outstanding person to lead our religious school. Their concern about our children’s education at Oseh Shalom is truly impressive. As a result of their efforts, we are delighted to have Deborah Srabstein as our new Religious School Director. Everyone who has come in contact with Deborah has been impressed with her openness, kind-ness, intelligence, and immediate dedication to the education of our children.
Our synagogue theme this year is Jewish Culture and Civilization; and there are many ways to participate in our evolving civilization.
Many of you lend your time and efforts to the activities of the Social Action and Caring committee, which is led this year by Helen Metzman and Margie Ginsberg. Many volunteers continue to be needed. We are the only syna-gogue in the area that participates in Winter Shelter - formerly called Winter Haven. As well, we are continuing to collect food for LARS and make and serve meals for Elizabeth house. Please see the many opportunities on the list-serve, and contact Helen or Margie to continue Oseh Shalom’s tikkun olam tradition and answer the call for the Social Action
The Life Long Learning Committee; led by Hillary Finkel and Judy Katz, has planned so many exciting events. For One Book One Oseh, we will be reading Songs for the Butcher’s Daughter, and the program will be further en-hanced this year with a meet-the-author brunch. In addition, there will be a three-session Yiddish program with Dr. Miriam Isaacs, The Irv Goldstein Memorial Peace Lecture featuring Dr. Shibley Telhami, and return of the popular Top Chef Oseh. The rabbi will be teaching a course starting in October on Sunday mornings with the title

“Parallel Tales in Judaism and Islam”. There are many more programs; too many to mention - please look for a post card from Life Long Learning, check the website and look for announcements on the list-serve.
As you have just heard there is so much occurring at Oseh Shalom. I would like to take the opportunity to ask you what draws you to Oseh Shalom and what else you would like to participate in? How do you see the evolu-tion of our Jewish civilization at Oseh Shalom? Is it different types of Shabbat and Holiday services; is it more Torah study, Klezmer, tango lessons, yoga classes, different social action opportunities, or socializing? The board, rabbi, and the cantor are interested in hearing your ideas. Oseh Shalom is rich in talented, imaginative thinkers; please share your thoughts by email or telephone call or by personally meeting with board members or me.
The spiritual home of our Oseh Shalom congregation, our beautiful building was completed in 1991. That doesn’t seem so long ago. Every time I walk up to our building, I feel the embrace of our synagogue and can’t help but gaze up at the dome. I’ve learned quite a bit about the dome over the past year, because the board learned that like all roofs, it has a finite life span and it now needs to be replaced. Barry Nove, our Facilities and Office Man-ager, along with our leadership researched alternatives to replacement, but found the dome, our Kippah, is be-yond repair. We have, therefore, just contracted for removing and replacing it. Sounds quite daunting, doesn’t it?
You will be pleased to know that we are not announcing a capital campaign. We have quietly brought the matter to the attention of long-term members and as of today have secured over 90% of the funds needed. The dome will be replaced in mid to late November of this year. The project at this point costs less than $200,000, and will include repair to the fiberglass walls outside the Rabbi’s study, the kitchen, and the entrance’s vaulted archway.
The new dome will have a projected life of 30 to 50 years and will have a glass coating over the sandwiched fi-berglass design, which will help extend its useful life. The natural light that filters through the dome should be even better than we had originally.
Those who have quietly and generously supported the dome project have performed a great mitzvah. The High Holiday Appeal, which supports the regular operations of our Oseh Shalom extended family, is your chance to also perform a mitzvah. So if you have not yet made a gift to the High Holiday appeal, please do. I understand that there are those who may not be able to contribute as generously as last year - due to their helping to see that Oseh Shalom has a sound and wonderful dome - a new, beautiful white Kippah above our sanctuary.
As we celebrated the High Holy Days here with our extended Jewish family, the collective energy of praying to-gether, blending our voices together, and hearing the blast of the Shofar together filled me with awe and joy. There are many people who worked hard to bring the High Holiday services and programs to life. A great debt of appreciation goes to the Rabbi and Cantor for their spiritual leadership, to the religious committee led by Andy Friedman, the Religious V.P., as well as to John Riehl for his many roles. A giant thank you to Karen Meckler, our Past President and High Holiday Coordinator; Allison Holtz, our Administrative V.P., Barry Nove, our Facili-ties and Office Manager, and the volunteers in the office, as well as Craig Hollander and his dedicated cadre of ushers.
I would not be addressing you as the President of Oseh Shalom without the love and support of my wonderful husband, Steve Kaplan.
Shana Tova!

From the Desk of Barry Nove P A G E 5
It was a pleasure to see everyone during Rosh Hashanah and Yom
Kippur.
Now that fall is here, we’re seeking to expand the Path of Peace. We
have orders for six bricks so far; however, the minimum installation
order is for 10. Last fall, we ordered about thirty bricks, which we
installed before December. I’d like to encourage every family that
would like to honor or memorialize family or friends to place their
orders now.
As was mentioned on Rosh Hashanah, Oseh Shalom will be
replacing the dome above our sanctuary. We’ve raised over 90% of
the funds and have not launched a Capital Campaign. The work has
been contracted and the production order for the new dome, which is
made out of fiberglass, will have a life of 30 to 40 years, and will be
delivered around December 2nd. Installation will begin shortly after
that and take a week or two to complete.
The Sanctuary will be closed during the renovation in December.
Services, classes, and programs will go on as scheduled. Services
will be held in the Social Hall. Please be aware that the parking lot
may have some restricted areas during this period.
I would also like to thank all the volunteers and staff, who have
worked so hard to make the High Holidays so lovely. Thank you:
Judy Arnoff, Mona Davis, Rose Fishman, Julie Frein, Diane Green,
Allison Holtz, Val Kaplan, Lisa Karpf, Doris Kirschbaum, Karen
Meckler, and Pauline Pivowar. I’d also like to thank our wonderful
staff: Rabbi Heifetz, Cantor Bernhardt, Audrey Klein, Deborah
Srabstein, Nina Chilbert, and Jose Solano (our maintenance man) for
all your help.

Life Long Learning Invites You to
Rabbi Scott Perlo 6th and I Historic Synagogue’s Associate Director of Educational Programming
Comes to Oseh Shalom Sunday, November 3 @ Noon Rabbi Scott Perlo is a dynamic and compassionate speaker who draws out the feelings and insights of his audience. He will speak about Rav Kook, a Jewish philosopher who wrote at the beginning of the 20th century. In the words of Rabbi Scott,
" [Kook's] notions of the person and the self ring true with our contemporary notions, and his challenges to our way of life resonate as authentic and worth our consideration."
Rabbi Scott will introduce us to Kook's complex but compelling ideas and approaches to Torah; he will guide us in understanding how Kook's ideas can help us to enrich our own perspectives on contemporary life.

Life Long Learning’s One Book, One Oseh Presents: An Author’s Brunch
With
Peter Manseau
Sunday, November 10 @ noon
Songs for the Butcher's Daughter is a literary triumph. In this accclaimed fic-tion debut, a “rich, often, ironic, homage to Yiddish culture and lan-guage” (Publishers Weekly), Peter Manseau weaves 100 years of Jewish history, the sad fate of an ancient language, and a love story shaped by destiny into a truly great American novel. It is a story that will win over read-ers' hearts and keep them turning pages long into the night.
In a five-story walkup in Baltimore, nonagenarian Itsik Malpesh—the last Yiddish poet in America—spends his days lamenting the death of his language and dreaming of having his memoirs and poems trans-lated into a living tongue. So when a twenty-one-year-old translator comes along, he enlists the young man’s services. What the translator finds in ten handwritten notebooks is a chronicle of the twentieth cen-tury. From the Easter Sunday Pogrom of Kishinev, Russia, to the hell-ish garment factories of Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Itsik Malpesh recounts a tumultuous, heartrending, and colorful past. But the great-est surprise is yet to come: for the two men share a connection as unlikely as it is life-affirming.
This event is free, but please RSVP to [email protected] or [email protected]. Songs For The Butcher’s Daughter is available in libraries, on Amazon, and at B&N.com.

The strong and stirring blasts of our Shofar blowers
The numerous readers of Torah and Haftorah
And of course, the ever-ready Oseh Shalom High Holiday Choir under the diligent leadership of Choir Master Charlie Bernhardt
We should also acknowledge the custodial and facilities staff for maintaining our building during the busiest sea-son of the year, and all the other members of the Oseh Shalom family who contributed their time and energies.
One of the things that I have always appreciated the most about our High Holiday services is the ever growing number of people who read Torah. This year was no different as we were presented with a group that represented a wide spectrum of those who make up our congregational family. What impressed just as much were the number of people who approached me after each service to inquire as to how they could join our corps of Torah readers. If you are interested in being a Torah reader (for High Holidays, festivals, or Shabbat), please contact me by email at
We would also appreciate hearing from you about the High Holiday services. Please be on the lookout for informa-tion about how you can best offer your constructive feedback. Also feel free to contact me by email or phone.
