Happy New Year and Welcome to the first Shark Bite of 2016. Its been a busy time since our November edition, even during our festive break we managed to fit in a game against a very competitive HMS Defender. With so much going on its difficult to fit into such a short space. Firstly, The Dubai 7’s was again a great success for us Sharks, with the achievement of being able to field two women’s teams, the Outstanding success of our U19’s in beating the Hurricanes in the U19 Gulf Plate final and of course the great success of the Bali Legends First ever Breakfast morning, held at the Warwick Hotel on Wednesday 2nd December, where we were joined by the All Black legend Sonny Bill Williams. It was a great morning and one not to be forgotten soon. The morning was hosted by our honorary member John Bentley, arranged successfully single handily by Trefor Elliott, and support generously by Dnata. I would like to thank Gary Chapman and his team for their continued support of the Bali Legends. We are now well back in to our league season, the Women teams continue their progress in the West Asia Series Women’s 7’s Series at the recent leg in Al Ain hosted by Kuwait and Heartbeat Tigers, all our teams keep themselves very much in the hunt for silverware in the as the last two legs approach us hosted by Doha and Hurricanes.

AmessagefromourChairman…

Our Men’s Team’s continue to make progress in the Conference and Community League with our 1st XV losing to the Dragons by 1pt at Sports City but beating the Hurricanes 30-17 at the 7’s on Friday 22nd January, which set up a fantastic day for last Friday 29th Jan , where we entered the day needing to beat the Abu Dhabi Harlequins 2nd XV, to retain our position of 6th in the Conference league and ensure we complete in the Top 6 play-offs. Alas, although the 1st XV gave everything they had in Zayed Spots City, they ran out losing 24-14 and swapped places with the Wasps 1st XV The 1st XV now have a fantastic opportunity to win the Conference plate competition, as they should not fear any team left in that half of the table. The second half of the season kicks off on the 12th Feb. We await the fixtures from UAERF later this week. Our 2nd and 3rd XV continue to have games where they look very capable of beating the opposition with many talented and skilfull players in both squads, but it is evident that a lack of training has not allowed the squads to develop and work on structures in both attack and defence which would certainly have helped in many games. However there are many Community league games left to play so there are ample opportunities for both teams still to come. On the 15th January 2016, we managed to pull of two significant first for the club, the first time we had Three teams play at home in 15’s and Off the field, we held our first Sponsors Day. Results on the pitch may have not been in our favour but our sponsors day was a great success. . Our Main Sponors RSS and DEKRA, present the Man of the Match for the 1st and 2nd team games and they had a great opportunity to network with many of our club members, which hopefully will lead to mutually beneficial relationships being built in the world of business and commerce.

The support or of our sponsors is crucial to our ongoing success so it is only right that where we can as club members offer support to them where we can in the business world. Finally our season kit has started to arrive. All players should now have Club Shorts and Socks. Our New Polo Shirts have just arrived from Akuma and if you didn’t get one this week at training you will have more opportunities next week to collect at training. The men’s Club ties have also arrived, which now has meant the match day Club attire or N01’s is now a white shirt and club tie. On the first two occasions where we have been able to use them, I can say we do look like a handsome bunch, in my opinion of course! We do have a busy couple of months coming up, with the Conference play offs due to start on the 12th Feb, there is lots more rugby in the Community league, The West Asia Women’s 7’s series completing on the 19th Feb, which will be followed by the Women’s 15’s Regional Teams Competition, where we will join forces with the Canes. Off the field we have the 6 Nations kicking off in less than 2 weeks, where there will be ample opportunity for the Northern Hemisphere folk to fire off some banter, The southern hemisphere folk will soon be shouting about how great the Super 15 is, Sorry newly expanded Super 18 is. There will be also a number of social occasion coming up soon to coincide with the 6 nations, free game weekends and of course the end of season. Please have a read through our great Newsletter as there is a lot of information contained in it that is useful. Mike Quinn Chairman Dubai Sharks RFC

The club day on the 15th was a first for the club on many fronts. On the sponsorship side, it marked our first ever “Sponsors Day”, an opportunity to host our main sponsors, RSS and Dekra Insight for our 1st and 2nd XV games. The day served to showcase our club to our sponsors, it provided a networking opportunity for our sponsors to meet club members with which meaningful business connections could be made and to show our gratitude to our sponsors for the tremendous support they’ve provided this season. We’ve come a long way these past few seasons and we really could not have done so without the support from RSS and Dekra Insight. Man of the match awards were presented by our sponsors. For the 2nd XV game, the award was presented by Simon, Vice President of Consulting for Dekra Insights to Jeremy Brisco whilst the MOM award for the 1st XV game was presented by Robin, Group Sales and Marketing Director for RSS to Joe Corcoran. As a show of appreciation to our sponsors, commemorative framed shirts were presented to RSS, Dekra Insight, James Tucker and Emril. Our commitment this year to RSS and Dekra Insight was to provide a number of networking opportunities throughout the season so that we can show the value of supporting our club. As we continue our development and transition into a major club in the UAE and hopefully Gulf league, we will need to do more to ensure the support from our sponsors is rewarded and this requires the ongoing help from each Shark member. Look out for and take part in future events. Thanks to everyone that played a part in making the first Sponsors Day a success

The 2015/16 season has witnessed a unprecedented improvement in the quality of rugby throughout the Conference league. The majority of clubs have stepped it up yet again making this a very formidable league to play in. Each and every one of the Sharks Rugby Club members can hold their heads high and be proud of the clubs performance thus far. History has already been made with three full men’s XV teams and two woman’s 7s teams, not only that but this has been a season where the 1st squad have consistently outperformed their previous appearances in the conference. The last three games of the season (pre-split) kicked off with arguably the most monumental day in Sharks short history, where three men’s teams pitched up at home against tough opposition on the 15th January. A day where the club’s players, officials and sponsors could celebrate the success of building a solid representation with true aspirations to move upwards and onwards in UAE rugby. The 1st squad had a very tough game against the Jebel Ali Dragons 2s. A team which in years gone by would easily put 80 points against us. At 20 points down at half time it seemed history was going to repeat itself, however, at half time the Sharks boys were clearly not beaten yet. Eager to kick off, the Sharks were ready and waiting well before the Dragons. The second half was certainly a sight to behold and completely dominated by the Sharks set play. Putting a penalty and 3 tries against the dragons in a display of clinical, intelligent and exciting fast paced rugby.

Only to be defeated in the last 3 minutes through a successful Dragons penalty kick. The final score of 22 – 23 was a bitter disappointment to the team nevertheless it was a true indication of the vast improvements the 1st squad have made. The club is growing from strength to strength and has the potential to play top flight rugby in the UAE. The fight for a top 6 place has never been so high on the Sharks agenda, now on equal points with the Wasps sitting in 7th place, the need to not only succeed and win, but to make a point and break teams that cross our path is clearly going through the mind-set of the players themselves. The game on the 22nd January bore witness to that fact. The Sharks played a very well-coordinated Hurricanes 2s team who are sitting comfortably in 3rd position in the league. Knowing that the Wasps were playing Al Ain, the boys knew that this was a ‘must win’ and not only that, as a minimum, it had to be a bonus point win. A small crowd of support made the journey to the 7s stadium, knowing full well of the potential of their tenacious 1st squad, rose to the sheer enormity of the occasion making more noise and showing more heart and passion than any Canes support ever could. And were they in for a treat...! The Sharks started the Canes game like they finished last week’s Dragons game, completely dominating across the pitch. Smothering the ball from the Canes grasp, retaining quick support running aggressive controlled rugby. The Sharks were first to put points on the board with a precise penalty kick and quickly increased their lead to 13 – 0 within as many minutes with a well-coordinated converted try.

We all knew this would be a numbers game and that the Canes were strong enough to bite back at the Sharks, which they did with a well-supported try through the centres. Nevertheless, the Sharks replied in close succession with another try of their own down the left wing and then continued to dominate across the pitch, out-performing anything the Canes threw at them, even with two men sin-binned, the 13-man Sharks side ran across the line for the fourth try and most importantly for that bonus point. Showing eighty minutes of determination, commitment and control both in attack and defence the Sharks Squad left the pitch with a bonus point victory away at the Canes with a final score of 17 – 30, a game that resulted in, what is arguably, the best demonstration of rugby the club has ever seen and the ‘must win’ to retain 6th position in the league was successful..

The last game prior to the split is against 2nd position Abu Dhabi Harlequins on Friday 29th January. The Sharks 1st Squad have stolen the wind from the Canes Sails and will use that to propel them forward in search for that all important win in Abu Dhabi. For the first time in the clubs history, the 1st squad, quite rightfully, believe that they have the ability to win this league. I certainly do, and I honestly believe the rest of the UAE rugby clubs are aware of that fact too and treat the boys with the respect they have worked hard for and truly deserve. #GoSharks #Proud2BaShark Richard Battley Head Coach Dubai Shark R.F.C.

It all started on Wednesday night with few players disappointed not to be selected for the first team. This feeling, however, did not last for long as they all realized the drinking time ( post game) had just been increase by at least a couple of hours considering the earlier start of the game. Coaches were likewise delighted to be able to put a very strong team on the sheet one more time and to earn the well-deserved name of “Super 2s”. I swear we even heard people saying “2s are the new 1s” or “1s is so old fashioned”. Friday was a very big day for the young Sharks club, having 3 men teams playing on their home ground. The entire club put a lot of effort in making this day successful and having all sponsors invited for the event thanks to Mark Welton, who even gave up his place in the 2nd team to make all feel welcomed. In front of us was no one but the undefeated Dragons 3rd, with 5 bonus points out of 5 games. So the challenge in front of the team was enormous but the team was ready to upset their stronger opponent this season. The game started strongly and we quickly realized why they were still to be beaten. Dragons ran some fluid moves to put them behind our score line after 5min. 5-0, the game was on. Behind a devastating Freddie who wanted to prove everybody that he deserves more and Jeremy who was tried on 5 different positions that day, all team came back into the game to close the gap to 5-3 after a penalty from Thibault. …commercial break: Dubai Sharks is recruiting for next season with the ambition to have 1 team in each UAE divisions. If you are looking to play for the most social and most ambitious rugby club in the region, get in touch with us… Only few minutes until half time and the Sharks are pressuring the Dragons. Backs are reinventing the rugby and creating moves and runs that few could think were possible. Forwards are hitting hard what looks like 8 years old kids now. 2 metres to the try line and Axe Man run between the legs of its opponent to score. Try converted. Half time. Start of second half. …commercial break: fan of cartoons but you don’t know where to find the finest of its kind in Dubai? JFT’s arm library is now open to all wearing the official Sharks hoodie... End of the game. A very well done to all who went on the field that day. Game was played in the best spirits, which were also drunk afterward too, and truly enjoyed by the many supporters. A special welcome to the new players Jeremy and Sean who will be glad to have joined this club As for the final score, I can only count until 10, and the Sharks put a lot of effort to make my life easier. Final score: 10-… to the Dragons..

Once again our 3rd Team was selected using a Shark cocktail of youth and experience. When the game started, and until the final whistle Sharks determination was shown through the team. The forwards demolished the opposition scrum at every crouch, bind, set! Lineouts were completive but scrappy. Around the park forwards and backs worked hard at the break down to secure the ball and even win possession The enthusiasm and commitment around the break down and taking Shaheen on was also part of our downfall… When we had the ball we always looked threatening, …pick and goes resulting in some good scores… but too many times, Knocking on at the ruck, handed possession to Shaheen, who exploited space and darted and weaved through our, often, dog leg defense, to score some good tries. Ball lost in head in clashes and in tackles, when the call before and during the game was pass, pass, pass, also cost us…on gaining the pill, Shaheen used their electric pace to run wide and again score some go points. The final score does not reflect the commitment, and enthusiasm shown by all who played …. Lots of good play, lots to work on, but also lots of talent to work with.

The 2015 Dubai 7s saw an added 5 teams and as such, many players who were available last season would now be under contractual obligation to play for their 15-a-side club as they entered their first 7s team. This change upset a 2 year plan put in place by head coach Zac Gawn with all players from the 2014 season becoming unavailable. The 2014 cup-quarter final result was looking like a hard result to beat already. After a rigorous 2 weeks of training the team came together to play their first game of the tournament putting in a winning performance against the overly confident Abu Dhabi Harlequins 12-7. Despite a good start to the tournament, Zac Gawn, standing 6Ft 2” at a lean 101kg, was not happy with the performance and flew in attitude and mentality coach Ben Bull. Mr Bull brought a calmness to the team that was previously unseen. This would prove to be a pivotal point in the tournament with the hardest match of the tournament so far, Dubai Exiles, coming up fast. The young u19s managed to build on their earlier winning performance and were a try-a-piece at half time against the much more experienced Dubai Exiles. Thanks to the ladies in the kitchen and the half time oranges, the Sharks were able to out play the competition and came out with a 2 try to 1 win and a great end to the first day. With a late first game on day 2 the team came together and were looking well in the first half with a try to Mitch ‘the enforcer’ after a great kick and chase. Unfortunately an early in the half call by the ref took the Dubai Sharks u19s down to 6 men and putting a strain on the team’s defensive efforts. Both sides came to play rugby but the sharks D couldn’t hold and let in a try. Despite a last minute try by Matty ‘the refrigerator’ Williams, there wasn’t enough time and the Sharks went down 12-10. This loss put the sharks second in their pool and meant that, on points for and against; they advanced to the sectional quarter final against the previously played Dubai Exiles. The two weeks training had started to show and allowed for some free flowing rugby. Jacques the Tyson had a try disallowed for an early shark fin celebration which was deemed ‘unsporting’ by the ref but managed to have a firm bite on things and direct the team with an outstanding performance to 17-7 win with tries to Sammy Pharaoh and Joshua Sheeran. To Alan Robertson’s delight the boys got a good night sleep and were well rested for their early semi-final on day 3 against Dubai College who had previously put a victory over the sharks earlier in the tournament. The young sharks came out of the gate swimming and put on early points with tries to Sammy and someone else. The momentum brought with it a refreshing brand of rugby with the set piece coming together to bring in a 27-7 victory and sending the Sharks through to the divisional final.

Mr Bull’s lasts words of ‘The team that doesn’t win will find itself on the losing side’ was just what the young Shark’s needed before taking the field against the bookie favourite’s Dubai Hurricanes. Unluckily or the Hurricanes the weather stayed clear for the whole match with the final score of 26-0. The early team tries and a bit of individual brilliance allowed the sharks to establish an early lead. The Hurricanes didn’t want anything to do with the Shark’s D, allowing for a clean sheet win and the Sharks locking away the Silverware for another year The Dubai Sharks are looking good with Mr. Armel van Erck stepping up and administrating over Junior Sharks Rugby in the upcoming ’16-’17 season. This move will put Sharks junior rugby on the front step and allow for great player development in both juniors and seniors in years to come.

For the first tournament of the year both sharks teams travelled to Al Ain… for the tournament hosted by Kuwait! With a surprising low attendance for the first 3 weeks of the season we managed to gather enough for two teams. The day started strong for the Sharks Bs coming out victors against eventual winners the AD Bats. A great game, especially taking into consideration it was the first competitive game in 2 months. Sharks winners by 15-10. Next up was a tough game for the As against a consistent AD Harlequins side. Quins size and power hitting up the middle proved costly, despite going down 19-7 the As had, without a doubt, the best try of the game, a great team effort from all the girls. After an unexpected short break the As were up again against familiar faces, the Tigers. Unlike the Quins, the Tigers were a bit more technical in their approach to the game. We had some great plays where we built up phase by phase which lead to our try, but in the end the Tigers proved stronger on the day. Sharks going down 19-5. The Bs were then up against another Abu Dhabi team, the Jesters. With the confidence of a win from game one, we dominated in every aspect of the game. Rarely have I ever seen a game where the opposing team did not have any possession in our half throughout the entire game. Unfortunately the Bs could only manage to gather 15 points in the end but the team really came together and played some great rugby, just small errors and decision making denied us scoring more tries. The As then faced the pace of the Hurricanes, Dubai 7s winners, and we were hoping to get some sort of revenge for that semi-final loss. With the girls coming out all guns blazing, unfortunately the game plan played into the strength of the Canes’. At half time this was rectified and proved successful in the second half, alas it was a bit too late to save the game. Tough match, speed and fitness of the opponents was their only strength, we will know and be prepared for next time. Bs then came head to head with the power of Sharjah, although bigger in size the Bs proved that size is irrelevant, playing some fantastic rugby, drawing defence left right and centre and exploiting the gaps. Bs coming out deserved winners. In a must win game against home favourites Al Ain Amblers the As had it all to play for. In a tight contest before the break, where the tactics of ‘hit up the middle’, used against the Canes’, proved unsuccessful we switched to pace and width. Two brilliant team tries were scored in the second half, planned and carried out perfectly. This led to a win 12-0 and ending with a bang for the As

Shortly after the Bs took on the might of Doha, a team we lost to at 7s, looking to put the record straight we started strong. With some players playing in both A and B leagues fitness eventually let us down. Doha were quicker to the ball and breakdowns and we were too reactive to their attack A close game saw the Bs lost 17-0, less then half of the 7s result so much improvement since then. A clean sweet would have been nice however it was a great day and a confident day for the Bs. . The final winner came down to points difference, with Sharks B, Bats and Doha coming joint 3rd, the Bats won with a difference of 67 points, Sharks Bs came in 2nd. All in all a great day of rugby, some great results, some not as good, but it was obvious that the team mentality, the girls playing for each other was back and stronger than before. Both teams supporting each other and helping each other win, loss or draw. We will all take this into Doha and get some more Tries and wins under the belt. Nick, Assistant Coach, Sharks women.
