“We Love Our Church”
A Note from Mother Susan
Thanksgiving is traditionally a time to be… wait for it… THANKFUL! It seems pretty obvious,
doesn’t it? But is it obvious enough to guide us into taking a thankful approach to life, to our whole
life?
What are we truly thankful for? My family, my church family, friendships? I’ll bet each of us could
create a long list of the things we’re thankful for. But do we live each day with grateful hearts? Do we
allow the joy of simple, true gratefulness to fill us every morning as we rise? What a wonderful way to
start your day! The seeds of optimism can be found in gratitude, both specifically articulated gratitude
and just general gratitude.
Gratitude. Somehow the stomach settles. Nerves become quiet. Your breath steadies. Muscles you
didn’t even realize you were clenching tightly, release. Peaceful awareness flows out from your center.
You can calm like a pool of water.
A list of what we’re grateful for can be so DRY. Why not visualize the people you love? The places
you love? Why not imagine the sounds that give you peace? Waves reaching for a shore… Your favorite
piece of music… An old friend… Moments you may have thought made no sense but somehow keep
giving you joy, even more with repetition… A moment when your mind opened and you enjoyed the
simple childlike act of discovery.
I remember working on an Off-Broadway play in 1969 called “Approaching Simone.” The title
character sang a song about why God created us. The lyric that has always stuck with me was “I believe
God created so he could be loved.” I think that’s true.
We are such complicated creatures. Yet we are simple creatures too. Why would our creator go to all
the trouble of pulling together the compounds, drafting the mechanics, breathing the energy of life
into us, giving us the ability to learn, to remember, to laugh, in short, creating us, if we did not bring
joy, if we could not love? To God, even with our many flaws, we are delightful creatures.
How can we not be grateful to such a wonderful imagination!
How can we not appreciate such a great sense of humor?
How can we not strive to learn to return such love?
How can we not be thankful?
Blessings,
Mother Susan+

“Gratitude changes the pangs of memory into a tranquil joy.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
Gratitude changes the pangs of memory into a tranquil joy.”
I typed it twice - on purpose. I could type it several more times, I think.
November is a month that we celebrate Thanksgiving and all of us – all of us – have so much to be thankful for each day. The month has a built-in alarm to remind us about living in a state of gratitude and thankfulness.
But this quote haunts me. I am not yet where all my memories are related to joy! So, where was Dr. Bonhoeffer when he wrote this quote?
While imprisoned in Tegel for his faith, Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote to his fellow student and niece about the pangs of memory. It was Christmas Eve. War was imminent and their separation inevitable, but Bonhoeffer’s gratitude changed his sadness into joy. He went on to write, “The dearer and richer our memories, the more difficult the separation. But gratitude changes the pangs of memory into tranquil joy. The beauties of the past are borne, not as a thorn in the flesh, but as a precious gift in themselves.
Paul stressed throughout the book of Romans that we are forgiven and not living under condemnation. Now, that is something to be thankful for. May our Gratitude toward God “change your pangs of memory into tranquil joy”!

11/9 & 10 – Canned Vegetables
11/16 & 17 – Canned Soup
11/23 & 24 – Cereal
11/30 & 12/1 - Pasta
All donations are greatly appreciated and
accepted.
The Pitman Food Pantry is open on even dated
Tuesdays each month from 6pm – 7pm.
Altar Flowers and Sanctuary Candle
If you are interested in requesting Altar Flowers or the Sanctuary Candle in memory of someone or in thanksgiving, the forms are in the Parish Hall, on the back wall, on the Bulletin Board near the kitchen. Please fill out the appropriate form with your information for your desired date, as long as it is available, on the appropriate chart on the bulletin board. Please put completed form in Parish Administrator’s mailbox or under office door. We do not have flowers during Advent or Lent. The Sanctuary Candle is available year round.
PICTURES!
Let’s get in the habit of taking pictures of everything around here! Pictures of Sunday School, meetings, even of events at services if you can be surreptitious! Please identify who is in each photo and what the event is. Thank you!
Maryanne has received some great pics from people keep ‘em coming!
HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT PUTTING OUR BELOVED PARISH, GOOD
SHEPHERD, IN YOUR WILL?
Please Be Considerate of Our Neighbors!
We are so glad you're here! But when you park near the church, please be considerate of our neighbors and make sure you have fully cleared their driveways. Thank you!

OUTREACH
Thank you for the wonderful shoes and clothing that you
have been donating to the folks of Camden! We took
over 20 bags to St. Wilfrid’s to be distributed at their clinic
in October. They are always very grateful! They are in
desperate need of men’s shoes for the winter. PLEASE,
if you have any men’s shoes in good condition, consider
giving them to people who have none! If you have warm
weather clothing or shoes that you would like to donate,
please make sure that the items are in good condition
and place them in manageable size bags only. Leave
them on our front porch and we will be glad to deliver
them to Camden for you! We are located at 223
Highland Terrace in Pitman.

Contemplative Prayer Time
Before Our Worship Services
For those who seek a time for quiet prayer on Saturdays and Sundays, Mother Susan opens the church on Saturdays at 4:30 PM for the 5:30 PM service. Prayers for Parish Families For November
McCann family, McCartney family, McFadden family, and McIntire families
OUR PRAY-ERS MINISTRY
Each Sunday during Communion time, our team of Pray-ers offer prayers with our parishioners. We have now expanded this meaningful ministry to our Saturday evening Holy Eucharist at 5:30pm.
After you receive Holy Communion, if you want/need additional prayers, there will be a team of Pray-ers in the front of the Church who are willing to pray with you. These prayers can be offered in joy for a Blessing you have received, or can be to help ease a burden which lies on your heart. Please take advantage of this wonderful ministry of our parish. All prayers are confidential.
Anyone interested in being a Pray-er Minister at the Saturday night or Sunday services please contact Barbara Elliott @ 589-3980 or [email protected]
MORNING PRAYER
Morning Prayer is on Tuesday & Thursday mornings at
9 AM with Mother Susan in the chapel.
HEALING PRAYER
Mother Susan is now offering Healing Prayer with anointing and laying on of hands on the first Saturday of every month following the Saturday evening service.
Fall Clean-Up
Saturday, November 16th (Rain date November 23rd)
9:00 am - 12:00 noon
Please mark your schedules now and plan to come
out and help clean-up the Church & Rectory in
advance of the Holly Fair & Christmas season. We
need help with removing brush, pruning trees,
raking leaves and spreading mulch. No special
skills needed; just a willingness to dedicate a couple
of hours to YOUR Church!!!!!
Rakes, shovels and all tools will be provided, just
bring hand gloves. With a crew of a couple dozen
or so parishioners and family members, we can
complete all this in a couple of hours!
If interested, please sign up in the parish hall or
contact Beth Portocalis at [email protected]
or by phone or text to 856-357-3938.
Shawl/Caring Hands Ministry
Every so often we get a request for a Prayer Shawl to be given to someone in need. Sometimes it is during an illness, sometimes during grieving periods after the loss of a loved one. The Shawls are crocheted or knitted by the women in this ministry. Every other Tuesday morning you will find our Caring Hands Group knitting/crocheting the shawls in our Conference room. They are made with prayer for those who will receive them.
I can’t begin to tell you of the peace and comfort these shawls have brought to so many people. They need not be members of our parish. Need is spread everywhere.
If you know of a need, just ask Pat Braidwood

THURSDAY STUDY GROUP (Thursday mornings, 9:30-11 a.m.)
In November we will be using a program called
“Painting the Stars: Science, Religion and an
Evolving Faith.” This program features
scientists, biblical and theological scholars
across the world, including Gretta Vosper. It is
a seven-week program. Celebrating the
communion of science and faith “Painting the
Stars” explores the promise of evolutionary
Christian spirituality. Due to holidays, etc. the
meeting schedule will not be weekly. A
schedule will be given at the first class.
CONTEMPLATIVE GROUP (First and Third Wednesdays, 10-11 a.m.)
This group gathers to meditate/contemplate for 20 minutes in community. We then have a period of study and discussion. Currently we are using Fr. Richard Rohr’s presentation called The Naked Now which is based on his bestselling book of the same name. If you have never participated in a meditation/centering prayer/contemplative group before, simple instruction is given at the start of the session. It’s amazing how relaxing this time is – feel free to give it a try!
ADULT FORUM (First Sundays each month, 11:30 - 1 pm)
In November we will continue using a program featuring Marcus Borg, renowned New Testament Scholar. Embracing An Adult Faith - The third session focuses on
our understanding of Salvation. In this program Borg meets with a group of parishioners in a discussion on various topics. You can attend one or all of the upcoming months of this program.
(Note: We will not have an Adult Forum in December)
The Spirituality of the Twelve Steps - #11
“Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood God, praying only for knowledge of God’s will for us and the power to carry that out.”
While for some in AA, their High Power may be the rooms of AA or its people, for our purposes in this series, I want to focus on the higher power, or principle power we have named “GOD.”
Prayer and meditation is the primary way that we encounter God. Worship is a form of prayer – it’s our communal prayer. If we’re honest, for some it’s the only prayer contact they have with God. Oh, there may be quick “God, please do…., or “God, if you get me out of this fix I will do….” But that kind of prayer doesn’t build a relationship. Step Eleven calls us into developing a deep and trusting relationship with God.
One way to do that is meditation, or contemplation. This is what our Contemplative Group does every first and third Wednesday of the month at 10 a.m. We place ourselves in silence before God, inviting God into our being. This group has drawn people from our community who are seeking this deep relationship with God. In this form of prayer, God is able to heal our hearts and our minds.
The other focus of this Step is that having entrusted our lives and wills to God (Step Three) we practice this daily. We aren’t to give God a “Honey Do” list, but rather ask God what we’re called to do. Does this mean that we don’t lift people or situations in prayer? Not at all. It means we don’t tell God how to handle them. Are you ready to give up this control? It’s amazing what peace it will bring into your life.
St. Andrew’s Day Luncheon
The Brotherhood of Saint Andrew is pleased to invite everyone to a celebratory Luncheon following the Sunday 10AM service on Sunday, December 1, 2019. Lunch is on us to thank everyone for their support over the last year.
We hope you can join us!

Thank You God for Mail Order Catalogs (!)
By Alice Aultman
The mail has just arrived on schedule and along with the bills is something that some call “junk mail”. I call it a blessing. Catalogs showing special Holiday items and all sorts of possible gifts for those we want to remember.
I am not shopper. With my age I find it difficult to encounter the traffic, look for and find a parking space. Then go into the busy merchandise area and find what I might be looking for.
With a catalog I can be home quietly alone and carefully consider what I need. I can think about the item to determine if it is what I really need and then order it.
Of course there are downsides to this. One never knows what exactly will come. Catalog pictures are often deceptive and I find a tape measure a handy helper and careful reading is a must. I’m willing to accept the element of surprise for the comfort of home.
Thank You God for the convenience of catalogs for those of us that need a little help the Holiday season.
Family Quiz Bowl
We had our second annual Family Quiz Bowl on Friday, October 11th. It was a great success! Everyone had a good time. This year’s winners are The Brainy Bunch (Bathurst family, Beth and Chelsea Richmond).
The Kaltwallietos Team (Deb Prieto, Diane Wall, Jorge Prieto, Katherine Kaltwasser, Lauren Kaltwasser and Mark Wall).
TAIZÉ CONTEMPLATIVE SERVICE
Taizé Contemplative Service with Eucharist, Saturday, November 23 at 5:30 p.m. Join us for this time of quiet contemplation, chant and scripture readings, followed by the Holy Eucharist.
Treasurer's Blog - November 2019
Results for 9 months of 2019 Total Income: Here is a breakdown of our income for 9 months of 2019:
Budget Actual
Loose Plate 1,400 1,418 Envelopes 170,120 160,508
Special 4,350 4,702
Other 125 275
Income 175,495 166,903
Our envelope income is better than expected. It appears that many parishioners have been adding to their pledges and other contributors are giving at a greater amount. We had anticipated having a deficit of over $20,000 and it is only $8,592 for the nine months.
Thank you for your support during the summer months. We hope you will be able to provide continued support for 2019 and as we enter our stewardship campaign for 2020.
Total expenses: Here is a recap of our expenses for 9 months of 2019.
Budget Actual
Expenses 175,856 165,696
Our expenses have been lower than our estimates for this year due to gas heating that was lower, pension payments which are being adjusted by the Church Pension Group, not having a full-time organist for four months, and a few line items that were budgeted for but not having bills for yet.
CHURCH HISTORY DISPLAY
Thank you for all of the items that you have shared with our fellow parishioners over the past 5 years to be displayed in the glass case in the parish hall. As of now, the current exhibit will be the last one! I have no further items to display! It has been fun getting to know our collective past with all of you! Thanks so much!

STAINED GLASS WINDOW UPDATE
To date, approximately $4,500 has been raised towards our goal of $13,000 to make repairs to the altar window box and the three stained glass windows in need of immediate attention. However, during the process of obtaining quotes and vetting firms to do this work, it was discovered that the clerestory (upper) windows are leaking and are also in need of immediate replacement. The leaking has caused some cracks in the church; and has driven the project cost to $26,000. The Vestry is undertaking serious conversations on financing the needed repairs; and the Property Committee has spent countless hours in researching the stained glass firms and reviewing their reports and proposals. A Virginia firm, Epiphany Studios, has been recommended to the Vestry by the Property Committee. They have completed over 1,500 stained glass projects, including the National Cathedral, the Diocese in Trenton, and countless other churches and universities across the Country. We are still accepting pledges towards the stained glass windows. If you have misplaced the envelope mailed to you earlier this year, we do have more in the rear of the Church. You may also mail a pledge to the Church Office with the notation on the check for "Stained Glass Windows." Our stained glass windows represent a value to the Church of upwards of $800,000 in replacement costs. Their aesthetic value is incalculable. During the recent block party and open house, almost every person who toured the Church commented on the beauty and grace of the windows. I will keep you apprised of our progress, and thank you for thoughtfully considering a pledge towards this critical need.
Respectfully Submitted, Beth Portocalis, Junior Warden & Chair of the Property Committee

2019 CROP Walk
Gail Morton, Connie Parent, Roger Baker, Bobby Morton, Steve Mackay & Karen Mackay
I would like to thank everyone who participated with the Crop Walk by baking cookies, donating to a worthy cause and for walking in the pouring rain. We raised $287.50 at the cookie sale. This was the 50th Anniversary of the Crop Walk and the 39th year for Pitman/Glassboro's participation. All donations go to serve communities globally and locally (through Family Promise, Kitchen of Hope, Samaritan Center, Pitman Pantry and The Shop). It's not to late to donate, I am still collecting donations! Thank you for your support!

Rental Forms &
Special Events Checklist
The Vestry has adopted an updated Rental Form for Not for Profit outside groups who would like to rent the Parish Hall and/or classrooms. This includes birthday & anniversary parties, showers, community & civic meetings, instructional programs, etc. The new forms are available in the Parish Hall and will also be on the Church website as a Fill-in PDF form. All forms are to be submitted to the attention of our Claude Coulson, Event Coordinator. Also new is a Special Events Checklist Form to be utilized by Church ministry leaders when scheduling special event activities and functions such as paint nights, Quiz Bowl night, Progressive Dinners, and the like. The checklist is intended as a guide in planning events to insure all details required have been addressed, from Church availability to publicity. Claude Coulson has volunteered to act as the liaison to those in charge of organizing the event. The Special Event Checklist forms are also in the Parish Hall and on the Church website; and may be sent to Claude directly or left with Maryanne in the Church office. Claude may be contacted at [email protected] or via phone/text at 410-218-2877 for more information.

16th Annual Stockings for Soldiers Please Help Send Some Holiday Cheer to Our Troops!
Shelly Harris has put a large collection box in the back of the church. This will run from October 5th until November 17th.

Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel, Egypt, Qatar Kuwait, Jordan, Kosovo, Djibouti, Chad, Romania, South Korea and parts unknown.
Our project sent over 10,000 stockings filled with goodies last year. We want to continue to let them know we are thinking of them while they are away from home and their families.
