From the Senior Pastor —
“Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.”
Matthew 1:23
Dear people of LCDR,
As a child, I was fascinated with my grandparents’ Christmas Nativity Scene. Each year, my grandmother carefully unpacked it, placed it beneath the Christmas tree, and plugged it in so that the blue Christmas bulb made everything glow. I was so taken by it and its message of “God is with us,” that at six when I saw one for sale at Houston’s Hardware Store, I just had to spend my new birthday money and get one of my very own.
Yet today, that same Nativity Scene welcomes family and guests to our home, still with a warm blue glow, still announcing the Christmas good news of, “God is with us.”
“God is with us,” in the little child asleep on a manger filled with hay.
“God is with us,” in the angels announcing the birth of Christ the Lord among us.
“God is with us,” in the people: Joseph, Mary, shepherds and sages who have come from near and far to worship him.
“God is with us,” in the creatures: sheep and camels, donkeys and cattle and doves who huddle close to keep him warm.
“God is with us,” in the precious gifts that the sages (and we) give to honor the generous bounties of God.
“God is with us,” in an old blue Christmas bulb, the light that shines in the darkness, the Light of Christ come among us that from now to eternity no dark of night can ever extinguish.
May your Christmas this season be bright, be warmed with the love of gathered family and friends, and be filled with the hope of Christ, Emmanuel, “God is with us.”
In Christ,
Pastor Jeff Sorenson
December 2018
From the Associate Pastor —
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
“Do not be afraid, for see—I am bringing you good news
of great Joy for all people: to you is born this day in the
city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.”
Matthew 2:9-10
Blessed Christmas to each of you. We are each blessed
because of our baptism into this one who came to be our
Savior and Lord. I bring you this greeting now, for we will
not be here with you for Christmas.
We are leaving on November 27 for Salsbury, North
Carolina, where on December 2, I will be baptizing Kaden
Rey Thurow, our new great-granddaughter. This will be a
thrill for me. We have rented an apartment at Cary, NC for
the month of December. In January we will go to Florida
to visit a cousin who is dying with cancer. Then we will
come across to Alabama and Mississippi where we lived
for over 9 years and I served 4 interims. We will be back
home on January 16.
I am so blessed to have a contract with LCDR that
enables me to work with you in the ministry of the parish
and still be able to take off some time like this. I love you,
just as Jesus loves you, and will be looking forward to
returning to be with you in January.
On November 15, 10 of us with the Young at Heart group
went to LeMars, IA, to the Brown’s Dinner Theater. We
had great travels together in the church van, a great home
cooked meal, and a wonderful Christmas concert. So we
got a jump start on the rest of you in preparing for
Christmas. Young at Heart will not meet in December, but
we will be back for our pot-luck meal and some learning
on Thursday, January 17. The program is still being
worked on. In February the Lutheran Campus Pastor from
SDSU will be with us.
May the God of love, who has come to us, and is with us
every day, guide and direct you as we again celebrate
Jesus coming to us.
Pastor Eldon
A Study of the Apostles’ Creed
A 4-Week Study led by Pastor Jeff will conclude on Sunday, December 2
@ 9:45 am in Chapel Hall (Created for the Lutheran Church of Faith and
Hope in Nicaragua)
December 2—Session 4: The Third Article of the Apostles’ Creed, by Siri Sorenson, Grace Lutheran Church
The Young at Heart gathering will not be
gathering in December. Our pot luck
meal and learning will resume on
Thursday, January 17.
Budget Overview
As we near the end of 2018, the Church Council would like to address a few concerns regarding the church budget. The budget that was presented and voted on at our annual meeting in January had a $20,000 shortfall for income meeting expenses. Our hope at the time was to maintain expenses and to have income exceed our expectations.
We also budgeted income of $30,000 from the Lowell Ronning Estate money. This money is what is being used to fund Pastor Eldon's position. We made the decision early in 2018 to leave the money in the account for as long as possible to gain maximum interest. We plan to transfer the needed money from the estate in mid-December. If you have questions or concerns regarding the budget I encourage you to speak to myself or another church council member.
Thank you, Lisa Wilber (Treasurer)

December 26 No Youth Activities
From the Director of Youth and Worship:
The peace of Christ be with you all!
As the season of Advent is upon us, a time of hopeful anticipation for the coming of Christ at Christmas, I am reminded of the words John the Baptist spoke in the wilderness before Jesus came: “Prepare the way of the Lord”. We wait with hope in our hearts for the coming of not only Christmas this year, but for Jesus to come once again, and we are told to do so actively. Actively waiting is something most of us do on a daily basis (I do it every weekend when I vacuum while I wait for the laundry to wash), but what are we actively doing as we wait for Christ once more? How do we prepare his way? In the next coming four weeks, remember the words of John the Baptist as we approach the celebration of Messiah’s birth; “Prepare the way of the Lord”.
Remember that during the month of December normal Wednesday Activities will not be held due to Advent worship and soup suppers. Please come support our youth going to confirmation camp and Pine Ridge this summer and come join together in worship as we wait in hopeful anticipation for the birth of Jesus!

Sunday School Happenings
As I was sitting in church recently, just kind of
looking around, listening to the Praise band and
tapping my toes, a big smile just overtook me. I
walked downstairs and all the hustle and bustle
of the teachers getting ready for their lesson, the
classroom helpers waiting patiently for the kids
to arrive in their rooms.
During service, we’ve got a 5th grader reading the
lesson, two 8th graders acolyting. All these and
other volunteers in our congregation making it all
happen on Sunday morning…and even more
wonderful are the number kids who are involved!
I know that there are so many hands that help
Sunday mornings go smoothly, and you need to
know how much you are all appreciated!
As we are coming up on the Christmas season
and celebrating the birth of Jesus and the
excitement that brings to our church, I get the
same feeling thinking about all you volunteers
and all you do for our church…wow, just gives me
goose bumps! Have a blessed Christmas!
And He shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Might God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

LCDR,
The other day I was talking to a parishioner
about volunteering at church (we were trying
to figure out why more people don’t
volunteer… a never ending project). We
discussed reasons why we volunteer, and I
mentioned that I liked volunteering because it
gave me a chance to spend time with my
second family. Volunteering never felt like
work because of the people I spent my time
with.
This family has supported me in so many
different ways, and I am beyond grateful and
thankful. Thank you for your financial support,
and, also, all the words of encouragement.
Thank you to Pastor Jeff, Pastor Eldon and the
Council for their work in getting this set up.
Every day my prayer is that God will be seen in
me, and I can see God at work in this church
family.
In Him,
Jordan Stone
