The Shifting

River of Media

and Knowledge

NASA

With the

advent of the

internet,

media

platforms

have become

high speed

tunnels of

knowledge.

Designed Speed Snapchat achieves the

fastest speed by

having its content

available quickly and for

a maximum of 24 hours.

The speed of media

is determined by

how quickly the

information can flow

and how long it lasts.

News papers achieve

the slowest speed by

having content

thoroughly moderated,

while also creating

physical copies.

To this date, hard

copy media is the

longest lasting

media.

The link between social media and knowledge

One study conducted in the USA found that 80% of its respondents claimed that they use social media to seek out information and self-educate.

Facebook uses the “trending” section of their website

to link users to popular articles of media.

Twitter, by design allows for news to be

reported and shared first hand.

Snapchat is the fastest medium for news as it is

the simplest platform to post content on.

Instagram: a mix between Snapchat and Twitter can

be used for news but is not as efficient at doing

so, thus it is used far less for this purpose.

The shift in content delivery style

Because news is able to be shared almost immediately after an event, it is usually first reported on by the

general public in an unedited manner via social media. In the past, news stories were usually deeply analyzed

by journalists before hitting the eyes of readers.

pace gets replaced

Efficiency and replacement is a key factor in

lost sales of the newspaper market.

As digital media delivery gets more efficient, it quickly takes a cut out of the slower newspaper market.

In 2015, 43% of Americans used a combination

of Facebook and Twitter for their news.

as time goes on,

the rate of people

obtaining news

through social

media is growing.

To combat this,

News publishers

are beginning to

push news to

multiple

platforms in

combination with

their own.

NEWS ORGANIZATION

"Is The Media Becoming A Wire Service?". Vox. N.p., 2015. Web. 19. 2016.

The diversification of news platforms creates

space for the “wire-fication” of media.

Wire-fication of media:

When something happens, the news is pushed straight to everyone’s devices, no

matter the platform.

The Young Turks: Wire-fication

Journalism and Wire-fication:

Journalists in today’s market must be proficient in all forms of social media in order to push their work to the most

consumers.

The Next stages of media

consumption

As new media platforms and devices are created, the old wires of media will be replaced

by the new ones, but the fast paced tendencies of society will continue to herd media within the

bounds of wire-fication.

Outdated mediums

created by efficiency shifts

are left in stagnant user ponds, slowly

drying up along side a river of

fast paced media…
