“If you have a private well orquestion the quality of yourlivestock water, this is a greatopportunity to have it screened byExtension water quality specialistsat no charge,” says RoxanneJohnson, NDSU Extension waterquality associate.

Samples should be collected inany clean plastic bottle capableof holding 15 to 20 ounces.To obtain your sample, you shouldallow the water run for 30 secondsand then rinse the bottle threetimes before filling, according toJohnson.

Substances that Extensionspecialists will test for on siteinclude nitrates and totaldissolved solids. They’ll also testfor pH (acidity or alkalinity) andhardness. This is a screening only.The New Ulm, Minn.-basedMinnesota Valley TestingLaboratories also is offering totest water for a coliform group ofmicroorganisms that includes E.coli. Johnson will have sterilebottles for you to take home tocollect the sterile sample and thensend to the Minnesota ValleyTesting’s laboratory in Bismarck.The cost for this test is $8 and

Johnson says the sample forthis test contains a chlorineinhibitor, so do not rinse thecontainer prior to use.

Here are the steps to followwhen collecting a sample for thetest:· Remove the aerator from yourfaucet if it has one.· Sterilize the end of the faucetwith a flame.· Remove the bottle cap, takingcare not to touch the inside of thecap or container.· Run the water for 30 secondsto remove stagnant water from thesystem.· Fill the bottle to the lineindicated or near the top.· Immediately replace the bottlecap and refrigerate.

Specimens should be analyzedwithin 36 hours, so collect yoursample close to the time you willmail it. Make sure to mail it earlyin the week, such as a Monday,Tuesday or Wednesday, so it willreach the lab prior to the weekend.Bacteriological results will be sentto you from NDSU as soon aspossible.

Responsible for teaching courses in Communication currently offered at WSC

such as Fundamentals of Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, and Oral

Interpretation. Expand interest and offerings in the communication area.

Additional experience and qualifications for teaching in at least one other area of
