For the past few week-ends, I've had the chance to watch some old sports movies with my nephews — whom I refer to as the minions — or, I should say, I watch them watch movies. One week it was " e Babe" with John Goodman, and the other day "Space Jam."

I didn't like " e Babe." e guy's life already read like fiction — there was really no need to make up more stu about him. I'm not going to get into the specifics, but they took

some liberties with the timeline and they foisted a few of the urban legends on him that weren't true (like the Yankees wore pinstripes because he was fat). So a er the movie, using the wonders of the web, I showed my nephew what the real Babe looked like.

"He's not fat, he's just really big!" Exactly. Now watch the guy hit. He may not have hit .390 today or 61 homers every year, but trust me, Babe Ruth would very much be an All-Star in today's game as well.

"Space Jam" is another

relic of the '90s. I didn't watch the whole thing, but the parts I did catch made me happy that they will get to know Bill Murray more than anything. Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Toons crew de nitely had lost their touch by this time, but they still were getting laughs. The one thing I wanted to empha-size to the kids was that no matter what anybody said about Oscar Robertson or Wilt Chamberlain or Kobe or Lebron James, the person they were watching struggle through each of his lines was the greatest basketball player of all-time.

To say that Michael Jordan dominated his era is indisputable. But what sets him apart from all the other all-time greats is the fact that he played with a style that nobody could really duplicate — or at least has not since. ere

have been great players to be sure, but not like Mike.

Trying to explain this to my nephew sounded a little like this: "You know how when guys dunk, they jump up in the air and y to the basket? Well, when Jordan jumped up in the air, he ew around for a while like those trick planes you saw at the air show, then he would veer le and alter-nate his trajectory and vectors and stu , and then he would dunk. No ques-tion, he was the best."

"I have a question," said one.

"What's that?""What's a trajecty?" at's a good question.

It's always good to take a look back.

The Sandoval FFA Chapter recently volun-teered at the Monsanto sponsored Agricultural Safety Day event. e event was hosted for h through seventh grade students in the Centralia area. Over 500 young students were at the event to learn more about ATV safety, Power take o safety, tractor safety, ladder safety, hearing safety, chemical safety, the proper way to call JULIE before digging and much more.

The Sandoval FFA Members were able to volunteer by leading the groups of students to each station and assist-ing with the specific

stations. While this event was for junior high students, the Sandoval FFA members were able to learn many skills, too, that they will use in their everyday lives. FFA makes a pos-

itive di erence in the lives of students by de-veloping their potential for premiere leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.

The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to help their com-munities prepare for emer-gencies by giving blood d u r i n g N a t i o n a l Preparedness Month this September.

Becoming a regular blood donor is one way to help ensure communities are prepared for any emer-gency, including those where blood transfusions are needed. e Red Cross also encourages the public to get prepared by making a disaster plan for their homes or work places.

A sufficient blood supply is central to ensur-ing hospitals are prepared to meet patient needs in times of disaster, including the very personal ones that can happen any day. Because blood takes about 48 hours to be tested, pro-cessed and made available for patients, it’s the blood already on the shelves that can help save the day when emergencies occur.

is month also marks the sixth year that the Red Cross and Sport Clips Haircuts have teamed up to help increase blood do-nations. Through the “Saving Lives Never Looked So Good” cam-paign, Sport Clips is thank-ing those who come to give blood in September with a coupon for a free haircut at participating Sport Clips locations. e coupon is valid through Nov. 8, 2015, and will be sent to donors

via email a few days a er their donation.

Fresh herbs enhance foods in a way that's unmatched by any other ingredient. As long as I can remember I've put in a herb garden, and I put it to good use through the summer months. In the fall I dry what's le in the garden and use the herbs all winter. But keep in mind, many dried herbs are available in the spice section of the grocery store. Some of my favorite recipes are below.

Focaccia With Fresh Herbs(Italian Pizza And Hearth Bread)

is is a pizza-like atbread avored with herbs and olive oil. Use herbs associated with Italian cuisine, such as oregano, basil and rosemary, in any combination. I love to combine basil with a little mozzarella cheese and thinly sliced tomatoes.

1/2 tsp. active dry yeast 1/2 tsp. salt1/2 tsp. sugar 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil3/4 cup very warm (105°-110°F) water 2 T. fresh herb leaves2¾ cups unbleached or all-purpose our 1/2 tsp. kosher, or coarse, saltSprinkle yeast and sugar into 1/2 cup very warm water. Let stand about 10 minutes, or until surface

becomes bubbly. In large bowl, combine our and salt. Make a well in center. Pour in yeast mixture and 1 T. olive oil. Stir well with wooden spoon or electric mixer. Continuing to stir, slowly add 1/4 cup very warm water. Dough will be so and slightly sticky. Turn dough out onto very lightly oured surface. Knead for 10 minutes, adding a small spoonful of our only if absolutely necessary. Put dough in warm (80°-85°F) place, loosely cover with plastic wrap sprayed with nonstick cooking spray or a damp cloth, and let rise until doubled in bulk, or about 1 hour. Turn dough out onto lightly oured surface and knead gently several times, then atten out to a 10" circle. Place on an oiled baking stone, pizza pan or heavy cookie sheet. Press indentations with ngers to give it dimples. Loosely cover and let rise in warm place about 45 minutes, or until doubled in bulk. Heat oven to 425°F. Combine 3 T. olive oil and herbs in food processor, blender, or mortar and pestle until leaves are broken up and oil is fragrant. Pour herb-oil mixture over focaccia and rub gently into the surface. Sprinkle top with salt. Bake 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 400°F and bake 5 minutes more, or until golden brown. Let cool and cut into wedges. Yield: One 10" bread.

White Beans With Tomatoes, yme, Savory And Tarragon1 lb. white kidney or Great Northern beans 2 T. Worcestershire sauce1/4 cup canola oil 5 cups vegetable stock or canned3 cups chopped yellow onions vegetable broth6 garlic cloves, crushed 2½ pounds tomatoes, peeled, seeded,1 bay leaf and chopped5 (4") sprigs fresh thyme 3 T. chopped fresh tarragon leaves3 (4") sprigs fresh savory 1/4 cup lemon juice4 whole cloves 1 tsp. salt1/2 cup dry white wine 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper1/4 cup white wine vinegarSoak dried beans 12 hours in large bowl of cold water that covers them by at least 4 inches. Change

water once, a er 6 hours. Heat oil in large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onions and garlic, and cook, stirring, about 8 minutes, or until so . Stir in bay leaf, thyme, savory and cloves, and cook 2 to 3 more minutes, or until herbs are fragrant. Add beans, wine, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, stock or broth, and enough water to cover beans by 2 inches. Bring to boil, skim o foam, and reduce heat to low. Cover and cook until beans are tender, or about 2 hours. Stir in tomatoes, turn up heat to medium-high, and cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add tarragon and cook 3 minutes. Add lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Serve immediately. Yield: 8 servings

Roast Pork Loin Stu ed With Dried Apricots, Shallots And Sage4 T. canola oil 1/2 cup brandy1 lb. dried apricots, cut into 1/4" pieces 2 cups orange juice 2 T. chopped shallots 1½ cups coarse dry bread crumbs4 scallions, cut into 1/4" slices 2 large eggs, lightly beaten, or 1/2 cup egg substitute1/3 cup raisins 4- to 5-lb. boneless pork loin, trimmed 1 T. chopped fresh sage leaves Heat oven to 500°F. Heat 2 T. canola oil in skillet over medium-high heat and stir in apricots, shal-

lots, scallions, raisins and sage. Cook about 2 minutes, or until sage is fragrant. Stir in brandy and simmer 1 minute. Stir in 1 cup orange juice, bring to boil, lower heat to medium, and reduce liquid by one-third. Remove from heat and stir in bread crumbs. Let cool. Stir in eggs. Cut pork loin in half lengthwise, leaving one side attached. Fold open and cut out a trough about 1" deep and 2" wide in center of each half. Fill troughs with bread crumb mixture. Fold the two halves together and tie with kitchen string. Heat remaining 2 T. oil in large ovenproof skillet or roasting pan over high heat. Add pork loin and brown on all sides. Pour in remaining 1 cup orange juice. Transfer to oven and cook 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350°F. Basting every 20 minutes, cook for 1½ hours. Remove from oven and let stand 10 minutes. Cut into 1" slices and serve with pan juices. Yield: 8 to 10 servings.

Grilled Shrimp With Citrus And Herbs2 limes, thinly sliced 1 tsp. dried hot red pepper akes1 lemon, thinly sliced 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced3 T. olive oil 10 (4-inch) sprigs of fresh herbs2 T. Galliano or anisette liqueur 2½ lbs. large shrimp, in the shell1 T. tequilaCombine all ingredients in large bowl or dish, cover, and refrigerate 4 to 6 hours, stirring occasion-

ally. Prepare grill. Remove shrimp from marinade, place on metal skewer, and grill about 2 minutes on each side. Both sides should be red and center of head end opaque. Yield: 4 servings.

While having lunch with a friend, Richard Freeman of Salem, we were comparing notes on the recent poll numbers, especially on the top two GOP candidates, Donald Trump and Dr. Ben Carson, with Trump number one and Carson catching up fast. I made the comment that I really liked Dr. Ben Carson and noted his common sense and intelligence, but that he is very so spoken, which concerned me. Richard re-minded me quickly of an old phrase that he believed t Carson: "Speak softly and carry a big stick."

When reminded, it made me look at the doctor di er-ently, but it also reminded me of so many of Obama's red lines and what the opposite has done for our country. In other words, "Talk tough and don't carry a stick." Look where it's gotten us! Nowhere!

However, back to the widespread use of the rst saying. "Speak softly and carry a big stick" began with American President eo-dore Roosevelt. In a letter to Harry L. Sprague, on January 26, 1900, he wrote, "Speak so ly and carry a big stick; you will go far."

e "Big Stick" ideology refers to Roosevelt's foreign policy. He described his style as "the exercise of intelligent forethought and of decisive action in advance of any likely crisis."

In other words, beware, you have been forewarned, just the opposite of Obama's foreign policy.

Roosevelt used military muscle severa l t imes throughout his two terms. This included the Great White Fleet, 16 battle ships which peacefully circum-navigated the globe as an il-lustration of America's rising yet neutral prestige under his direction.

And at the end of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905

Roosevelt leveraged his posi-tion as a strong but impartial leader in order to negotiate a peace treaty between the two nations. "Speaking softly" earned the President a Nobel Peace Prize the following year for his e orts.

So with all that said, and not being a fan of Trump, if he's the chosen one for the GOP, I'm not ashamed to say I'll hold my nose and vote for Trump before I'll vote for Clinton!

However, I hope it's someone like Ben Carson, or Marco Rubio or even Ted Cruz, hopefully all capable of speaking so ly but carrying a big stick.

On to the crisis of refugees. More than half are eeing from Syria.

Right now, Europe is facing the largest migrant crisis since WWII. More than 364,000 have arrived as of last week. But let's go back to what started this mass exodus. As much as I'm against war and was against Bush for sending troops in to Iraq because of misinforma-tion, I was more against Obama pulling all troops out of Iraq a er he took o ce. Iraq was stabilized, and in order to keep it that way, troops should have remained. A prime example would be South Korea. This move, which he was advised against, created a huge vacuum. Enter the movement and beginning of ISIS. And by the way, Clinton was part of this brainless action. Fast for-warding ahead: is govern-ment — Obama, with Clin-ton's help — went in and decapitated Libya's govern-ment in the same time frame. en President Muammar Gaddafi was murdered. ere's no doubt he was a tyrant, but Libya wasn't better o a er our intervention, but rather worse o . It opened up everything from gun running

to the tragedy of Benghazi. And to make matters worse, Russia is the biggest sup-porter of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria, and you can be assured Iran is also behind a lot of this chaos. And what do we do? We make a deal with Iran, a country that wants to destroy Israel and the U.S. as well!

What a mess! Just before press time, Russia was calling on other nations to help arm the Syrian government, de-scribing it as the most e -cient force against ISIS. No wonder the Syrian people are eeing.

I'm the first to say this country is war weary. But I also believe there is a time for all things. Read Ecclesiastes Chapter 3, Verses 1 through 22, especially Verse 8: "A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace."

In listening to Hillary lay out her plans for Syria, I thought too bad she wasn't smart enough to have a plan before the gates of Hell in the Middle East were opened (with her help as then Secretary of State).

e biggest mistake is you don't draw red lines and not follow through. is admin-istration has done just the opposite of "Speak so ly and carry a big stick."

A nal thought: ISIS is not just an enemy; it's a move-ment and will need to be taken out in the area where it began, and air strikes won't do it!

Until next week.

By the Word of their Testimony

Public enemy number one doesn’t have a poster hanging in the post o ce nor is he on the most wanted list of the FBI. Public enemy number one is more insidious, danger-ous, and deceptive than any criminal or terrorist. Jesus called him the thief who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. (John 10:10) In Revelation 12 he is referred to as the great dragon, the serpent of old, called the devil and Satan, “who de-ceives the whole world.” (Revelation 12:7) Satan, who is called, “the accuser of our brethren,” will very soon be cast out of the heavens. We are given this warning, “Therefore, rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them. Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows he has a short time.” (Revelation 12:10-12)

God has enabled His fol-lowers to overcome the

onslaught of the devil, the accuser, with three power-ful weapons. “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony and they did not love their lives to the death.” (Revelation 12:11) e rst weapon that defeats the devil and the power of sin is “the blood of the lamb.” rough the blood of the lamb, Jesus Christ, atonement for sin was made. e power of sin and death was defeated. e second weapon “the word of our testimony,” is how the power of the blood of Christ is activated in one’s life and situation. e third weapon, “they did not love their lives to the death,” is the pathway of disciple-ship for all followers of Christ. e word of your testimony can defeat the devil and route the enemy. Consider these aspects of the power of your testi-mony.

TESTIFY TO THE POWER OF THE BLOOD. e early believers over-came the accuser by testify-ing to the e cacy of the

blood of Jesus. When the devil points out your sins to you, point him to the cleansing blood of Jesus shed on the cross. Testify to the promises of God’s Word. (I John 1:7; Romans 8:25; Colossians 1:14; I Peter 1:2, 19; Revelation 1:5; 12:11) David prayed for cleansing from sin. (Psalm 51:7-10) David referred to the hyssop plant by which the Israelites applied the blood of the lamb to the doorposts of their homes, just as the power of the blood of Christ provides cleansing for believers.

TESTIFY TO THE POWER OF THE LORD-SHIP OF CHRIST OVER YOUR LIFE. e devil has no power over a surren-dered life. Have you sur-rendered your life totally to the Lord Jesus Christ? We are given this secret to de-feating the accuser. “And loved not their lives to the death.” (Revelation 12:11) Confess Jesus as Lord. (Romans 10:9) Jesus called the rich young ruler to sell everything he had, give it to the poor, “and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross and follow me.” (Mark 10:21) Is your treasure in heaven or on earth? Someone said, “He is Lord of all or not at all.” Examine the people that Jesus called. They left everything to follow Christ. (Romans 12:1-2) Testify to the Lord-ship of Christ.

TESTIFY TO WHAT THE LORD HAS DONE IN YOUR LIFE. e power of a personal testimony speaks volumes and gets people’s attention. The apostle Paul constantly shared his testimony of his Damascus road experience and how he was converted into a follower of Christ. You may not have had a dramatic Damascus road experience, but if you have had a born again life chang-ing experience with Christ, God will use your testi-mony to touch and encour-age others. e power of your personal testimony will strengthen your faith, bless others, and defeat the devil. “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.” (Psalm 107:2)

If the accuser of the brethren, the devil, is pushing you around, use these three powerful weapons — the blood of the Lamb, the word of your testimony, and not loving your life, even until death.

Preparing Pets for Disaster

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Here in Florida, we’re urged to have a hurricane pre-paredness plan between June and November, which is traditionally hurricane season. But often emer-gency o cials forget about pets. Can you remind readers to include their pets in any disaster planning? ings can happen really fast, and pets are o en for-gotten and put at risk. — Larry in Deer eld Beach, Florida

D E A R L A R R Y : Absolutely! We’ve seen in past natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina that our pets can su er greatly if no plan is in place for them. Dogs and cats cannot fend for themselves a er a disas-ter.

Di erent regions of the country can experience dif-ferent issues, too. For example, the Northeast had one of its coldest, snowiest winters in almost two cen-turies this year. Roofs col-lapsed, people had trouble heating their homes and many seniors, o en with pets, were stuck indoors for days on end. It was a di er-ent kind of disaster, but no less stressful for those who were displaced or su ered health issues.

The Humane Society (www.humanesociety.org), American Red Cross (www.redcross.org/prepare/loca-tion/home-family/pets), Ready.gov (www.ready.gov/caring-animals) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (www.cdc.gov/features/petsanddisas-ters/) all have detailed in-formation to help you prepare pets in case you have to quickly evacuate your home.

Guidelines include but aren’t limited to: making sure your pets’ vaccinations are up to date and that they wear ID tags, license and

ideally are microchipped; having a pet carrier for each pet; adding pet supplies, medications and extra leashes and collars to your

disaster kit; and keeping a copy of all pet records with your critical family docu-ments.

Depression Glass

Q: I have inherited ve pieces of Depression Glass, but have no idea of the pattern. My mom thinks the pattern is from the 1930s. I am enclosing some pictures and hope you can help me. — Betty, Sun City West, Arizona

A: Your Depression Glass isn't as old as you thought. The pattern is Forest Green and was manufactured by Anchor Hocking Glass Company during the early 1950s. It is a common pattern and typical prices are a goblet, $10; mixing bowl, $11; and a cup, $7.50. e company was located in both Lan-caster, Ohio, and Long Island City, New York.

Q: I have more than 1,000 78-rpm records. Ev-eryone tells me they have no value. I've been to all of the antiques shops in my area and have not found anyone interested in them. — Greg, via e-mail

A: I get dozens of letters such as yours each month, and the answer is always the same. Old 78-rpm discs are di cult to sell because it is almost impossible to nd turntables with the ap-propriate speed and needle. I recommend you try your luck on eBay.

***Q: I have a small collec-

tion of about a dozen fruit jars that are early and unusual. How can I nd out how much they are worth? — Sam, Spring Branch, Texas

A: Bill Schroeder is one of the foremost authorities of fruit jars, and his ni y price guide is considered a classic. "1000 Fruit Jars Priced and Illustrated" is user-friendly and should be helpful. It is $5.95 and available in print or eBook. You can access it by calling 1-800-626-5420, or writing Collector Books, P.O. Box 3009, Paducah, Kentucky 42002.

***Q: I prowl garage and

estate sales, and am espe-cially interested in silver and ceramics. Can you recom-

mend a pocket guide to help me identify marks? — Barbara, Santa Fe, New Mexico

A: Judith Mil ler 's "Antique Marks" features more than 6,000 marks to identify silver, ceramics, glass and other assorted treasures. It is $9.99 and ts in the pocket. You can order a copy at amazon.com.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Care-ful, Lamb. Taking on too many tasks at one time can cause you to create more snarls each time you try to work your way through the tangled mass. Best to handle one job at a time.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Mak-ing bold moves is what Bovines do. But the best moves are made with lots of data to provide backup just in case you charge into an unexpected com-plication. A new relationship shows promise.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Sharing credit for a job well done is easy for you to do, but not necessarily for your partner. But fair is fair. Don’t let your-self be denied the right to have your contributions recognized.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Com-munication is important to help bridge a gap that can lead to problems at home and/or at the workplace. Find a way to get your points across before the breach becomes a chasm.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Relation-ships, whether business or personal, need to be watched carefully for signs of trouble. Any negative indications should be dealt with before they be-come too burdensome.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Congratulations. A more positive aspect highlights much of the Virgo’s week. You should nd others more receptive to your suggestions, and also more likely to act on them.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) All work and little play could wear the

Libra’s usually positive attitude down. Take some much-needed time o . Perhaps a short jaunt with someone special is the way to go.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) is is a good time to expand your view from the known to the unfamil-iar. Confronting new situations could be challenging, but ultimately also could be extremely satisfying.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to De-cember 21) Giving advice to those who just want validation for what they’re doing can be unsettling. So back o and save your counsel for those who really appreciate it.CAPRICORN (December 22 to Janu-ary 19) Cultivating a more positive attitude not only makes you feel better about yourself, but also has an upbeat e ect on those around you, especially that certain someone.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Keeping the lines of communica-tion open and accessible is the key to establishing the right foundation on which to build an important and meaningful relationship. Stay with it.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Before agreeing to act on a request, consider using your perceptive Piscean talents to see what might lie hidden beneath its surface and could possibly cause problems later on.BORN THIS WEEK: You’re a friend who, if you err at all, does so on the side of concern for those you care about.

are not for the jealous type. In that country, tra-dition states that if the bride leaves the room, all the men line up to kiss her. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, though — if the groom leaves, all the women are supposed to get in line to demonstrate their a ection. I imagine very few exes are invited to Swedish weddings.

In a test, the birds were placed in cages side-by-side, then one was removed and a mirror put in its place. e parakeet that was le spent qua-druple the time looking at its re ection as it did looking at its companion.
