Passion Week

This Sunday, the Fifth Sunday of Lent, was traditionally called “Passion Sunday.” After the joy of Laetare Sunday, the Church entered more deeply into the Lenten season by considering more intensely the Passion of our Lord. Passion Week then, of course, leads into Holy Week, the commemoration of Jesus’s suffering, death and Resurrection. We are coming closer and closer to the holiest week of the Church’s liturgical year.

One of the features of Passion Sunday is that we cover the statues of Christ and the saints with violet veils. A few years ago a friend sent me this explanation of the veiling of the images of Christ and the saints. He found it in the Catholic Encyclopedia of 1917.

The crosses are veiled because Christ, during this time, no longer walked openly among the people, but hid himself. Hence in the papal chapel the

veiling formerly took place at the words of the Gospel: "Jesus autem abscondebat se." Another reason is added by Durandus, namely

that Christ's divinity was hidden when he arrived at the time of His suffering and death. The images of the saints also are covered because it would seem

improper for the servants to appear when the Master himself is hidden (Nilles, "Kal.", II, 188).

Another explanation I heard for the veiling of the crosses and images came from my father when I was a child. He explained that the hidden images reminded us that there were no saints in heaven until Jesus opened the way to heaven by His death and resurrection. Until that salutary event, the holy people lived in peace but had not yet seen the Face of God. Their images are veiled in church because they were “veiled” from the presence of God until Christ rose from the dead. That is the meaning of the phrase in our Creed, “he descended among the dead.” He entered into their realm to bring them into heaven. As we look upon the veiled images in church these next two weeks, we are reminded that our hearts and minds are veiled from God also. We live as pilgrims here on earth because our true home is in heaven. Our intellect, our will, our hearts are darkened to greater and lesser degrees because we do not see God face-to-face as He really is. We live for the day when we can see God as He really is and enjoy His presence forever. The Passion of our Lord enables us to see God, to live with Him forever and to enjoy His friendship. In short, the Passion opens for us the “gates to heaven.” Let us enter into Christ’s Passion prayerfully and liturgically so that we may share with joy in His Resurrection. Semana de La Pasión

Este domingo, el quinto domingo de Cuaresma, se llamaba tradicionalmente "Domingo de la Pasión". Después de la alegría del domingo de Laetare, la Iglesia entró más profundamente en el

tiempo de Cuaresma al considerar más intensamente la Pasión de nuestro Señor. La Semana de la Pasión conduce entonces, por supuesto, a la Semana Santa, la conmemoración del sufrimiento, la

muerte y la Resurrección de Jesús. Nos acercamos cada vez más a la semana más Santa del año litúr-gico de la Iglesia.

Una de las características del Domingo de la Pasión es que cubrimos las estatuas de Cristo y

los santos con velos violetas. Hace unos años un amigo me envió esta explicación del velo de las imá-genes de Cristo y de los santos. Lo encontró en la Enciclopedia Católica de 1917.

Las cruces están veladas porque Cristo, durante este tiempo, ya no caminó

abiertamente entre el pueblo, sino que se escondió a sí mismo. Por lo tanto, en la capilla papal el velo tuvo lugar antes a las palabras del Evangelio: "Jesús autem abscondat se". que nuestros corazones y mentes también están velados por Dios. Vivimos como peregrinos aquí en la tierra porque nuestro verdadero hogar está en el cielo. Nuestro intelecto, nuestra voluntad, nues-tros corazones se oscurecen en mayor y menor grado porque no vemos a Dios cara a cara como Él es realmente. Vivimos para el día en que podemos ver a Dios como Él es realmente y disfrutar de Su presencia para siempre.

La Pasión de nuestro Señor nos permite ver a Dios, vivir con Él para siempre y disfrutar de Su

amistad. En resumen, la Pasión nos abre las “puertas al cielo”. Entramos en la Pasión de Cristo con oración y litúrgicamente para que podamos compartir con alegría Su Resurrección.
