“When do I bow, and why do some people fully prostrate?”
“Can I learn some of the songs we’ll sing?”
“What am I supposed to do during the Priestly Blessing? And what are the Kohanim (priests) doing under their tallitot, anyway?”
“And how exactly do you sound the shofar, because I’d like to try to see if I could do it.”
These questions will be the focus of the High Holiday prep classes that Rabbi Shafrin and I will be teaching this year. There’s a long custom of preparing in the Hebrew month of Elul (the month that precedes Tishrei and Rosh Hashanah) for the High Holidays. Sometimes we prepare spiritually, or learn the rules of holidays, or focus on some of the special prayers for that holiday, or the narrative of the holiday.
This year, we’ll focus on practicalities, on four consecutive Wednesday evenings at 7pm, beginning August 28.
Our first session will be “How to Sound the Shofar--for beginners, experts and anyone in between” (with Rabbi Shafrin). We are in need of people to sound the shofar at all our services this year, including every weekday morning during Elul. Come learn how to sound the shofar, some of the rules involved, and start practicing now so you’re ready for Rosh Hashanah!
On September 4, our topic will be “The Priestly Blessing: A How-To for Kohanim, Levites and Israelites”
(with Rabbis Shafrin and Arnow). All of our Kohanim are invited to a refresher about what to do under the tallit, Levites can have a quick review of proper handwashing procedures, and Israelites can learn about what the Kohanim and Levites are doing,
choreography-related questions, this session on September 11 (with Rabbi Arnow) is for you! People with all kinds of mobility are welcome.
This year, we anticipate using many of the same melodies we’ve used in the past several years, but there will also be a couple of new melodies. Join us to learn some new melodies, review newish melodies, and sing some old favorites on Wednesday, September 18 (with Rabbi Arnow).

The membership committee meets all year to create programs for our Kol Rinah family. We are part of the High Holiday planning to greet long time members and welcome new faces. We sponsor the New Member Shabbat for those who have joined within the year. We add to the fun and frolic of Purim with our “after parties”. We celebrate holidays with a variety of educational and entertaining evenings aimed for our “Boomer age” congregants (read ‘sans children’). But we are here to support programming for all ages and interests. Our main goal is to make our synagogue a comfortable and engaging place whether it be at a Shabbat or holiday service or a social gathering or an educational event.
Since our last New Member Shabbat in November we have welcomed Skylar and Zeke Swim, Linda Carton, Ron and Bette Abeles, Leora Spitzer, Serralesa Ivener and Alex Befeler and family, Debra Horwitz, Joel and Leah Frankel and son Elijah with a colorful, fruitful gift basket filled with different treats and greetings from the congregation. The Young Families committee also welcomed 12 of our ‘brand new members’ born this year.
Purim this year was turned into one big Shpiel – from the Megillah reading
itself to the PopUp party afterwards. Tu Bishvat found us dining on many kinds of nuts and fruits from the Holy Land during our Tu Bishvat Seder, along with wines and food for a complete Shabbat dinner.
Our next task is to help with the exciting move-in plans in September. We’d like to create a time capsule so we will be looking for contributions from you.
There are several summer gatherings planned by other committees that we support and hope you will, too. Information is available in the newsletter and on the website or on Facebook. It is important these days to show our commitment to our communal Jewish home and our Jewish way of life in general. Your presence is welcome and significant. Together we make a strong statement of faith and continuity.
The membership committee is open and eager to hear from you on any matter of importance to you.

You could call this an example of how one thing leads to another. Mary Ellen (Mem) Movshin, an active member of Kol Rinah, was volunteering at Central Reform Congregation. She was there as a docent to explain Judaism to visiting non-Jewish groups. She impressed a group (5 busloads of students and faculty) from Greenville University, in Greenville Illinois, with her respectful and sensitive responses to their questions.
A few words about Greenville U. It is one of 5 colleges run by the 260,000 Free Methodists in the U.S. This branch of Christianity is interested in Judaism as an independent religion, and not as an antecedent to Jesus’ teachings. The school had started a new Jewish/Christian Studies Program in 2018.
After the docent meeting, the Greenville U. faculty later called Mem for resources on Judaism. The conversation led to
Mem teaching several sessions there, one to students and one to faculty. It was these interactions that lead Mem to ask if the school wanted to display and learn about a Torah and its accoutrements. Aubrey McLain, the head of the program, agreed.
After getting permission from Kol Rinah, Mem brought a pasul (non-kosher) Torah, mantle, breastplate, and several yads (pointers) to the school. These were installed in a glass viewing case, and a reception was held with refreshments from Kohn’s restaurant. The Jewish items were on display there from April 9 to June 11.
A few words more about Mem. She is studying for the rabbinate under the auspices of Aleph, the Alliance for Jewish Renewal. She expects to receive rabbinic ordination (smicha) in January 2020.

It is summer and it feels like summer! We are in the midst of our annual Honey from the Heart campaign, to send jars of honey to your family and friends. We celebrated Mother’s Day and Father’s Day with our members coming to Craft Central to make gifts for family members. We had a lovely event there for Mother’s Day, but while we were a little disappointed that more children didn’t come to the event, the adults had a great time together. We were thrilled when on June 2 many more families were able to come to have a wonderful time together and create beautiful and artistic gifts! Sisterhood was excited to sponsor this!
Mazel tov and thank you to Wendy Love Anderson and Jeremy Buhler for having Sisterhood provide the Kiddush luncheon for the beautiful bat mitzvah of their daughter Rena. Family and friends and the entire congregation were proud of her. Also mazel tov and thank you to Lauren Buchsbaum and Nick Riggio for the kiddush celebrating the 45th anniversary of her bat mitzvah, and their 2nd wedding anniversary.
We are also looking forward to providing several more Sisterhood kiddushes, with a thank you to Steve and Nancy Keyser for their lovely and generous Faye Keyser Memorial Kiddush luncheons to take place on
June 15, July 27 and August 24. We have also been asked to provide the Kiddush luncheon for the bat mitzvah of Grace Kalina on August 31, and look forward to her bat mitzvah, the last at our Hanley location.
On a personal level, we thank the Sisterhood for allowing us to attend the IntraContinental Sisterhood Conference, held this year in Dallas. As new presidents it was good for us to meet many who have been doing this for many years to get advice and pointers to bring back to Kol Rinah. We were proud of our own Cindy Ginsburg, the President of the Region, and learned much from the varied presentations.
Torah Fund has a major presence at the Conference, and we were presented with an Award to show that we met our goal from 2017-2018. We
will get another Award next year, as we not only met, but exceeded our 2018-2019 goal. Thank you to those who worked on the event, those who came, and thank you to all that donated to allow us to contribute to the Conservative/Masorti Movement’s learning institutions worldwide.
This past month was the Jewish Film Festival, and Kol Rinah Sisterhood sponsored the film, “Reinventing Rosalee,” a truly inspirational film about Rosalee Glass, a Polish woman who lived through WWII and years in Siberia to learn to embrace life. This 102-year-old woman and her daughter came to the Festival and showed us in person what it is meant to “choose life,” that we should thankfully learn to take advantage of all that life has to offer.

Israel is going to elections! Wait, what??
No, you are not reading March’s Newsletter, and Yes, Israel Political system is crazy. Israel is going to its 2nd election system in only 8 months!
It is the first time it is happening since Israel was established! (72 years)
So Why Is This Happening?
It is happening because of 2 reasons:
The first and major reason is the system of the Israeli politics. In order to form a Coalition for the Israeli Government, the future Prime Minister
needs a strong majority - 61 out of 120 Knesset Members.
After the Elections, he has a month for negotiations with all other parties.
One party, “Israel Beytenu”, refused to join the coalition if the Draft law (a law that says every Ultra Orthodox Yeshiva Student has to join the IDF) is changed. Without them, there aren't 61 Knesset Members (They have 5 seats, and without them it is just 60).
So the moment Netanyahu (Israel’s PM) understood that he wouldn't be able to form a coalition, he immediately called for another Election. (The law
says that if someone can’t form a coalition, the mandate goes to the next person, and Netanyahu can’t allow that, since he is facing trial.)
So when is the next election?
The next election day is going to take place on September 17th, 2019. It is 5 months after the last election, and it is very special.
This time, I am going to vote in Israel, as a regular citizen, and not as an official emissary of the country. I am very excited for it, and I hope the next Knesset will be more stable!

Our 2018-2019 school year has come to an end! We had a wonderful graduation celebration on May 17th where our Starfish class showed off all they learned in their Creative Movement class with Ms. Sarah Anne Patz with an original performance. Eight children graduated from our program and 16 children were promoted to next year’s Starfish PreK class. The following Friday, our

preschool classes enjoyed a field day at Villa Park. Children played tee ball, explored the playground equipment, had yoga with Morah Shelley and a yummy snack of watermelon and pretzels. We concluded with Shabbat with Rabbi Scott and Morah Karen and then had a picnic lunch. The infant/toddler classes had a fun day at school with water play, music outside, messy sensory play, and bubbles.
Our summer camp theme this year is “Summer Palooza.” We had a great summer camp kick-off on Thursday, June 6th. Children and families were treated to BBQ, entertained by Silly Jilly the clown, had an opportunity to get a tattoo or face paint, and purchase snow cones from the Kona ice truck. Over the summer we will tie dye t-shirts, participate in special dress days, have water play; and our oldest classes will take a field trip to the History Museum.

What were we?
We started as a book club in support of Scholars in Residence. We would pick a book which related to a Scholar’s program and review it to help us appreciate the Scholar’s presentation.
Our third Scholar, Hillel Kieval, recommended Ismar Schorsch’s book Text and Context.
A large part of that book dealt with a group of German intellects of the early 1800s who formed a self-learning discussion group (the “Verein”, often translated as “society”) to better understand Judaism.
The Verein led to the development of the Reform, Conservative and Modern Orthodox movements.
The nature of our books changed to emulate that group. We wanted to understand our authorities, Maimonides, Schechter, Spinoza etc. Although we sought Rabbinic oversight (Rabbi Skoff, z’l’, attended regularly), self-learning became a critical aspect.
Where are we?
In recent months we have attempted to address current issues: Elliot Dorff’s book, The Unfolding Tradition: Jewish Law After Sinai, the role of the Matrilineal concept in modern Judaism, Gillman’s Sacred Fragments and Doing your own Theology (the next program will deal with Ritual and Prayer). We are planning programs on Chazzanute and on Israel.
What should we be in the future?
The simple answer is we must fill a need. There are multiple Orthodox facilities in Clayton/University City offering sophisticated traditional educational programming. We are the only non-Orthodox facility in this area.
Our membership is rich with educators who are innately self-learners. Our members have contributed with interesting topics and excellent presentations. We’ve also have had the benefit of having Rabbi Pamela Barmash here and she has bestowed upon us her vast knowledge and experience. Nevertheless, this has been mostly a lay-led endeavor.
We would like to continue operating that way and we are asking you for your feedback.
Rabbi Arnow has suggested that we plan regular meetings over the next year. To do so, we need to pick interesting subjects and increase the number participating. We must increase our appeal so that individuals are willing to set aside their limited social time to participate, to increase the number of those taking ownership.
We have used individuals’ homes, Lunch and Learn following Shabbat services and Sunday in-house programs.
We ask that you take a few minutes to think about our questions and send a response.

Ten years ago we listened to a series of lectures by our Scholar in Residence, Rabbi Neil Gillman, who opened a new world to us in appreciating Judaism. In addition to his didactic presentations, he encouraged us to take advantage of the wonderful literature that was available to us.
A year ago, in honor of his death, our “Verein Discussion Group” initiated a review of his book Sacred Fragments. The book concluded with the suggestion that most Jews develop their own beliefs about the nature of God, the Torah, afterlife, etc. and that there is a value in sharing their beliefs. In order to test the hypothesis, we approached the members of our group. Eight individuals agreed to share.
Is one’s personal theology a private matter not to be shared, or is there a value to know that your beliefs are shared by others?
In chapter 4 of his classical book Judaism as a Civilization, Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan proposes that the impact of modernism has altered the Jew’s attitude toward traditional beliefs. He describes the factors responsible for forming one’s theology.
On July 13th Dr. Martin Israel will present chapter 4 of Kaplan’s book at a lunch and learn. We hope you will attend and help us answer the question “Do individuals wish to share their personal theology?"
