The Hledan Flyover in Yangon, Myanmar, received the 2014 ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award from the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO). The award was presented at the 32nd Conference of ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations 2014 (CAFEO 2014) awards ceremony, held at the Sedona Hotel, Yangon, Myanmar, on 12 November 2014.

Shwe Taung Development Company Limited was the Contractor (Design & Build) for the project, while T.Y. Lin International (TYLI) provided Design and Seismic Analysis Services.

“Hledan Flyover was our fi rst project in Myanmar. It was an engineering challenge delivered to a very ambitious programme. We thoroughly enjoyed working on it and indeed are delighted to have our efforts rewarded with this prestigious award”, said Mr Lim Kuan Pow, Head of Bridges and Special Structures, TYLI.

The ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award is given to an organisation or persons responsible for outstanding engineering projects in the ASEAN region.

Built to alleviate severe traffi c congestion in the busy, fast-growing city of Yangon, the fl yover, which runs along Pyay Road, has a total length of almost 500 m (1640 ft) and crosses Hledan Junction, a major, fi ve-arm intersection located in the heart of Yangon. Because the fl yover is located at the centre of the city, and serves as a vital part of the city’s landscape, visual aesthetics of the structure was a top priority for TYLI design engineers.

The fl yover is a composite steel girder bridge with a typical span length of 30 m (98 ft). The main span across Hledan Junction measures 40 m (131 ft) and is divided into 14 spans with seven steel girders in each span. The width of the deck is 16 m (15.5 ft), carrying dual carriageways with two lanes of traffi c in each direction.

The project was completed in just 12 months, to minimise disruption to existing traffi c during bridge construction.
