THE SIS SOCIALNEWSLETTER FROM

SENIORS INFORMATION SERVICE

It has been an amazingly busy few months starting with the Expo on the 25th September leading into the International Day of Ageing on the 1st October.

Message from Jenny Hughes, Chief Executive

Speaking of an acknowledgement I would like to thank all our exhibitors, sponsors, volunteers and staff for the huge success of the 2015 Disability, Ageing and Lifestyle Expo. It was the first time we had taken responsibility for the Expo and we were delighted that over 3,000 attendees came and provided great feedback on the Expo and what we can improve next year. Some of the feedback we received included how great it was that they had the opportunity to learn about the products and services available to the aged care and disability sectors, and also have some fun with games, sports demonstrations, listen to guest speakers and see some great local talent perform on the main stage.

If you attended and would like to give some feedback or have ideas for the 2016 Expo please contact us. We would be delighted to listen.

On a more general note we offer a range of services and information some of which is highlighted in this month’s SIS Social. Please call or email us if you are interested in finding out more about the various services that SIS offers.

It is a month which is used by many important issues and causes to bring to our attention the awareness of Breast Cancer, Carers, Mental Health and a focus on Anti-Poverty to name a few.

Disability, Ageing and Lifestyle ExpoThe recent Disability, Ageing and Lifestyle Expo held at the Wayville Showgrounds was a great success for organisers and exhibitors who were kept busy with over 3,000 attendees. It was wonderful to see so exhibitors and sponsors networking together at the cocktail party held on the Thursday prior to the Expo. The variety of organisations represented included health, wellbeing, travel, mobility equipment, support services, rehabilitation, sporting and many more.

We thank the former DIRC (Disability Information Resource Centre) Board for granting us the opportunity to take responsibility for offering the Expo. This year, we themed the 2015 Disability, Ageing and Lifestyle Expo, My Life My Choice focussing on improving the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of people living with disabilities, those on the ageing journey, and those interested in living an active lifestyle. The expo featured performances, demonstrations, sports, games and recreational activities, plus a digital literacy centre that was available to the public.

Additionally, the expo provided information, practical solutions and ideas for people who are ageing, those living with a disability, family, friends, carers, students who are interested to study or work in disability and ageing fields, baby boomers, self-funded retirees, 50+ who are interested in living active lifestyles including travel, downsizing and making social connections. The participation and support we received from over 150 exhibitors was fantastic and we thank all the exhibitors who took to Facebook and Twitter to promote their services and the expo as a whole.

We would also like to thank all our Sponsors, Exhibitors, Performers and Volunteers for their support during the Expo. Our proud sponsors of the Disability, Ageing and Lifestyle Expo were the Department of Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI), Rally HomeCare, ARN and Chemist King.

If you would like to be involved in next years’ expo as a sponsor or exhibitor, please email contact us at [email protected] or call the SIS office on 8168 8776 and ask for Sakina.

In our modern world it is an increasing necessity for people to be able to contact and access Government agencies over the Internet using computers, tablets or smartphones. Having a MyGov account allows people to check information on their Age Pension, lodge a tax return on line with the Australian Taxation Office, update their details with Medicare, to name a few. Seniors Information Service aims to support seniors and people with a disability to keep connected and access services in a faster way. Our volunteers can assist consumers with setting up a MyGov account. If the person needing help doesn’t have an email address, our volunteers can also provide the help necessary to create one.

SIS Helping with MyGov, My Aged Care

What’s new

Our staff were out and about…

Presentation to the Residents of Forest Place Retirement VillageLuisa delivered a presentation to around 110 residents of the Forest Place Retirement Village in Happy Valley on the 30 September. Luisa spoke about the services that SIS provides, the costs and admission processes for residential aged care, and home and support care services available for seniors. The issue of aged care costs was a major concern for many of the residents. Tea Tree Gully Men’s ShedMichael had an opportunity to visit the Tea Tree Gully Men’s Shed at Holden Hill. The group was started a number of years ago by Trevor Camac. The Tea Tree Gully Council provided Trevor with much support, including building a new and well-resourced workshop.

Yet for all the impressive machinery on display, it really is the sense of comradery that makes the Men’s Shed so much more than a place to get your hands dirty. Guest speakers and local excursions complement the group’s social activities and their pocket directory of SA services is an excellent resource.

Make no mistake, the Tea Tree Gully Men’s Shed’s ongoing mission to ‘develop, promote and maintain an inclusive community’, is being well and truly achieved. Planning Ahead Forum of the St Philothei Miriam our Access and Equity Officer, along with Catherine Moyse, Wills on Wheels, presented a session on the 22 September to the Greek Welfare Services of SA Inc St Philothei on the topic of Planning Ahead. The presentation was held at the Thebarton Community Centre which was attended by 160 seniors and 15 staff and volunteers.

Recap from September

Imagine if... You are lying in hospital, unable to communicate your wishes to your loved ones. They are upset, confused and don’t know what to do. It all happened so suddenly...

An Advance Care Directive is a legal document that allows you to formally express your wishes regarding future medical care and lifestyle decisions. You can nominate a person or people called Substitute Decision Makers to make decisions for you if you are not able to make decisions for yourself or communicate your wishes. It lets you have a say about your future care and helps your family, friends and carers to know what type of health treatment you would like as well as specifying outcomes or treatments that you wish to avoid – such as being placed on life support or CPR.

Your Substitute Decision Maker can ONLY make decisions for you when you have impaired decision-making capacity. And, a health practitioner can ONLY provide health care under the Advance Care Directive for you when you have impaired decision-making capacity (a person will be taken to have impaired decision-making capacity if the person is not capable of: understanding information that may be relevant to the decision; retaining the information; using the information to make a decision; or communicating the decision in any manner).

If you do not have an Advance Care Directive in place your family or caregivers will need to make application to the South Australian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (formerly the Guardianship Board). If there is no appropriate family or friend to be guardian the South Australian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (SACAT) could appoint the Public Advocate to be the guardian. The Public Advocate could then make decisions about your welfare issues.

Catherine Moyse of Wills on Wheels, visits SIS each Wednesday between 10.00am and 2.30pm. She is able to work with you to prepare or update your will as well as your Enduring Power of Attorney and Advanced Care Directive. Alternatively, Catherine can be contacted directly on 0411 281 971 or8379 7030 or via email on admin@wowadelaide.

On 30 September we held an information session on LGBTI Aged Care Packages. Our speaker for the evening was Jill from St Louis Community Care who are one of the 2 providers in Adelaide of these packages. Many people in the LGBTI community are not aware that they are entitled to access these packages which are designed to provide that little bit of extra help and support for individuals to help them continue to live in their own homes and maintain their current way of life. There are 4 different levels of packages available depending on the amount of help you are assessed as needing.

The session was very successful with participants asking SIS to run it again to enable even more people to come along and be informed about these packages. One comment from a participant was “after hearing about these and the support St Louis is providing to the LGBTI community I now feel much better about my future, I have been feeling a bit unsure about my future until now”.

If you would like information about LGBTI Aged Care Packages or to find out when the next session will be held contact Paul on 8168 8723 or email Paul at [email protected]
