Dear Friends, As I reflect on our beautiful theme goingforward, Journey to Newness, I sometimes feelit odd to be contemplating "newness" as we areall aging (beautifully, of course). The saying"nothing new under the sun" has no place inour lives if we are able to approach each dayas a new day with all of its challenges andgifts. We've been on this journey for a longtime now. Our newness comes when and how

we choose to bring our uniqueness to one another.

We each have our own starting point. And, as is the case with most ofour lives, our lives have had many twists and turns, not necessarily ofour own design. I love to reference my favorite saying, which many ofyou have heard from me, perhaps too often: "If you want to make Godsmile, tell Him your plans."

To quote Joan Chittister: "Life is not one road. It is many roads, thewalking of which provides the raw material out of which we find hopein the midst of despair. Every dimension of the process of struggle isa call to draw from a well of new understandings. It is in theseunderstandings that hope dwells."

None of us can continue on our journeys, wherever they may take us,without one another. With all of the struggles facing our world today, there is no place for loneliness or apathy. It is in our Presence to oneanother that we are given the strength, courage, joy and the hope neededto be all that we can be to our Dear Neighbor and especially those in need.

A beautiful song written by Jan Novotka says it much better than I can.It goes like this:

“It's not what you do, but how you do it. It's not what you see, but howyou see. It's not what you say, what you know or achieve ... But it's thePresence, the Presence you are.”

My wish is that we may journey together in peace, to be all that we canfor one another and our Dear Neighbor, using the gifts and graces givento us by our Creator. May God Bless us all.

ProfileSister Joan WagnerIn Pursuit of Truth, Goodness and Beauty

Sister Joan Wagner (Mary Matthias) talks to Sister Judith Justinger about her fulfilling ministries. Herlove of gardening inspires her to work outside the Clarence Residence in spring, summer and fall.

Q. Where did you grow up? A. I grew up in Alden. From age one through six, I livedon a farm with cows and chickens, very close to both setsof grandparents. I graduated from St. Joseph Universityparish school. Through the effort and encouragement ofSisters Mary Grace and Irma, I was able to attend MountSt. Joseph Academy (MSJA).

Q. Where did you find inspiration?A. At the Mount, I met inspirational women who formedmy young years. Sisters Agnes Clare, de la Salle and GraceBernard were among those who challenged me intellectuallyand touched my heart. The pursuit of Truth, Goodness andBeauty, the guiding principles of my life, were born.

I had three great-aunts who were Franciscans, one stillliving. Her joy and humility were gifts to me. I joined theSisters of St. Joseph at age 21 in 1951.

Q. What was your preparation for your ministries?A. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees with emphasis on specialeducation from Mount St. Joseph Teachers College, master’sin education of the deaf from SUNY Buffalo, master’s intheology from Notre Dame University, and courses in drama at SUNY Fredonia.

Q. Tell us about your teaching ministry.A. St. Aloysius, St. Patrick’s in Salamanca, and St. Margaretgrade schools; St. Joseph School for Exceptional Children inDunkirk; then MSJA – World History, English, Religion, DramaClub.

Q. You had a well-known career teaching spiritualityand providing guidance through retreats and spiritual direction.

A. Courses I taught at Christ the King Seminary includedIntroduction to Spirituality, History of Spirituality, FourGospels, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, and the Exercisesof St. Ignatius.

I initiated St. Joseph Center for Spirituality, which for 25years was a training center. My retreat ministry includedreligious communities in Niagara Falls, Erie, Rochester,Syracuse and Allegany.

Q. When did your interest in gardening begin?A. My grandmother raised beautiful flowers, especiallygladiolas. How I loved seeing her care for them. My Dad“talked” to his flowers.

I garden because I am called to do it. Beauty is so primal inGod’s world. In a way, it is a door that opens me to reflecton God’s Truth and Goodness. I talk to God and sometimesI whisper encouragement to the plants.

Q. How often do you garden at the Residence?A. I check the weather every day. I have extra special soiland Miracle-Gro to help and, of course, sunshine andwatering. (It’s like a hospital.) Winter feels long and drearyso I have inside plants, mostly African violets. I do bring ingeraniums to start new ones. I like to see how tall I can geta single blossom. It is fun to experiment.

Q. Do you have a favorite tree or flower?A. I love the Red Maple tree. Flowers? I love them all, especially the simpler ones.

Over the years, it has evolved from primarily a retirement home and infirmary to becomethe Congregation’s administrative offices, active wellness center and independent andassisted living residence. The Sisters enjoy welcoming the “Dear Neighbor” to this place in awarm, congenial spirit.

A statue of St. Joseph holding the child Jesus was moved from 2064 Main Street in Buffaloto Clarence in 1969, preceding months of construction that culminated in the buildingdedication in 1970. The statue, which has stood close to the SSJ motherhouse for 125 years,is near the building’s main entrance in Clarence.

Sister Marie McNamara (Mary Aquin) took leadership of a campaign to reach out to the community for financialsupport, with the assistance of volunteer campaign managers. A commemorative book published at thededication lists an extraordinary number of donors representing a wide variety of Western New Yorkers.

This year marks the 50th anniversaryof the Sisters of St. Joseph’s constructionof the 4975 Strickler Road building inClarence, NY.

Business executives and distinguished Catholic leadersof that time made gifts in memory, in gratitude or inhonor. Beside them are names of Sisters and priests, parish societies such as Knights of Columbus, Altarand Rosary, St. Vincent de Paul, Mothers’ Clubs andHome–School Associations; elementary and highschool students taught by the Sisters; Our Lady ofVictory Infant Home nurses and staff; the Buffalo Clubfor the Deaf – and hundreds of individuals and familieseager to lend support. Some donations were desig-nated for specific purposes such as Stations of theCross, pews, furnishings, infirmary, kitchen, diningroom, sanctuary, sacred vessels and vestments.

Sister Marie arranged forthe inspirational stainedglass windows depictingthe Beatitudes to becreated for the two-storychapel, engaging theworld-renowned firm ofRambusch Decorating.Central to the Congregation’s life, the chapel is the sitefor daily Mass, quiet prayer, joyful holiday celebrations, religious lectures, and Masses of Christian Burial.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ciminelli were among the first tomake a financial commitment. Their younger childrenattended the grade school the Sisters operated inClarence and they were active in the parent group.“We loved the Sisters,” Rosalie Ciminelli, a MSJA graduate, said. “In Clarence, they lived across the street from us.Frank had a large garden and he brought bushels ofvegetables to them. He had such a soft heart for theSisters and we wanted to help in any way.”

Carol Bonnes Roth, MSJA 1961 class president, madea donation, as did her parents, Mr. and Mrs. FrancisBonnes. “I knew that the Sisters had limited resourcesand followed my parents’ example to help ensure thatthe Sisters would be provided for as they aged,” Carolsaid. “I donate because I realize that the educationI received at the Mount not only nourished meintellectually but also taught me how to live my life.

She added: “Nuns are the unsung heroes of ourChurch. As they age and their numbers dwindle, theycontinue the ministry of education and also ministerto the poor and underserved in our society.”

Volunteers assisted with fundraising that continuedfor decades. There were spaghetti dinners at theClarence Town Park and fall and spring bazaars(admission price of 50 cents) that featured crocheted, knitted, hand-sewn and other craft items, as well asdesserts made by the Sisters.

A move had been carefully studied since 1959because larger, better and safer facilities were needed. In fact, the first dollars were raised that year when theSisters took up a collection among themselves for atotal of $59.

In 1963, the Buffalo Fire Department stated “graveconcern” about deficiencies in the Main Street conventbuilding constructed in 1899. The cost to makechanges such as replacing old wooden stairways andcombustible ceiling tiles and installing a sprinklersystem was prohibitive. In 1965, Mother M. HaroldBrown, Mother Mary Walter Love and Mother M.Hubert Pollard signed a letter to Pope Paul VIrequesting permission to move to the 120-acre sitein Clarence.

The Sisters already had begun operating a kindergartenfor 30 children at a home purchased in 1965 at 10330Main St. in Clarence. The school gradually expandedthrough grade 5 with Sister Maryann Kolb as principal. It closed in 1974. That place subsequently would beused for various SSJ ministries including the Center forChristian Living (1976-1987), the Lighthouse youth cen-ter (1976-81); the Creative Community of WNY (1989-91); Family Support Center (1994-2003); and ClarenceLighthouse for prayer, retreats and respite (1993-2016).

Sister Mary Anne Devine and SSJ Council members, with the support of the SSJ Advisory Board, includingFrank Offermann, guided the Strickler Road projectto fulfillment. Edward A. Pauly was the architect andSiegfried Construction Co. was general contractor. Afterdedication and blessing of the building by BishopJames McNulty on November 1, 1970, the Sisters hosteda celebration dinner. On November 8, the general publicwas invited to an open house reception. Sixty-fiveSisters moved into their new home.

With characteristic foresight, Sister Marie secured afederal grant to construct housing for the elderly on theClarence property. The 75-unit Claremount opened in1979 and was operated by the Sisters for 35 years beforeit was sold to a housing management agency.

In 2005, the SSJ administrative offices moved toClarence. In 2017, the offices became part of the 4975Strickler Rd. building.

An Act of Kindness during The Blizzard of ‘77Bea Mecca was one of 10 individuals stranded at the ClarenceResidence for three days and three nights during the Blizzard of1977. The Clarence Firehouse received 80 stranded motoristsand sent 10 of them to the Sisters.

Immediately after, Ms. Mecca sent a thank-you note and a donationto the Sisters. “Thank you for all the kindness you showed me,”she wrote. “I was one of the employees from Kmart on Mapleand Transit. The three days I stayed were very enjoyable. I wasthe last person to leave and I got home safe and sound. My familyalso sends their thanks. God bless you all.”

Sister Ellen Recognized by ParishA Western New York Catholic article about St. John the Baptist parish in Alden, NY, notes thecontributions of Sister Ellen McCarthy (Elizabeth Ann) to the parish community, where she isDirector of Evangelization.

The June 2019 feature outlines the many ways that the church and school have created a“family” atmosphere central to the area for multiple generations.

“Perhaps the biggest connection has been Sister Ellen McCarthy, SSJ,” the article states. “SisterEllen, who has celebrated 62 years of service in the diocese has spent the past school yearworking with the youngest children in the school and their teachers.

“Not only does she help to coordinate the school’s weekly Masses, she works directly with thepre-K through second-grade teachers to ensure that they have an understanding of the faith.

“Once a week, she visits each classroom and participates in religion lessons. This is definitely a highlight for the students, asthey are delighted by her stories, her songs and her infectious love of the faith. Sister Ellen adds to student faith formationby taking the students to the church, hosting Baptism classes, and making the Stations of the Cross approachable.

“Sister Ellen is not new to the school. She was born and raised in Alden, is a graduate of the school and served as schoolprincipal. Many parents remember her as their principal and love to see her working with their own children.”

Yoga Classes Focus on Sisters' Well-Being

Sister Margaret Manzella so enjoyed a chair yoga sessionled by Mari Irwin that she booked the founder and CEO ofSoul Candy Project to conduct a similar program in May andJune for Sisters at the Clarence Residence. It was very wellreceived. A second class filled up in July and there are plansfor a fall session.

Wearing sneakers and comfortable clothes, with some get-ting a bit of extra help from walkers and hearing aids, theSisters gathered in the first-floor parlor for the hour-longclasses. Activities were designed to help them breathe andmove better and to build focus and mindfulness.

“I could see and the Sisters could see improvement in theirstrength and balance,” Ms. Irwin said. “Each had a differentpersonal goal, but the nice thing about it was doing ittogether as a community.”

With a master’s degree in education, classroom teachingexperience and 200-hour certification in yoga, Marioperates a mobile yoga service that travels to sites that aremost convenient for the adults and children who participate.

“I enjoyed it a whole lot,” Sister Jeanne Eberle, a participant, said. “It is a fun way to have exercise. Mari has a gentle, caringway and is very encouraging. You feel relaxed, not tired, atthe end of the class, although you have exercised arms, legs, the whole body. This is a worthwhile and very positive thingfor the Sisters.”

“I felt very honored to be invited to be with the Sisters of St.Joseph,” Mari said. “The Sisters are amazing. When we aretogether, I want them to experience peace, relaxation andhappiness.”

“Season for Nonviolence” Benefits Camp PeaceprintsInmates at Attica Correctional Facility participated in

the 64-day United Nations designated “Season for

Nonviolence,” which ended April 4. In addition to

making personal pledges to practice nonviolence, they

collected money to contribute to the work of peace.

The SSJ Sister Karen Klimczak Center for Nonviolence’s

Camp Peaceprints was chosen as the 2019 beneficiary.

Their check for $793 supported scholarships for

youngsters aged 8 through 13 to attend the 12th

annual camp, held July 15-26 at the St. Mary’s School

for the Deaf campus.

Men in prison frequently express their desire to help

prevent children and youth from making the kind of

poor past decisions they made. Vivian R. Waltz, Center

executive director, accepted the check at the prison.

She recalls: “The exuberant joy I witnessed on the faces

of the cheering men could not match the joy that was

welling up within me, as I knew beyond a doubt that

God and Sister Karen had brought me to this moment.”

Sister Rosalind Rosolowski, CSSF, an Attica chaplain,

worked with the inmates and prison administrators

to facilitate the donation. The 12th annual camp drew

48 young participants. Among the highlights was

convening a rally, “Families Belong Together,” in Niagara

Square on July 24. On a visit to the Albright-Knox Art

Gallery, they viewed the installation “Tolerance Wall #2”.

New Logo Represents Newness ThemeThe Sisters of St. Joseph of Buffalo have adopted a new logo to representtheir Journey to Newness theme.

Theresa Martin of Dearborn, MI, a friend of Sister Beth Ann Finster sincethey met during Theresa’s freshman year at the University of DetroitMercy (UDM) nearly 15 years ago, designed the logo. Theresa has a master’sdegree in architecture and is a self-employed designer.

“Design projects like this one for Sister Beth and the Congregationremind me of the more important ways that graphic design can beused,” Theresa said.

She explained: “My inspiration came from the theme. I wanted toinclude elements of nature and a pathway of some sort … details thatcan be interpreted in different ways. The green landscape could be mountains, hills or trees. The blue waves couldrepresent a river, a pathway forward or even a gentle breeze. The sun is centrally located, providing steady light forguidance and inspiration.”

This is not the first time that Theresa and Sister Beth have combined efforts. Theresa created many different flyers andposters promoting the Ministry Office’s activities during her student days. Sister Beth retired last year after serving ascampus minister at UDM for 33 years.

“Sister Beth has been such an inspiration in my life and your community is blessed to have her,” Theresa said. “I sincerelyhope and pray that my design can help keep the momentum going for the Congregation’s mission and new leadershipfar into the future.”

Kathleen Christian Maugeri sent this email message to Sister Judith Justinger, facilitator of Presence magazine since 2013.

“Because of your wonderful magazine, our family has made a loving connectionlost many years ago. I always look over the names of donors to see if I know anyone. One time, over a year ago, I saw that someone named Kevin Duddy donated inmemory of my mother’s cousins, Sister Dorothy and Sister St. Patrick!

“I knew Sister Pat very well, as she was often a visitor at our home. I also have theold family Bible and recognized the name Duddy. Margaret Duddy was my grand-father’s sister and the mother of the two nuns.  In 1909, she passed away and herdaughters came to live with my grandparents. Mr. Duddy moved to Ohio and theconnection was lost until now.

“I found Kevin Duddy on Facebook and we have had a most wonderful time sharing our family stories, pictures anddocuments. This May 18 several family members met in person and it was a joyous occasion. Little did I know when Iattended the Mount over 50 years ago (class of 1964) that another benefit would be finding family. I thought you mightlike to know how far reaching your publication is.”

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Buffalo joined voices with SSJs

throughout the nation in declaring support for this statement

to end gun violence issued on August 7 by the U.S.

Federation of Sisters of St. Joseph. Over the past

year, the Federation has issued several statements

on peace and justice subjects including Addressing

Racism, Humane Treatment of Arriving Migrants,

the Trump Administration Affordable Clean

Energy Rule, Condemnation of Anti-Semitic

Killing, and Calls for Healing of Divisions.

“As Sisters of St. Joseph, we share in the communal

heartbreak of our nation in the face of unthinkable

violence. The recent mass shootings in our country impel

us to once again demand that all citizens and elected leaders

end the rage and division that all too often result in mass, indiscriminate

violence. We seem unable to stop the epidemic of hate that has overwhelmed us.

“What we are witnessing today is a terrorism that uses mass public communication against a particular

individual or group. This incites acts of terrorism that happen seemingly at random. We are called to confront

rhetoric that stokes racism and hatred of anyone perceived to be ‘different.’ We are all responsible. Let us monitor

our own language and actions and call attention when the language and actions of others cross the line.

“While mass shootings capture our attention, we cannot forget that they are only part of the violence

perpetrated by use of firearms. Homicides, suicides, domestic violence and accidents caused by guns are

pervasive in all parts of the country, traumatizing families and communities every day.

“In the short term, we implore all legislative bodies to pass legislation that ban assault weapons, require universal

background checks for all gun sales, provide funding for gun violence prevention research, and make the

trafficking in weapons a federal crime. At the same time, we must continue examining the root causes of

violence and working to change our culture.

“The Sisters of St. Joseph pledge our support to end the scourge of rage and hatred, and we will consistently

call for legislation to end gun violence. “

Nancy Langer Leads Nativity MiguelNancy M. Langer, a graduate of the former Cardinal Mindszenty High School

staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph in Dunkirk, NY, is president of the Nativity

Miguel Middle School of Buffalo.

This faith-based school for grades 5 through 8 provides a secure and nurturing

environment for underserved students. Its mission is to break the cycle of

poverty through education. Features include an extended school day, summer

learning and enrichment opportunities, emphasis on personal mentoring,

and high school tuition assistance for graduates.

The school maintains contact with students and

families throughout high school and helps to provide

access to supportive services.

“There are two campuses – St. Monica (formerly St.

Lawrence School) on Wright Ave. for girls and St.

Augustine (formerly St. James School) on Hastings

Ave. for boys,” Nancy explained. “I really feel like I

am in the middle of a little miracle,” she said, noting that small classes and individual attention are proving

successful. The school delights in the achievements of its alumni and welcomes them back to talk with

current students.

In 2005, the Rev. James Joyce, SJ, school founder, selected Nancy, a longtime Catholic education supporter

and leader, as its first development director. She became president in 2008. She is a Niagara University alumna

and a graduate of University at Buffalo Law School.

Nancy has served as president of the Diocese of Buffalo’s Board of Catholic Education, president of the Board of

Trustees of the Institute of the Sisters of St. Joseph, and president of the St. Thomas More Guild for Catholic

lawyers. She chairs the Board of Directors of the national Nativity Miguel Coalition.

Nancy’s leadership contributions have been recognized with numerous awards. Among them are the Federation

of Catholic Schools’ St. John Neumann Award, St. John Eudes Award, Trocaire College’s Reflection Award, and

Business First of Buffalo’s Women of Influence Award.

Nancy and husband John paid the highest compliment to the

Sisters of St. Joseph by enrolling their three children – Nora,

Anne and Peter – in Mount St. Joseph Elementary School, the

Little Mount.

“I often think of Mindszenty,” the former Nancy Hart, Class of

1974, said. “We had everything we needed. Maybe not the

fancy stuff that big public schools might have, but there was

no doubt that the teachers cared about us. So, while they might

be teaching math, they also would also teach what it means to

be a good person and how to get along with others. That was

such a lesson to me.

“Sister Dorothy DeMaria was my guidance

counselor and she had the greatest influence

on me. The Sisters of St. Joseph had a big

influence on our whole family, starting

with my mother’s family in Lackawanna.”

Sister Dorothy fondly recalls her former student and especially

a highlight of Nancy’s year as senior class president, when

Cardinal Jozsef Mindszenty of Hungary came to visit his

namesake school. Nancy introduced him to an assembly and

presented him with a bouquet of red roses. Sister said: “There

was not a single empty seat in the auditorium, which held more

than 1,000. All of Dunkirk was excited.”
