FROM REV NIGEL DI CASTIGLIONE MOVING FORWARD I have a lot of meetings. I am not unusual in this. One thing I notice, however, is how the culture of an organisation or group affects the way meetings work. Some devote most of their meeting time and conversation to looking back, taking note of what has happened – often with a sense of thanksgiving, sometimes with regret. That is good, often helpful and always instructive but with the attendant risk of achieving very little as a result of having met together. Others have meetings which are more inclined to look forward at what is coming or what might be; happy to learn lessons from what has taken place but more intent on shaping things that they have influence over. If you need to know, my style and preference is with the latter rather than the former. I remember talking, almost 20 years ago, with a very sincere man who had at one time - when younger and more active - been the treasurer for the church I was serving then as Vicar. He told me he had always seen his task as receiving what had been passed down to him carefully, stewarding his responsibilities diligently and then passing on roles (meaning the books in his case) in exactly the same condition in which he had received them. He saw his job as keeping things just as they always had been. Both of us realised (quite cheerfully in fact) we worked with different perspectives. When saying goodbye to his friends – in the run-up to what Christians know as the Ascension – Jesus cast a vision for what the future of their lives, their impact and the spheres of influence would be. It was anything but a call to ‘keep things as they are right now’. He told them to travel to places they had never been to hitherto and to fulfil responsibilities they barely understood. At the same time he left the strategy (the how-to) up to them, whilst promising the where-with-all (the divine resources) that would make the unknown become possible. It did; it’s the story of the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament section of the Bible. Sitting in a meeting of trustees one day (in another part of the country) we were looking at the large fund we were trying to steward wisely. Previously the trustees had managed the investment well, seen the value of the fund grow reasonably but without achieving any other objectives. As the newcomer I asked a question: what might happen if things carried on in that way ad infinitum. Eventually another trustee said: “I suppose it would be a bit like the parable of the talents that Jesus told”. His insight became a defining moment. In the next few years the same group saw record growth in their investment returns and invested in a property that enabled the parish church to house a youth worker. They had decided not just to bury what they had and be fund managers; they wanted to make a difference and they did. Nigel di Castiglione, Team Rector

POLICE and CRIME COMMISSIONER I read the newly elected Police and Crime Commissioner Jason Ablewhite visited Cambridge on his first day in the middle of May getting a taste of frontline policing and meeting the public. The commissioner will take measures to reduce violent, drink and drug related crimes as he was shown violence hot spots in the Cambridge city centre. Keen to look at the role alcohol plays in causing violent crime and whether there is more work with licensed premises and their security teams in tackling the problem. Jason Ablewhite wants to help the homeless and to fully understand how people get into this situation in the first place and look at how to prevent vulnerable individuals particularly those with mental health issues. I will follow the Police and Crime Commissioner Jason Ablewhite’s policies, in particular to answer the question what action will be taken to reduce rural crime. I really enjoyed the celebrations of Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th Birthday. In our village we enjoyed a special family service at the Church followed by a tea party that put anything in The Mall into shade. A super afternoon and thanks to all who helped. I have received lots and lots of positive comments on the Speed Awareness Sign, and the general view is that it really does help to reduce the number of speeding vehicles. Just to re-iterate, we have brackets on four lampposts in the village and the sign will be moved amongst them thus keeping motorists on their toes. We operate a similar system with our Speedwatch team and it all combines to make our community safer. We have a really keen and dedicated team, and if anyone can spare 2 or 3 hours per month do come and join us – the more the merrier. The Police realise the benefits of Speedwatch and support the scheme – no doubt partly because it lightens their load – and are keen to involve communities in their local policing. We hope to hold a meeting later in the year to explore closer links with the local police team, watch this space. The other great news is the installation of the Defibrillator at the Cade. This, you will recall, was purchased from the proceeds of the sale of the Institute and is just another example of making our village safer. A well attended training course has taken place and the code for access is C159X. If anyone would like any further details or instruction contact John Pettifor 01480 880672 We have Feast Week to look forward to this month and I think it is tremendous to see cricket played each day on our beautiful village green, with events taking place each evening and culminating with the Fete on the Saturday. It is truly the continuation of a great British tradition. It is great to see the Woodland Walk and Pocket Park being used by Newton School for their Forest School lessons. It is helping the children learn about the countryside, plants, bugs, birds and animals and how to utilise it. There have been some super dens built! Now I will finish with POO – yet again. I constantly receive complaints of dog fouling around the village, and even some picked up and left on the ground in bags – explain that to me if you can! We have more dog waste bins in this village than most, so CLEAR IT UP AND BIN IT! Please note that our next meeting will be at The Newton School, because of Feast Week, on Tuesday, 12th July at 7.30pm followed by a meeting of the Village Green Trust. See you there. See the full draft minutes in the bus shelter and as always, praise or problems to me at 45 Caxton End or on 01480 880122 or [email protected] or our Clerk Jane Bowd on 01480 468451 or [email protected]

JULY BULLETIN FROM CAMBRIDGESHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE We are starting to see the first glimpses of summer and the hot weather – long may it continue. Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service hopes you have all been staying fire safe with your latest outdoor activities, but just in case, here are our firefighters’ top tips: • When out camping or using a tent, never use candles inside or nearby and always

discourage smoking nearby. Never cook inside a tent either. • If cooking outdoors, keep barbeques on level ground, never pour accelerant on them

and use them well away from fences, sheds and foliage. • If you have a bonfire, build it well away from buildings, tents or other flammable

objects and make sure it is properly out when you leave. • When out in the countryside, extinguish cigarettes properly and dispose of them

responsibly – never throw a lit cigarette into a field or wooded area. • Don’t forget to stay safe around our county’s waterways and if you see someone in

trouble in water, call 999 immediately with clear details of your location. For the latest news, incidents and safety advice, or to contact us, log on to www.cambsfire.gov.uk or call 01480 444500. Sign up to email alerts and find us on Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook

ELTISLEY FRIENDSHIP GROUP will meet at The Cade Pavilion on Wednesday 13th July at 2pm. An Afternoon of Musical Entertainment with Jessica & Sophie. Refreshments and raffle. All welcome. Guests: £1.

PAPWORTH TENNIS CLUB: Over 60 people from Papworth and neighbouring villages came to the club's Open Day where complete beginners or rusty rackets returning to the game could see the facilities, have a hit and get some coaching tips from the qualified coaching staff. Committee members were on hand to register those attending, answer any questions visitors had and offer drinks and flapjacks to parents and players. Anyone joining on the day could take advantage of a New Member discount and free coaching. Papworth offers some of the best facilities in the county west of Cambridge with 4 newly painted courts and floodlights - the joining fees remain excellent value, being far less than golf club or gym membership yet offers unlimited play and no need to book! For those who missed the last Open Day but would be interested, there is another chance on Sunday July 17th between 10am and 2pm - another Great British Tennis Weekend shortly after Wimbledon is held. You can register via the LTA website or just show up on the day - bring trainers if you'd like to hit a few balls. All ages and stages welcome - there's a full range of coaching options available and social Club Nights twice a week (and one for juniors too!). It's a small, friendly club and new members will be made very welcome.

ST PANDIONIA’S PARISH - JUNE 2016 Well, July is here and so with it the annual Church Fête on Saturday 16th July from 2.00-4.30pm. This is the church’s main fundraising event of the year so please support it in any way you can - by buying raffle tickets, giving to the various stalls, helping out before, during and after or by just coming along on the day and enjoying yourself. The money raised is needed now more than ever as the PCC has just found out that major repairs to the church tower are needed. More details about the fête which includes once again a Produce Show and Companion Dog Show can be found elsewhere in the newsletter.

Other events during Feast Week include our annual Family Pet Service at the church on Sunday 10th July at 4pm. All pets and their owners are very welcome. The service is held outside the church (weather permitting) and is always great fun as well as slightly chaotic!

St Pandionia’s Cafe will be open for business on Friday 15th July from 10am-11.30am with delicious coffee, tea and cakes as well as a chance to have a sit down and chat before the Church Fête the next day. Finally, good news for the following lucky winners in the St Pandionia’s 100 Club June draw - St John the Baptist, Angela Weldon and Jayne Lowther. A few numbers remain unsold. If you would like to be included in the August, October and December draws please call Nichola (880285).

July 27th Turning Points of World War II, a detailed account of the Battle of Stalingrad and the Battle of Britain by Richard Gibbons

In July we remember the sacrifice of Lance Corporal Martin Risely, who died on 30th July 1916. Martin served with the Grenadier Guards for 12 years, in Gibraltar and South Africa (during the closing stages of the Boer War), following which he emigrated to Canada with his wife and 2 sons. In 1916 he enlisted in the Canadian Infantry, and he travelled back to England on the SS Olympic with his battalion. Martin was awaiting embarkation to the Western Front when he was killed in an accident on the railway at Hatfield, after a visit to his parents and his elder sister in Eltisley. Martin was 38 when he died, he rests in Eltisley churchyard.
