The spark that led to their interest in HVAC work was a

bit different for each of the young professionals taking

home top honors at the PHCC Educational Foundation’s

Apprentice Contest at CONNECT last fall.

One used to work on various home remodeling projects

with his dad. Another was studying to go into nursing before

realizing a “four-year college education wasn’t for me.”

Sean Dobbs, the first-place HVAC

contest winner from UA Local 486

in Maryland is a “third-generation of

the Local.” Although he graduated

from college, he says he realized

“there was nothing I wanted to do more than this. I knew I

wanted to work with my hands,” so

he went through the UA Local 486

steamfitter’s apprenticeship.

What has resulted for all these apprentices, however, is

the quick realization that their choices have led to fulfilling

work and limitless possibilities.

“These days, you can go to college and spend the money

and make decent money, or you can go through an apprenticeship and make great money and take those skills wherever you go,” says Dobbs, explaining the

experience he’s gained working on boilers, burners and

chillers.

“Going through an apprenticeship gives you the freedom to take those skills anywhere. You get a skill set that’s extremely valuable, and the compensation is good,” adds Dobbs.

For second-place HVAC contest winner Marshall Brahm from UA Local 601 in Wisconsin, the allure included “getting a company vehicle and solving problems that other people can’t fix themselves.”

The top takeaway from the top three finishers of the Foundation’s HVAC Apprentice Contest? There are limitless possibilities for anyone interested in a p-h-c career.

“ Some of the smartest people I’ve ever met have been within the trades.” – Sean Dobbs, First-Place Winner of the 2017 PHCC HVAC Apprentice Contest

of refrigeration, energy management, food service and

HVAC solutions.

“I thought I’d only be doing HVAC, but – because the

company I work for is involved in commercial refrigeration

– I’m now behind the scenes of things like what keeps

your ice cream cold and what keeps office buildings

comfortable.”

“Every day is a different challenge and that’s great,” he

adds.

That kind of interesting, fulfilling work has opened Allen

Maslo’s eyes to “amazing growth potential.” Allen is

an apprentice with UA Local 597 in Illinois and service

“[This profession] is everything I thought it was going to be and more.” – Marshall Brahm, Second-Place Winner of the 2017 PHCC HVAC Apprentice Contest

Every year at CONNECT, more than 40 companies participate in the PHCC Educational Foundation’s

HVAC and Plumbing Apprentice Contests at some level, providing support through sponsorships,

materials, judges and prizes. “Our sponsors are the lifeblood of our contests,” says Merry Beth Hall, PHCC

Educational Foundation Vice President of Education Content.

“From reusable materials like the Daikin package units or the Eaton Unistrut for the benches, to

consumable materials like pipe and fittings or electrical components, our contests depend on a vast

number of items each year to operate successfully,” Hall adds.

In 2017, both plumbing and HVAC contestants also had a chance to tour Milwaukee Tool, where they

learned about the company and the tools they could win during the competition.

“Without our sponsors, the contests would not happen,” Hall adds. “Their generosity is humbling, and we are always grateful for the tremendous industry support we receive each year.”

A full listing of the 2017 contest sponsors can be found on page 7.

technician for Kroeschell, Inc., a mechanical contractor in

Arlington Heights.

Maslo says “I can become a service manager, sales

person, engineer … anything as long as I put in the work

and continue learning.”

Dobbs concurs that opportunity, respect and compensation

make the p-h-c industry more attractive than ever.

“Some of the smartest people I’ve ever met have

been within the trades, especially when it comes to

troubleshooting and analytical thinking,” he says. “There’s

a lot more to the building trades than people realize. The

field is wide open.”

“I can take my career anywhere I’d like.” – Allen Maslo, Third-Place 2017 PHCC HVAC Apprentice

The 2018 National Plumbing and HVAC Apprentice Contests will take place at CONNECT 2018, October

11-12 in Albuquerque, NM. Twenty plumbing and ten HVAC apprentices will compete to be named the

nation’s best at this event that takes place on the tradeshow floor. The contests are open to high-performing

3rd to 5th year apprentices who are state competition winners or top performers in their local programs.

The HVAC event tests apprentices’ skills in: ✓ Brazing

✓ Refrigerant recovery

✓ Taking readings and performing calculations

✓ Electrical and mechanical troubleshooting

✓ Basic wiring

Plumbing contestants are required to: ✓ Install a basic three-piece bathroom

(water closet, lavatory, and shower)

✓ Install water and DWV lines

✓ Determine rough-in locations

✓ Establish grade lines for installing plumbing

✓ Install vents and cleanouts

✓ Secure horizontal and vertical pipe lines to wood

and metal surfaces

If you have an apprentice who has the skills for success, why not

send him or her to compete at the national level? Show that your

business hires the best! If you have any candidates, you can find

more information online at: phccfoundation.org/contest.

We think our donors should have a chance to meet the people who benefit when you donate to the Foundation – but that’s a lot of people! So here are thank you notes from just four of the 41 apprentices and students who received Foundation scholarships last year, all thanks to our donors.

Hard work from our volunteers and many generous contributors helped us to smash our fundraising goal last year. Thanks to those contributors and sponsors, we are happy to announce a $17,500 expansion to our scholarship program for 2018.

This year, 44 plumbing & HVAC apprentices and college students pursuing a degree related to our industry will receive scholarships totaling $105,000. Apprentices enrolled in our online apprentice training through the PHCC Academy® are eligible as well.

Employers who pay for their apprentices’ tuition are still encouraged to have their apprentices apply, as every win reduces training costs and frees funds that can be put back to work in the company.

A limit of four applicants per company will be considered for awards. The deadline is May 1st, but applications can be submitted at any time before then. Visit http://phccfoundation.org/scholarships for more details and to apply.

Paying for college was never going to be easy – it was only going to be possible if I received scholarships. Thanks to your generosity and support, I am able to fulfill my dreams. I am overjoyed and am beyond honored by the award I have received from you. So thank you from the bottom of my heart! – Grace Vaughan Brekke, California Polytech State University

Thank you so much for choosing me to receive the PHCC Educational Foundation scholarship, it means a lot! I plan on attending business school, then a career in HVAC. My father, grandfather, uncle and brother were all in the HVAC field. Thank you for the wonderful opportunity. – Theo Krumholz, Bethel University

Thanks for all your work. I’ll be able to finish schooling and pursue the family trade and teach others how great and important we are to the public. – Jonathan Firkus, Area VII Plumbers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee

One of our best gauges for the health of the economy is the growth of our programs. Here’s the trends we are seeing in some of our programs. We hope you are seeing the same positive signs of growth in your business!

I wish to share my sincerest gratitude for granting me the PHCC Past National Officers

Scholarship last year. I know that you received many applications from people across the

nation, and I am extremely thankful for being blessed by being your recipient.

This money has set me off to a great start at North Carolina State University. I have

already begun taking industrial and Systems Engineering classes, and I absolutely love this

major. This summer I have plans to join my father in getting certified for Air Balancing,

and I have great hopes to apply what I have already learned in my classes to my future

work. Your scholarship has greatly helped me feel more comfortable with my expenses so

that I may focus on my classes, and I am very excited to reach my goals of improving the

HVAC industry.

I would like to thank you again for the support and I hope that everything is going well

with PHCC.

Thank you again, Nikki

Nicole Gorrell

Many people have helped me become successful and I believe in paying it forward. The single act of mentoring a young person, sharing a best practice, making a donation or volunteering creates a domino effect.

I encourage you to continue to build on what was started 30 years ago; like single dominoes or small pebbles, you’re creating a chain reaction, generating thousands of ripples. I’m excited to watch our Foundation effect grow. – Craig Lewis, Foundation Chair
