Dale Wands (‘63) Sara Wantz was from the Jennings Church of Christ where Tom McGee was the minister, and Dale Wands was from Dieterich, Illinois, where Tom McGee previously preached.Dale enrolled at SLCC in the fall of 1959. Sara worked full-time and took night classes, then enrolled full-time in the spring of 1961. Dale was supporting himself by

selling Wearever cookware and someone convinced him to go to Sara’s house to sell her some pots and pans. Her response was, “I won’t need them as I’m not getting married.” Dale took that as a challenge, beginning a friendship which resulted in marriage on September 6, 1962, at the beginning of Dale’s last year of college. As they say, the rest is history. Dale and Sara have been ministering in Rolla, Missouri, since 1970.

Eric & Shani Quarton (‘16) When I was a little girl, my mom told me that the man I would marry would be somebody I would never suspect. She told me that he would probably just be someone that I had spent a lot of time around, and then one day, something would be very different. She was right. Eric and I came to SLCC in the fall of 2012. It wasn’t until the following spring during camp team training that we really started to become friends. In the fall of our sophomore year, I knew something was a little different with Eric. I had a feeling that this friend of mine was feeling a little more than friendly. My feelings were confirmed when Eric stopped me outside of the cafeteria and told me that he thought I was really cool and pretty and that he wanted to take me out for coffee. I totally could have said yes, and it would have been the simplest love story ever. How-ever, I wasn’t quite ready and it wasn’t quite that easy. Thankfully, our friendship grew closer even after I rejected his offer for coffee multiple times. Eric was so incredibly patient with me as we developed the best of friendships – patience is still one of my very favorite qualities about

him. We spent many hours in class together as well as many late nights with friends at Mc-Donalds trying to finish home-work. I knew at the beginning of our junior year that I began to get those “more than friendly” feelings for my good friend Eric, just as my very wise mother told me would happen. For the remainder of our junior year we continued to date and Eric continued to make me smile and laugh every day. Eric proposed to me during our senior year, and we were married in the chapel after graduation on May 27, 2016. SLCC is a very special place for us—it’s where we met, became best friends, fell in love, and eventually married.

CHALLENGING THE NEXT GENERATIONSteve Revisky (‘74)

Going down memory lane may be a sign of old age, but it can also be a powerful catalyst for the present and future. In over four decades of ministry, I have talked with so many that have said, “I can’t believe what a mess my life has become. How did I end up here?” Going down memory lane will always provide clarity because life is all about choices and consequences.

As I look back, I realize I was so blessed to be surrounded by parents and mentors in the church that encouraged me to make every decision based upon: what is it God would have me to choose in this decision that would best serve and honor the Lord Jesus Christ?

I remember as a young child my parents inviting ministers and evangelists into our home for meals and to stay with us, sometimes for up to two weeks. Without ever being consciously aware of it, I saw and knew how much my parents loved preachers. They never once pushed me into ministry verbally but they did it by loving their preachers. So when I went into ministry, I just figured everyone in church would be like mom and dad and love me too. It didn’t take long for me to realize not everyone in the church was like mom and dad.

In my teenage years, my home church preacher was Keith McCaslin, who would later serve 43 years as professor at SLCC. I remember him challenging the youth in our church on a regular basis to consider the possibility that God might be calling some of us into the preaching ministry. Keith did it through his preaching as well as his one-on-one talks with us.

Looking back those were two huge influences in my life as I was making choices that were bigger than life itself. As I go down memory lane, I thank God they were there.

It is a wilderness of voices that our young people are hearing today, calling for them to choose and invest their lives in this way or that.

May we as preachers, teachers, and parents in the church make sure our young people have the opportunity to hear as well, the voice of God calling them — perhaps to the preaching ministry.

Robert Frost said in his poem, The Road Not Taken: “I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.”

And looking back, I am ever so glad, with the encouragement of godly people, I made that choice.

YOUR GIFT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Shelly Wicker Preuer (‘94) Like many of you, I have a special place in my heart for SLCC. It was there that I was shaped and molded by a loving God through His word and through loving people. And, like many places or times in our lives, it’s really the people that mattered, who were in the places that mattered. SLCC people are special people. They matter to our great God and His glorious kingdom. He is working in and through SLCC people to make disciples all over the world. Nothing is more exciting than that! My husband, Greg, and I love to support SLCC. We do so prayerfully and regularly. Would you consider giving to the Kingdom in this way so that 2 Timothy 2:2 will continue to be accomplished? Please give a gift if you can. I know God will multiply it and use it for His glory.

Jim & Sharlene Henderson Sharlene and I have been supporting SLCC for nearly 20 years. When we met, she was a full-time professor at SLCC and she shared with me how God had been using SLCC to bless her life and to meet her needs. The more I learned about the college and understood its mission, the more I felt compelled to support the ministry.Providing a safe and encouraging environment where the Christian leaders of tomorrow are prepared to enter the mission fields of the world is important. God ordained this work that is worthy of prayerful and financial support. In today’s uneasy environment, this haven of peaceful and godly learning is a needed oasis to combat the enemy’s attacks. We have seen the first-hand results of the great work accomplished by SLCC in many of the former students of SLCC we personally know. They are actively involved in intentional work to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. The work and mission of SLCC continues strong today and so does our unyielding support.

Thad Howell (freshman) The first few months at SLCC have been absolutely astounding. The professors are amazing and the people here are truly touched by God’s gentle hand. Everybody is super nice and friendly. All the professors are very helpful and willing to answer questions about homework at a moment’s notice. To top it all off, the food here is extra tasty and nourishing. I highly recommend this college to anyone wanting to further their relationship with Christ.

Amelia Boler (freshman) My first week at SLCC was both exciting and challenging. Being the oldest student in all of my classes was indeed a new experience for me. This experience was made much easier to adapt to, due to the kindness, and helpfulness shown to me by my fellow students, professors and staff of SLCC. The Christian ambience is exceptionally conducive to studying and acquiring a deeper appreciation for the Word of God.My feelings of accomplishment and fulfillment have been enhanced by the quality of instruction I am receiving from my studies. I’ve found that the subject matter of my courses has been of immeasurable value to my ministry. I can honestly say that St. Louis Christian College prepares their graduates to show themselves approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Matriculating at SLCC is truly a blessing that I hold dearly and I am very thankful for this opportunity to make myself a better servant of the gospel of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

SUMMER OF SERVINGAt St. Louis Christian College, we believe that service does not stop with the conclusion of the school year. Our students are dedicated to being the hands and feet of Jesus in a very real way. We are truly blessed to have students with such hearts for service. May God continue to use SLCC to impact the Kingdom.

Stanley McCreary (’68)

The spring and summer of 1956 was a very exciting time among the ministers and churches of the greater St. Louis area as plans were made to begin a Bible College in the fall of 1956. The area churches were all supportive as they were allowing their ministers to be part of the faculty. As I remember it, SLCC began with 13 students. Neal Newland, Finess McCall, Joann Salazar and I were charter freshmen; my brother Allen, Loyal Gallaher, James Haverly, and Bill Price transferred in from other schools along with a few others. Several of these graduated from SLCC. Our teachers were area ministers. The ones I had classes with the first year were Luke Perrine, Vernon Newland, Hubert Burris, S.R. Johnston, Everett Crome, J. W. Jordan, Ivan Odor, Melvin Newland and Gladys Perrine (who taught Song Conducting). I don’t recall anyone getting a salary that first year; however, some who commuted may have received mileage. Classes were held at the Ferguson Christian Church. The first year we had three 12-week terms instead of two 16-week terms. My brother, Allen, and I com-muted from home as our jobs were in Festus. Occasionally we stayed at the make-shift boys’ dorm in the basement of Luke Perrine’s house in Jennings. The spirit of dedication to ministry and educational excellence was very present and was con-tagious. What an exciting time to be a part of the beginning of SLCC! I started the second year and then decided to join the Navy. When I got out of service, I worked a while and then returned to SLCC in 1964. The same spirit of dedication to ministry and educational excellence was present then as it was in the beginning.

REMEMBERING THE EARLY DAYSLoyal Gallaher (‘58)

Luke Perrine phoned me to set up a meeting with him, Vernon Newland, and Hubert Burris about helping to start SLCC as a student. We met in the old church building in Ferguson within a week or two of the beginning of the college. Bev and I were living in Medora, Illinois, where I was a student minister. Our first classes were held in the Ferguson church building. I commuted from Medora to college four days a week. Three days a week, I shared rides with Everett Crome, minister at Gillespie, Illinois, who was teaching English. I think the college provided some mileage money for the first professors. My second year we had moved to DeSoto, Missouri, to help plant a new church, and I commuted from Festus with Allen and Stanley McCreary four days a week. The college had a small attendance but we were very close and the faculty was a great encouragement to us. All of the professors were in active ministry and I caught the spirit of their dedication to service and evangelism. As one of the first students, I became the first graduate of SLCC in May of 1958. The Baccalaureate and Commencement ceremonies were held in the Ferguson church. On my graduation day, there was a tour of the current campus site (originally 11 acres) in Florissant. I think the old white house was the only building on the property that day.

He was the minister at the Ferguson Christian Church when he became involved in the planning with Luke Perrine and Ver-non Newland to start a Bible college in the St. Louis area. SLCC had its begin-ning in the Ferguson church building. Mr. Burris also served also as teaching faculty in the early years. His granddaughter, Ashley, and great-nephew, Matthew, were SLCC students.
