dents and teachers.
If you want to submit
poems or stories you
have written, pictures
you have taken, or
something you created
please send it to the
email on the last page.
We want as many stu-
dent submissions as
possible, since this is,
after all, your maga-
zine.
We hope you enjoy
the first issue.
WELCOME TO THE FIRST ISSUE ! !
STUDENTS WIN AWARD IN MADRID
Last year in our 3rd of
ESO Geography class we
did a Wiki about climate
change with our teacher
Javier Moreno.
We entered it into the Edu-
cared Contest. This past
summer Javier sent us an
email with some good
news, we had won 3rd
place in the contest and
received an MP4 player
for the prize.
We also got the opportu-
nity to go to Madrid to
accept our prize.
On the afternoon of the 9th
of December, 2009 we left
Fiñana and went to the
airport to go to Madrid.
We were very frightened
because it was the first
time that we had travelled
by plane.
When we arrived in Ma-
drid we stayed at a hotel,
which was very big and
beautiful. Then we visited
some commercial centres
where Vanessa lost her
purse.
The next Day we had
breakfast and we went to
the award ceremony. It was
a bit boring. There were
photographers and report-
ers, and they thought that
Vanessa was Chenoa.
Later, we visited Madrid
with other students from
Garrucha and Murcia, and
finally we returned to
Almería.
In our opinion the trip was
fantastic and very fun. We
hope to win another prize
so we can travel to get it!

A few months ago I met with some friends and we started talking about ours jobs. I tried to explain to them that I was in-
volved in a bilingual project. I told them that during my classes I usually speak in English, moreover, I teach Maths in Eng-
lish. Suddenly, they burst out laughing.
The program sounds good, Spanish students attend Chemistry, Biology, and Maths in English. I know students usually find
it difficult to learn Maths, furthermore, they think Maths is like learning a new language (similar to Chinese). So it could be
more difficult if they have to study Maths in English.
But, I recommend teaching Maths in English. Not only will students be able to learn Maths in English, they will also im-
prove their speaking skills in another language.
Contrary to popular belief, students support teaching Maths in English too. Some of the students from 1st and 2nd of ESO
have written a few words about their experience learning Maths in English.
Paloma: I like Maths in English because we learn more English and learn about new cultures. It is easy because the teachers
are nice, also an American named Brittany helps us with our English and Maths. This year we are learning more English…
so does maths!!!.
Azahara: I like the bilingual class of mathematics because I learn to say math problems in English. We reinforce occasion-
ally the reading in English reading problems and we amuse ourselves doing games in English for groups
Joaquin: I like the Bilingual class because it is very entertaining and we learn many interesting words related to mathemat-
ics.
Alejandro: I like bilingual classes because when I learn Maths, I also learn new vocabulary, useful expressions and their
meanings. We do a lot of games and quizzes, it’s very funny! We have a bilingual assistant and she answers all of ours
questions. It’s very entertaining and you can get positives points too.
Mar: I think bilingual math class is very important for our life. We are learning a lot of English. We usually work with
computers. Also, we are learning many different new things.
Rafa: The Bilingual math class develop very good. There are very interesting and them help us a lot to learn English
Laura: The bilingual math class is fun and it’s very important in our life. Our English assistant came from America.
Lucia: The bilingual classes are very fun, because Brittany helps us learn English. In Maths we do lots of fun activities. I
like the bilingual maths classes.

Students from Primero de ESO
This year our science
lab is also bilingual!!!
Students love work-
ing in the lab because
it is different and
practical.
But, before undertak-
ing lab work they
have to know the ba-
sic rules.
First, they learn some
important safety rules
and vocabulary. This
is like a briefing be-
fore going into the
lab.
The students from 1st
and 2nd ESO have
been working on this
pre-lab in English.
Electroscopes detect electric
charge by the motion of a test
object due to the Coulomb
electrostatic force.
It consist of a vertical metal
rod from the end of which
hang two parallel strips of thin
flexible gold leaf.
By Noemí Díaz Guerrero
Fourth of ESO used an electro-
scope for an experiment during
a Physics and Chemistry class.
An electroscope is an early sci-
entific instrument that is used to
detect the presence and magni-
tude of electric charge in a
body. It was the first electrical
measuring instrument.
When the metal terminal is
touched with a charged object,
the gold leaves spread apart
into a ´V´.
This happens because some of
the charge on the object is con-
ducted through the terminal
and metal rod to the leaves.

4th of ESO’s Experiment with the Electroscope
Observation of e.. coli bacteria First, we put water on
a microscope slide;
afterwards, we took
the bacteria and put it
in the water.
Second, we used a
lighter to dry the wa-
ter and we dyed the
bacteria and then we
cleaned off the extra dye.
Third, we looked at the
slide on the optical mi-
croscope.
After that, we spread
E-Coli bacteria in a
sterile petri dish. The
next day we returned to
the lab and we could
see that the bacteria
had grown.
By Nerea Pérez
García.
In January we went to
the lab because we
wanted to observe E-
Coli bacteria that was
in a petri dish, so we
needed an optical mi-
croscope and a micro-
scope slide.

manently frozen in glaciers and at the polar
ice caps.
* About 1/2 of 1 % of the water on earth is
