DEAR FRIENDS OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL, Whether 2017 was a year of challenges for you on the most basic level or you have never in your life wanted for food, clothing, a warm bed or attentive doctor, for us the philosophical and practical focus is the same. To be served or to serve, to be waited on or to wait on—at St. Vincent de Paul we are dedicated to fostering a community in which we all look out for each other, in which we have faith in each other, as members of one family.

As you will see in the coming pages, we had an extraordinary year. We broke ground on a new facility at our main campus, which, in addition to housing our Ozanam Manor shelter, Ministries to the Homeless and a new family resource center, will also allow our medical and clinic to double its capacity to serve patients without insurance and greatly expand our Urban Farm. We kicked off a unique partnership with Arizona State University, which will allow for more students and faculty to serve and enhance their studies throughout our programs. In the fall, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of Turkey Tuesday and the most successful year ever of the Million Can Crusade—we may have to rename the drive the Two Million Can Crusade! We are so grateful for the generosity of our community.

So what are our plans for tomorrow? How will we achieve them? Now that is where we need your help, as our supporters, on three different levels.

First, with your money and time: There is no substitute for these basic building blocks. Our Society is greatly blessed to be a place where communities come together to help us help others.  

Second, with your influence: We ask each of you to be a St. Vincent de Paul ambassador to raise awareness of our mission and the scope of our services and accomplishments. Tell people who know our name what it stands for: FEED, CLOTHE, HOUSE, HEAL is a good start. Inform and enlighten where you can and we believe inspiration will shine through–to the benefit of those whom we are privileged to serve at St. Vincent de Paul.

Finally, with your prayers and the impact of your spirit: We ask that you keep St. Vincent de Paul and those we serve in your prayers. Give graciously at all times, even when it is not directly connected with St. Vincent de Paul. Generously accept gifts as well, bestowing dignity on the giver. This raises the tide of goodness and fellowship for all of us.  

Thank you for your continued belief in us. We consider this to be a sacred trust, one we strive to honor fully every day. May God abundantly bless you and those you love in the year ahead.

FEED.

HOUSE. HEAL.

CLOTHE.

A LOOK BACK AT 20171. We continued to open our downtown Phoenix dining room as temporary shelter for hundreds of men and women experiencing homelessness each night. The temporary shelter was opened in 2016 when another overflow shelter closed unexpectedly. We are grateful for the opportunity to step in and serve so many men and women during their time of need.

2. In 2018, Celebrity Fight Night Founder and Chairman Jimmy Walker will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Never Give Up, a weekly inspirational speaker series Jimmy hosts at St. Vincent de Paul’s downtown Phoenix dining room. Jimmy invites various community members, ranging from celebrities to local business leaders, to share words of encouragement and hope to dining room guests on Monday mornings.

3. The medical and dental clinic continues to grow and enhance patient care. Medical Clinic Director Dr. Maurice Lee is pictured with Internal Medicine Resident Dr. Shruti Mony, conducting a neurological exam on a patient. The medical clinic currently has 14 residency programs and five Arizona medical schools rotating through the clinic.

4. The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation donated a Bobcat, unofficially named Baxter, to support our urban farm operations. Baxter the mascot attended the groundbreaking ceremony!

5. Thanks to the continued support of Next Phase Enterprises, the Dream Center continues to thrive. Programs like tutoring, literacy and STEM activities allow children to catch up and excel in school. Next Phase Enterprises CEO Mike Parker and his family regularly volunteer and lead activities in the Dream Center.

6. In May, we celebrated the groundbreaking of our new building, which will house Ozanam Manor, ministries to the homeless and a new family resource center. We’ll also be expanding our medical and dental space, doubling the number of patients we are able to serve.

7. The Rob and Melani Walton Foundation funded a complete makeover of our urban farm, which produced 48,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables for our kitchen and food box program last year. The newly completed Rob and Melani Walton Urban Farm includes not only expanded space to grow food, but also public gathering spaces for educational programs and a water recycling system with underground tanks.

8. We celebrated 29 years of partnership with Palomino Primary School. Over 1,400 low-income children had the opportunity to experience the spirit of giving as they shopped for Christmas presents at $1 each in our Bell Road Thrift Store. Volunteer personal shoppers helped students pick the perfect gift for parents and siblings.

9. We were honored to be joined by Larry Fitzgerald and his family on Christmas. Without fanfare and with a special request to not invite TV cameras, Larry and his family have volunteered over the holidays year after year. Larry is pictured with SVdP Food Services Manager Danielle McMahon.
