THE SOIL IN GRASSLANDS
UNIT 3 – SCIENCE.EC
Moors make up approximately 6% of the territory in Ecuador. On the moors the climate is cold, foggy and rainy. It is an ecosystem that has a great number of plants and animals that are adapted to the conditions of the place. The ground on the structure that retains water and distributes it to other lower lands and helps to reduce the effects of global warming.
THE SOIL IN GRASSLANDS
FACTS
Since early civilizations started to live on the moors, the ground has provided them with water, carbon, oxygen and rich biodiversity. However, the idea that grasslands should be turned into productive land is gradually destroying these areas.
THE SOIL IN GRASSLANDS
PROBLEM
The changes in this area, caused by the irrational use of natural resources, the extensive crops, and the excessive cattle grazing, are provoking the loss of the ground structure. The low capacity of grasslands to retain water is leading to the erosion of the ground, turning them into a desert.
THE SOIL IN GRASSLANDS
SOLUTION
Nowadays, people are aware of the importance and benefits of the moors. This is why several conservation groups are joining efforts to combine ancestral practices with alternative knowledge to restore the natural characteristics of the land.

Endemic grass grows rapidly after cattle has eaten the pasture. The
grass is a source of food, fiber and fuel that regulates
the weather, pollination and water purification
