IntroductionThis unit focuses on the Earth and its surroundings. It is geared towards 3rd grade students as an introduction to the earth and its changing system, its development, characteristics, and how people interact with their environment. The content of this unit involves the solar system, planets, moons, asteroids, meteors, comets, day and night, lunar cycles and the seasons. This unit concentrates on KLAs: English, Science, Technology, and Creative Arts. The objective of this science lesson plan is to introduce the concepts of space, our solar system, galaxies and other celestial objects. Students will learn about the importance of space technology and space education. Students will use various space related activities to explore the basic concepts and to demonstrate their acquired knowledge. Students will use a variety of text and online resources to explore the subject matter presented throughout this unit lesson plan. In this unit students will be able to compare , contrast, evaluate , and analyze the solar system by using the brain-based research approach. All students will progress from concrete thinking to more abstract forms of thinking throughout the thematic unit. Students with special needs will be helped in each lesson with special accommodations to support successful academic achievement. Differential instruction will be used to tailor each lesson to meet each students academic needs.

ContextParticipants: 3rd grade Science class

Technology experience- Internet usage with accessing Hotlist, blogs, and retrieving assignments.Technological accessibility-The student will have a chance to access Hotlist in computer lab, and at homeThe computer lab consists of 20 computers which also is equip with standard software programs.Computers are available in the libraryThe teacher will schedule one day in each school calendar week for students to have access to required curriculum content. Teacher Support: The teacher is provided with help from computer lab specialist, and teacher’s assistant.Lesson structure – Both lessons (1 and 3, week 1 and 4) incorporate the use of technology. Lesson 1 takes 3 days to complete, and lesson 3 as well. After reviewing material in class students will access content on computer.

AIMStudents will learn that the sun, planets, and moons are part of the solar system as well as learn that the sun is the

main source of energy for everything on the earth. Also in this unit students will learn that gravity is the force that keeps planets in orbit around the sun and understand that most objects in the solar system are in regular and predictable motion. Those motions explain time concepts of days and years. Students will demonstrate their knowledge through the completion of projects ( a power point presentation demonstrating the name of each planet ,and a picture of planet with information attached. Information can be retrieved from text or via the internet. Students will also get the oppurtunity to create a spreadsheet template which explains how far each planet is from the sun.)The quiz grade will indicate at least 90% proficiency. Standards being addressed are:

Justification for Using Technology

Technology allows: Students to collaborate with each other and be more equipped and prepared for the world of work.Students to gain the most current, relevant, and meaningful information that can be applied to curriculum being thought in classTeachers to incorporate and connect different curriculumsTeachers to fulfill adaptation portion of lesson plans (by accomodating the learning styles and reaching diverse learners through many different ways, including students with special needs).Technology in this unit : Offers the student the opportunity to create a power point presentation using Microsoft Office demonstrating the name of each planet ,and a picture of planet with information displayed on each slide. This program allows students to gather information create animations and present information in an organized manner. With spread sheet assignment students will be given the oppurtunity to create a spreadsheet template which allows them to display data in a pie graph chart.

Introduction | Phases of the Moon | Our Planets and Stars | Our Solar System

IntroductionHello my space cadets! Welcome to my science page on the Solar System. Since we all learned about our wonderful Solar System in class, i thought it would be nice to complete fun activities and answer questions on our solar system. Please complete all activities and questions and be ready to talk more about our solar system in class.

The Internet Resources

Phases of the Moon Gravity Launch! - Launch Away! launch a rocket into space to see how the force of gravity can pull an object toward the earth and moon. Make sure to play with the launch thrust so you can land on the moon. Enjoy! Lunar Cycle 1 Challenge - Please write down your findings of the moon by looking at the pictures of the moons phases. Print out a calander and the names of the phases by clicking on 'Print' button and paste the correct phases onto your calendar. Have fun! and remember i am a full moon away if you need me. Lunar Cycle 2 Challenge - Please 'drag' the phases of the moon to its correct place in lunar cycles. Have fun! and dont forget to print your certificate of completion.

Our Planets and Stars Earth, Moon, and Sun - Click the play button and see how the earth, moon , and sun move around in the solar system, then take quiz. Good luck my smart space person! Star Search! - Play game and map out the constellations in the night sky. And remember you are always a star in my classroom! Take a Trip to Outer Space - Hey you are so great! Take a trip to outer space. Please pick a face, and when you get to the space museum make sure to click on pictures and objects to learn about them. Good Luck Space Cadet! Take a trip To Mars! Activity - Please take a trip to that great red planet called Mars. When you get there write a paragraph on what you find and bring to class on Tuesday.Have a spacetacular time!

Our Solar System A Little Asteroid Knowledge - Please read information about asteroids and answer 4 questions. 1.Asteroids are also known as _____ planets. 2.True or False. Asteroids are difficult to observe because of their small size. 3.What are the names of the two mostly known asteroids? 4.What are the names of the 4 larger asteroids? Our Planets - Please look at information on our Solar system and answer these five questions. 1.How many planets are in our solar system? 2.What are the first 4 inner planets in our solar system? 3.Which planet is the smallest planet? 4.True or False? Many scientists believe that our solar system is 4.6 billion years old Solar System Game - Click on the correct planet when you see the name pop up in box. Remember to write down your score when you finish.

Lesson 3After watching an animated video, listening to various podcasts, and participating in a class discussion on the solar system and movements of the Earth, Moon, and Sun, the student will be able to collect data via the internet and create a Microsoft Power Point Presentation about the movements of the three planets. In presentation student will include the terms rotate, revolve, third quarter, new moon, and orbit in each slide. Students will also be able to demonstrate how the earth causes night and day, by demonstration of the movement of the sun, and moon around the earth, and creation of moon models at the learning center. The book “The Moon Seems to Change” by Franklin M. Branley will be read in class. Students will complete with 90% proficiency.

Lesson Plans continuedAfter a discussion on The Solar System, the student will be able to

compare and contrast the size, composition, and surface features of the planets that comprise the solar system, as well as the objects

orbiting them. Students will have the opportunity to create a model of a planet and create a pie-chart using Microsoft Excel software and

see the great relative distances the planets are from the sun by measuring their own models and using a table of planetary sizes and

distances from the sun as a guide. In addition students will access information on all nine planets and complete “The Solar System”

quiz from internet Hotlist. Students will then write a one page reflection on one planet stating its characteristics, distance from the

sun, and other important facts. Reflection will be posted on classroom blog. Microsoft Excel project, reflection paper, posting of blog, and quiz will all be assessed according to the attached rubric,

and will be completed with 87% proficiency.
