T h e y n o t e d the enormous rents p a i d b y the t r a d e s m e n t h e y p a t r o n i z e d , the general ly h e a v y expense at w h i c h t h e y c o n d u c t e d the i r business, the l u x u r y o f the i r homes, a n d the p r i n c e l y fortunes some of t h e m amassed. T h e y r e a d t h e i r advert isements a n d k n e w t h a t these cost t h o u s a n d s of dol lars, a n d were g r e a t l y p e r p l e x e d to f i n d t h a t these advert isements t o l d h o w the goods were s o l d at about cost, w i t h occasional R e d L e t t e r a n d M a r k - d o w n sales at "1\4 off ,"" 1\3 off," etc. T h e y c o m m e n t e d . — H o w can these th ings be?

A t h o r o u g h i n v e s t i g a t i o n p r o v e d (salesmen let the cat out) t h a t m o s t of the special sales were " f a k e s " — t h a t the goods were first m a r k e d u p a n d t h e n m a r k e d d o w n ; o n the p r i n c i p l e e n u n -c ia ted b y " B a r n u m the G r e a t " t h a t " T h e P u b l i c l i k e to be h u m b u g g e d . " T h e y f o u n d t h a t m a n y large stores h a v e A d v e r t i s e m e n t W r i t e r s a t salaries of f r o m $1,000 to $5,000 per year, to m a k e the p u b l i c bel ieve t h a t at the i r store t h e y c a n " g e t goods for h a l f - n o t h i n g . "

F e e l i n g t h a t t h e y were get t ing at the m i l k of the cocoanut these " S o l o n s ? soon f o u n d means b y w h i c h t h e y ascerta ined the exact wholesale cost of goods i n general. T h e y were astonished to f ind that except o n staple goods a n d leaders, m e r c h a n t s ' profits over wholesale cost is f r o m 5 0 % to 3 0 0 % . T h e y f o u n d , for instance, t h a t a set of T a b l e C h i n a of 115 pieces, u s u a l l y s o l d for $15.00 to $19.00, c o u l d be purchased at wholesale for $7.50; a n d t h a t a 12-piece b e d - r o o m set of Queensware u s u a l l y sold at $10.00 c o u l d be b o u g h t at the f a c t o r y for $ 6 . 0 0 ; cheaper 12-piece decorated sets for $3.00,and d i t t o w i t h go ld tracings $3.50. T h e y f o u n d t h a t fine p ianos c a n be bought for $125.00; the exact matches , except i n n a m e , of i n s t r u m e n t s s o l d at $250 t o $400 reta i l ; F a m i l y B i b l e s at h a l f pr ice , other styles at 2 5 % to 4 0 % off.' S i l v e r w a r e , P a r l o r L a m p s , fancy goods general ly , a n d a l l k i n d s of J e w e l r y t h e y f o u n d at wholesale at enormous discounts. C l o t h i n g , F u r n i t u r e , R u g s , Druggets , etc., also y i e l d e d h a n d s o m e d i s c o u n t s ; i n L a c e Curta ins , for instance , 6 pairs of $2.00 c u r t a i n s , $12.00 at r e t a i l , t h e y secured for $7.50. T h e y even e x t e n d e d the m a t t e r to carriages, f a r m i n g i m p l e m e n t s , bu i lders a n d p l u m b e r s sup-plies, w i t h success a l l a long the l ine. N o w t h e y u n d e r s t o o d the secret of the g r a n d stores, t re-mendous rents, e legant homes a n d p r i n c e l y fortunes.

C H E C K M A T I N G T H E M I D D L E - M E N

The n e x t step of these " S o l o n s " was to see w h a t c o u l d be done to get bet ter values for t h e i r money. T h e y f o u n d others ( i m b u e d w i t h the same s p i r i t of self-help a n d self-protection) h a d f o r m e d a n associat ion ca l led the "Consumers' League," w h i c h s o l d a card for $1.00 e n t i t l i n g the h o l d e r to b u y at c e r t a i n stores at 1 0 % d i s c o u n t — t h e fee for the c a r d g o i n g to s u p p o r t the League 's so l ic i tor , p a y for p r i n t i n g the cards, etc. T h i s p l a n was a d o p t e d b y the " S o l o n s " a n d is s t i l l c o n t i n u e d : a n y m e m b e r c a n secure s u c h a " c a r d " for use i n his h o m e v i c i n i t y for smal ler art ic les ; a n d we advise t h a t each secure a n d use t h e m a n d save the i r cost m a n y t imes i n a year. B u t this d iscount d i d n o t satisfy these pioneer " S o l o n s ; " t h e y k e p t o n l o o k i n g a n d t h i n k i n g , a n d f ina l ly f o r m u l a t e d the p l a n of b u v i n g at wholesale t h r o u g h a m e r c h a n t of large a n d v a r i e d experience (who became one of t h e i r n u m b e r ) a n d to w h o m t h e y a l l o w e d ten per cent, to cover cost of his t ime, postage, etc. A s the " S o l o n " i d e a grew a n d the purchases were larger, the percentage for buyers ' expenses decreased, u n t i l n o w five per cent covers a l l .

A t first the m e r c h a n t s l a u g h e d : t h e y k n e w well t h a t the p u b l i c d o u b t e d the i r " B e l o w C o s t ' ' advert isements H o w e v e r these " S o l o n s ' ' h a d s o m e t h i n g good enough for themselves a n d the i r fr iends a n y w a y , a n d c o n c l u d e d t h a t t h e y w o u l d m a k e the n a m e " S o l o n S o c i e t y " a syno-n y m for absolute t r u t h , absolute honesty , a n d re ly o n the p u b l i c f i n d i n g i t out i n due t i m e .

T h e appearance is t h a t o u r " d a y of s m a l l t h i n g s " is p a s t — t h a t the people are t a k i n g to o u r p l a n l i k e w i l d fire o n a pra ir ie . T h e danger n o w is t h a t the larger r e t a i l m e r c h a n t s w i l l soon feel the p i n c h severely a n d endeavor to h i n d e r us b y b o y c o t t i n g m a n u f a c t u r e r s w h o sell goods to u s ; — h o p i n g thus to "freeze us o u t . " S o o n , however , we hope to be i n c o n d i t i o n to use such large q u a n t i t i e s t h a t we c a n c o n t r a c t for the entire o u t p u t of cer ta in m i l l s a n d fac-tories. I t is sure ly c o m i n g , for as " H o n e s t O l d A b e " s a i d , — " Y o u c a n fool some of the people a l l the t ime, a n d a l l of the people some of the t i m e ; b u t y o u c a n ' t fool a l l the people a l l the t i m e . "

THIS JOURNAL AND ITS MISSION.

T H I S journal is set for the defence of the only true foundation of the Christian's hope now being so generally re] through the precious blood of " the man Christ Jesus who gave himself a ransom [a corresponding price, a substitu 19; I T i m . 2:C.) Building upon this sure foundation the gold, silver and precious stones (I Cor. 3: 11—15; 2Pet. of God, its further mission is to—"Make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery which . . . has been hid in that now might be made known by the Church the manifold wisdom of God "—"which in other ages was not made know as it is now revealed."—Eph. 3 : 5-9,10.

It stands free from all parties, seels and creeds of men, while it seeks more and more to bring its every utterance i the wi l l of God iu Christ, as expressed in the Holy Scriptures. It is thus free to declare boldly whatsoever the Lord hath the divine wisdom granted unto us, to understand. Its attitude is not dogmatical, but confident; for we know whereof we implicit faith upon the sure promises of God. It is held as a trust, to be used only in his service; hence our decisions rel; what may not appear in its columns must be according to our judgment of his good pleasure, the teaching of his Word, for people in grace and knowledge. And we not only invite but urge our readers to prove all its utterances by the infallible 1 ence is constantly made, to facilitate such testing.

That the Church is " the Temple of the Living God"—peculiarly " His workmanship;" that its construction has been in ; Gospel age—ever since Christ became the world's Redeemer and the chief corner stone of this Temple, through God's blessings shall come "to all people," and they find access to him.—1 Cor. 3; 16, 17; Eph. 2:20-22; Gen. 2'

That meantime the chiseling, shaping and polishing, of consecrated believers in Christ's atonement for sin, progresses; and "living stones," "elect and precious," shall have been made ready, the great Master Work ma it will I 'ring all together ml and the Temple shall be filled with his glory, and be the meeting place between God and men throughout the Milk

That the Basis of Hope, for the Church and the World, lies in the fact that " Jesus Christ, by the grace of God, tasted death h som for all," and will be " the true light which lightethevery man that cometh into the world," "in due time."—1 lob.2:9;

That the Hope of the Church is that she may be like her Lord, "see him as he is," be "partaker of the divine nature," E his joint-heir.—I John 3 : 2 ; John 17:24; Rom. S:I7: 2 Pet. 1:4.

That the present mission of the Church is the perfecting of the saints for the future work of service; to develop in herself eve: witness to the world; and to prepare to be the kings arid priests of the next age.—Eph. .• : 11; Mat;. 2.': 12 ; Rev. 1

That the hope for the World lies in the blessings of knowledge and opportunity to be brought to all by Christ's Millennial Kiln of all that was lost in Adam, to all the willing and obedient, at the hands of their Redeemer and his glorified Clmrci; fully wicked will be destroyed.—Acts 3 : 19-23; Isa. 35.
