DENVER, CO— Bob Boll, the Guinness Book of World Records holder for most brick laid in one hour 25 years ago, swept the field away Saturday, September 21, 2013, in the 2013 SPEC MIX Bricklayer 500® Regional-Colorado Competition. His performance of laying 591 brick, all perfect, in one hour was just enough to capture 1st place and the Craftsmanship Award. "It was an incredible looking wall for almost 600 brick in one-hour. One of the best I've ever seen. Bob will be a factor in Vegas," said Tom Peterson of SPEC MIX after the results were announced. Boll and his tender, Luiz Arjon, of Boll Masonry, came away with $700 cash for 1st place and an extra $400 for winning the Top Craftsman award. With that first place finish, Bob also won a trip to Las Vegas for himself and his tender to compete in the 2014 SPEC MIX Bricklayer 500 National Competition at the World of Concrete/World of Masonry being held on January 22, 2014.

were treated to some exciting and quality bricklaying This win, however, did not come easy. Boll, the wily veteran, had some stiff competition, and a newcomer to the competition, riding his tail the entire time. Juan Cabral of Commercial Masonry Specialist, Inc. came in a very close 2nd place with 573 brick laid and no quality deductions. Cabral and his tender Ivan Flores pocketed $400 for the 2nd place finish and is sure to be a force next year at the Regional qualifier. Another Boll, Jason Boll who is Bob's son, captured 3rd place with a net brick count of 540. His cash award totaled $200 for the day. A plumb point and head joint were all that tripped up Jason, otherwise it would have been him headed to Vegas for a spot in the 2014 National.

The quality at this event in Colorado was indisputable. "The combination of the brick and consistent mortar together really clicked this time for me,"Boll said. "Last year at National, I had some difficulty

getting used to the harder brick." General Shale supplied over 7,000 modular brick and the SPEC MIX Masonry Cement and Sand Type N in bulk bags was used along with a SPEC MIX G7000 silo. Despite the recent devastation caused by flooding in Colorado, the Colorado masonry industry was aptly supported with a good crowd who were entertained with “World Class,” bricklaying, great food, games and prizes. Attendance was boosted by pre-event media outreach and regular patrons showed up to witness this extravaganza of bricklaying. Crowd members took home hundreds of dollars in cash prizes for winning games, such as a bean bag toss and raffles. The crowd was treated to an authentic taco cuisine supplied by local chefs.

O’Meara Ford brought in a loaded Ford F350 truck for display and Ford prizes were raffled off to the crowd. IQ Power Tools was also on hand to show off its cutting edge dustless IQ360TM masonry saw as well as its PC912 TM Dry Cut Power Cutter. Colorado Scaffolding displayed a line of Multiquip mixers and Hydro Mobile provided a P Series Mast Climber to show off.

In addition to representation by national sponsors, all 7,000 modular brick used in the competition were donated by General Shale in Denver, CO. The 8” lightweight Concrete Masonry Units were supplied by Colorado Best Block SPEC MIX Masonry Cement and Sand type N was mixed by one laborer using one G7000 silo system and a Multiquip Essick mixer for the entire competition. All cash, prizes, equipment and supplies were donated by:

Established to showcase the skill and craftsmanship of masonry, the general description of the bricklaying competition is as follows: The contest requires all masons to meet the quality standards of the event. They have 60 minutes to complete their 26 foot 8 inch, double wythe brick wall. The competition has four awards; 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place are based on the highest net brick count meeting the quality standards. The 4th award, and arguably considered the most coveted price, the SPEC MIX TOP CRAFTSMAN is judged the most sellable wall with over 500 brick laid. The walls are closely evaluated by carefully selected masonry officials carrying several years of bricklaying experience. Many of the competitors feel winning the SPEC MIX TOP CRAFTSMAN award is their main goal, and it has the second highest award purse.
