    E. M. Stuart, president of The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in 1953,with the original idea for creating a X. Stuart proposed the X as a meansto "maintain the glory of a community whose name means glamour andexcitement in the four corners of the world."Harry Sugarman, anotherChamber member and president of the Hollywood Improvement

Association, receives credit in an independent account. A committee wasformed to flesh out the idea, and an architectural firm was retained todevelop specific proposals. By 1955, the basic concept and generaldesign had been agreed upon, and plans were submitted to the LosAngeles City Council. In February 1956, a prototype was unveiledfeaturing caricature of an example honouree (John Wayne, by someaccounts) inside a blue star on a brown background. However, caricatures

proved too expensive and difficult to execute in brass with thetechnology available at the time; and the brown and blue motif wasnixed by C. E. Toberman, the legendary real estate developer known as"Mr. Hollywood", because the colours clashed with a new building he waserecting on Hollywood Boulevard.so the changed it to what we seetoday.

In 1990, X was named European Footballer of the Year and World Soccer Player ofthe Year after captaining West Germany to victory in the 1990 World Cup. Oneyear later, he was also named the first ever FIFA World Player of the Year.

He has played in five World Cups (1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998) more than anyother outfield player, and holds the record for the most World Cup matchesplayed (25 games). He also won Euro 80, and played in Euro 84, Euro 88, and Euro

2000. In 1999, he was again voted German Footballer of the Year despite being 38years old. He is the most capped German player of all time, retiring with a total of150 appearances (83 of them when the team was called West Germany) and 23goals for the German national team. X is a member of the FIFA 100 a list of 125of the greatest living football players chosen by Pel. Maradona said about X "heis the best rival I've ever had. I guess that's enough to define him" in his book Yosoy el Diego (I am Diego).

A versatile and complete player, X was renowned for his perceptive passing, positional sense, and well-timed tackling, as well as his explosive shot. During hiscareer, he usually played as a box-to-box midfielder, although later in his careerhe played as a sweeper.

His father was a well-to-do inventor, his mother a beautiful concertpianist; X was gifted in many arts (magic, piano, painting) as a child. When his mother died (he was seven) he travelled the world with hisfather. When his father died (he was fifteen) he became the ward ofChicago's Dr. Maurice Bernstein. In 1931 he graduated from the ToddSchool in Woodstock, Illinois; he turned down college offers for a

sketching tour of Ireland. He tried unsuccessfully to enter the Londonand Broadway stages, travelling some more in Morocco and Spain(where he fought in the bullring). Recommendations by ThorntonWilder and Alexander Woollcott got him into Katherine Cornell's roadcompany, with which he made his New York debut as Tybalt in 1934. Thesame year he married, directed his first short, and appeared on radio forthe first time. He began working with John Houseman and formed the

Mercury Theatre with him in 1937. Despite his reputation as an actor and master film-maker, he maintained

his memberships in the International Brotherhood of Magicians and theSociety of American Magicians (neither of which are unions, but fraternalorganizations), and regularly practiced sleight-of-hand magic in case hiscareer came to an abrupt end. X occasionally performed at the annual

conventions of each organization, and was considered by fellowmagicians to be extremely accomplished.

X is of Kabyle Berber descent. His parents, Smal and Malika, emigrated to Parisfrom the village of Aguemone in the Berber-speaking region of Kabylia ineastern Algeria, in 1953 before the start of the Algerian War. The family, whichhad settled in the city's tough northern districts of Barbs and Saint-Denis, foundlittle work in the region. So in the mid-1960s, they moved to thenorthern Marseille suburb of La Castellane where, on 23 June 1972, X was born as

the youngest of five siblings. X's father Smal worked as a warehouseman at adepartment store, often on the night shift, while his mother was a housewife. The family lived in so small a tower-block apartment in the housing complex thathe, his parents, three brothers and one sister had to sit down to eat in shifts. Yet,due to his father's steady job, the family lived a reasonably comfortable life bythe standards of the neighbourhood, which was notorious throughout Marseillefor its high crime and unemployment rates.

It was at La Castellane that X had his earliest introduction to football, joining in atthe age of five, in football games that the neighbourhood's children played onthe Place Tartane, an 80-by-12-yard plaza that served as the main square of thehousing complex. In July 2011, X named Bla Slikovi, Enzo Francescoli and Jean-Pierre Papin as his idols while growing up.

X attempted to break into the film industry, initially without success, but finallylanded the chance to direct a film based on the real-life Christine Jorgensen sex-change story, then a hot topic. The result, Glen or Glenda (1953), gave afascinating insight into X's own personality and shed light on his transvestism (analmost unthinkable subject for an early 1950s feature). Although devoutlyheterosexual, X was an enthusiastic cross-dresser, with a particular fondness forangora. On the debit side, though, the film revealed an almost complete lack of

talent that would mar all his subsequent films, his tendency to resort to stockfootage of lightning during dramatic moments, laughable set design, and a near-incomprehensible performance by Bela Lugosi as a mad doctor whose presence isnever adequately explained. The film deservedly flopped miserably but X, alwaysupbeat, pressed ahead.

At the time of his death, the industry newspaper, Variety, failed to run hisobituary.

A surviving non-fiction manuscript, supposedly written by X, about working inHollywood was published as "Hollywood Rat Race" in December 1998. His first wife, Norma McCarty, kicked him out of their house on their wedding

night when she discovered he was wearing women's underwear. The marriagewas never consummated, serving as grounds for an annulment less than sixmonths later.

X has twice recorded with British band Oasis. Most notably, heplays lead slide guitar on the track "Fade In-Out", from the 1997album Be Here Now. Noel Gallagher, Oasis's lead guitarist, wasallegedly too drunk to perform it himself, so celebrity pal Xstepped in and nailed the lead on one take.

Arrested for trashing a New York hotel room. X claimed that anarmadillo was responsible, saying that he had found the animalhidden in a closet and it had gone crazy, wrecking the hotel roombefore leaping out the window.

He had "Winona forever" tattooed on his arm. After he broke up,he had the n and a surgically removed to simply say "Wino

New York Times reported on 12/25/2000 that X was born on 23January 1899, but Warner Brothers publicity decided that aChristmas birthday would be far more advantageous because 'aguy born on Christmas can't be all bad.'" However, copies of two1900 census forms prove this to be incorrect. There is some

dispute as to how X's lip injury occurred. One story is that when Xwas in the Navy, a prisoner he was escorting attempted to escapeand hit X in the face with his shackles. X, fearing that he would losehis position and be severely punished for letting a prisoner escape, chased down the man and brought him successfully to thePortsmouth Naval Prison. However, because the surgeon who

stitched up his face did not do a very good job, X was left with histrademark lisp. Another version has it that he caught a large woodsplinter in his lip at the age of 12, but the combat story is moreexciting - a legend
